Astrid's Cable Rib Raglan Pullover

Cable Rib Raglan Pullover
By Astrid Schmidt-Nielsen, March 2008
Sizes:
Sizes: S (35), M (38), L (41).
For additional sizes, determine the desired chest measurement and add 2-4 inches. Multiply this by 5 to get the number of stitches to cast on for the body. Thus for a size 36/38: 36 plus 4 = 40, times 5 = 200. For the pattern repeats to come out right, changes in stitch count should be in multiples of 8. The cable rib is stretchy, and will accommodate several sizes. The sweater is intended to have a fitted look.

Suggested Materials
Yarn: Karabella Aurora 8: 13 (14, 15) skeins
Needles: Size 5 and 7 32” circular needles. Size 5 and 7 16” circular needles. Size 5 and 7 dp needles.

Gauge
19-20 sts. = 10 cm. (4 in.) in stockinette stitch with size 7 needles (or size to obtain gauge). If different from recommended size, smaller needles should be 2 sizes smaller than larger needles.
Notes and Abbreviations
Right twist: knit though two k sts as if to k2 tog, but leave the stitches on left needle, insert right needle between the 2 sts just worked and knit the first st. again, slip both sts from left needle.
Body
Using size 5 needles, cast on 184 (200, 216) sts. Join ends to work in the round, making sure not to twist the work. Place marker at beginning of row and work the set-up row. After half the stitches have been completed, place second marker.
Set-up row: p1, *k2, p2 around, end with p1. Pattern rows
Row 1: p1, *right twist, p2 around, end with p1.
Rows 2-4: p1, *k2, p2 around, end with p1.
Repeat rows 1-4 two more times, then change to size 7 needles and continue in pattern until body measures 16 in. or desired length from bottom to underarm, ending with a cable twist row. Place the first 10 (10, 12) sts after each marker on stitch holders.

Sleeves (make 2)
With size 5 dp needles, cast on 40 (40, 44) sts. Work set-up row and 4 pattern repeats. Change to size 7 dp needles, and at the same time inc. 1 st at beg and end of cable twist row. Continue in pattern, increasing 1 st. at beg and end of every cable twist row. Integrate the new sts into the cable twist pattern as follows: the first pair of new sts will be purl sts, the 2nd pair of new sts will be knit sts, the 3rd pair of new sts will be knit sts, the 4th pair of new sts will be purl sts – you now have two new pattern repeats. When there are about 60 sts on the needles, change to 16” circular needle, place marker at beginning of row, and continue increasing 2 sts every cable twist row until there are 72 (80, 88) sleeve sts. Continue working in pattern until sleeve measures 16 (17, 18) in. or desired length from wrist to underarm, ending with a cable twist row. Place the last 5 (5, 6) and first 5 (5, 6) sts on a stitch holder.
Raglan yoke
Join one sleeve to each side of body as follows: Starting across front half of body sts, knit the first stitch, work in pattern to the last front stitch, k last st, place marker, join first sleeve, k first sleeve st, work in pattern to last sleeve st, k last st, place marker, k first st of back half of body, work in pattern to last st, k last st, place marker, join other sleeve, k first sleeve st, continue in pattern to last st, k last st, place marker – end of row (this is pattern row 2). Beginning with row 3 below, work raglan shaping as follows:
Continue cable twist pattern, with twist on Row 1. Rows 1 and 3: k1, k 2 tog, work in pattern to last 3 sts before next marker, ssk, k1, slip marker, k1 k2 tog, work in pattern to last 3 sts before next marker, ssk, k1, slip marker, k1 k2 tog, work in pattern to last 3 sts before next marker, ssk, k1, slip marker, k1 k2 tog, work in pattern to last 3 sts before next marker, ssk, k1, slip marker, end of row.
Rows 2 and 4: k the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Measuring from the join, work until the diagonal between the sleeve and body measures approx. 6 ½, (7, 7 ½) in. [ about 18 (19, 20) decrease rows]
Neck shaping
Begin short rows. At the end of the row, you are at the marker between the left sleeve and the front. Call this marker #1. The marker between the right sleeve and the front is marker #4.
At the same time as you are working the short rows described below, continue the raglan decreases at the sleeves and back, between markers 4 and 1, on every right side row. The front decreases will be done as part of the short rows and will move progressively away from the marker.
Starting at marker #1, k1, k2 tog, k1, turn work, slip the first st, purl to marker #1, continue in pattern to marker #4, p1, p2 tog, p1. Turn work. *Slip first st, knit to marker #4, work in pattern to marker #1 (remembering raglan decreases), knit to the st slipped on the previous row, k2 tog. (You are knitting together the 2 sts on either side of the gap between the slipped stitch and the remaining front sts.) , k1, turn work. Slip first st, purl to marker #1, work in pattern to marker #4, purl to gap, p2 tog across gap, p1, turn. Repeat these 2 rows for neck shaping. At some point, there will be too few stitches to work comfortably on the 32” needle and you will need to change to the shorter 16” circular needle. Continue short rows until 104 (104, 120) sts remain. Change to 16” size 5 circular needle, removing all markers, except #1. Re-establish k2, p2 cable rib pattern around entire neck opening and continue in pattern for 2 complete pattern repeats, ending with a cable twist row. Bind off loosely.
Finishing
Move the held underarm stitches to two dp needles and bind off underarm stitches using 3-needle bindoff. Sew together any remaining holes at underarms and weave in all loose ends.
Thank you Astrid for this beautiful pattern, your hard work at the store and your friendship!
