Reflective Blog #2
On Friday, October 13th our group made the trip out to 916 Ink, and we explored the imaginarium along with interviewing some of the staff members. My initial reaction of the imaginaruim was simply WOW! It was such a beautiful space that was carefully crafted with so many details. I absolutely loved all of the details such as little boxes filled with starfish and other knick-nacks, typewriters, and a huge amount of books. Creativity definitely fills the room, and I can see how students might be influenced to think and write creatively in such an amazing space. The vision behind 916 Ink and their desire to help youth through literacy is amazing, and I truly want more youth to get involved!
Our group is currently working on helping 916 Ink get more youth involved in the workshops. While interviewing Henry, he explained how participation at workshops has been lacking. For the new media plan, our group is proposing a revamp in the social media area; we think 916 Ink can be more active on their social media accounts to try and spread word of their workshops, and to inform others of their organization as well. Prior to this class, our group was unaware of who 916 Ink was, and for that reason we believe they need to reach out and make their presence known!
Another idea to capture the attention of a new audience is to have a local news station feature a little segment on 916 Ink. A tour of the imaginarium would be ideal, along with featuring a workshop, and some interviews with kids at the workshop to help encourage parents, and any youth who may be watching. Another thing to consider is the audience of the news channels in our local Sacramento area. Different news channels have a different audience, for example, I enjoy watching Good Day Sacramento, while my parents only watch Fox40. Being featured on more than one news channel will really help reach a variety of audiences! I also think talking to more local schools, and offering schools to have field trips in the imgainarium would be helpful. That way kids can get a little sample of what goes on at 916 Ink. Henry also mentioned that transportation may also be a major issue as to why youth are not participating in the workshops. Our group might also look into some possible solutions for transportation, but it may be a little difficult since there are so many contributing factors and obstacles in that category.
Our group still needs to do a lot more research so we can refine our proposal. We want our proposal to be realistic, so we defiantly have to read more about successful organizations and how they obtained success. We also need to do more research about our news channel idea, and how to make that happen. Along with gaining ideas on how to get more activity going on the social media accounts of 916 Ink. I might also need to email Henry and ask him a few questions that have since popped into my mind after our interview.
I am excited about helping 916 Ink because I see their passion, and the value they bring to youth and communities. I really hope our proposal will help them gain new ideas! However, time management is definitely a big issue. As a full time student with a part time job, it has been difficult managing time for this project.
