Harry Reid invokes the Nuclear Option

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has taken off his earrings, folks. After the multiple filibuster foolishness from the GOP, Harry went "Nuclear"! He moved for Senate to vote on passing most executive and judicial nominees by a simple majority vote.

And they did, 52 to 48. So now, they need 51 votes. You know the GOP is pissed, but that's what they get for abusing the system. Funny, they always talk about the poor abusing system... Anywho, the rules are in place.

Today, Harry Reid announced that the Senate would take up a vote on ENDA before Thanksgiving.

He said this:

"We haven't taken this up for a number of years. We tried, it failed in the House before, but we're going to take it up again."

This vote has been in midst of controversy for years. Hopefully, this will actually happen and we can move... Oh, wait, it has to go through the House. Great Hera!

Lieberman & Reid will bring a Standalone repeal of DADT

After the foolishness of today, Joe Lieberman is taking the DADT repeal out of NDAA and making it a standalone deal.

The Hill reports:

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said Thursday he'll introduce a free-standing bill to repeal the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Lieberman said that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) agreed to bring legislation to the floor to do away with the military's prohibition on openly gay and lesbian service members.

The Connecticut independent said that he would introduce the legislation as soon as today with language that mirrors an amendment to the defense authorization bill.

Senators failed to begin debate on that defense bill in a vote this afternoon, with even some Republicans who favor repealing "Don't ask, don't tell" voting to sustain a filibuster.

Hopefully, this is some good news coming. Obama has been talking to the senators about getting this NDAA/DADT bill done soon. Harry feels that tonight is the night.

One advocate, however, already this morning is throwing out a warning to Reid. Servicemembers United's Alex Nicholson said Reid must be reasonable with the NDAA amendment process or "he will be intentionally throwing the vote."

Robert Raben, a former Clinton Justice Department official who now runs a lobbying firm, was incredulous. He told Metro Weekly, "In what fictional universe is moving forward as those of us who want to lift the ban have insisted upon to be greeted with anything but 'at last, thank you'?"

Because the vote to proceed to debating the NDAA failed in September, Reid voted against it for procedural purposes so that he later could bring the bill back as a motion to reconsider. He said this morning that he is on the path to doing so tonight.

Okay, I'm wishing for the best. Tonight could be tonight.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to schedule a vote to end the Pentagon's ban on gays serving openly in the military before the start of the new Congress in January.


"During the work period following the Thanksgiving holidays, I will bring the Defense Authorization bill to the floor, including a repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,'" Reid, a Democrat, said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Our Defense Department supports repealing 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' as a way to build our all-volunteer armed forces. We need to repeal this discriminatory policy so that any American who wants to defend our country can do so," Reid said.

I hope they have better luck this time.

The man behind a TV ad urging Latinos not to vote in the hotly contested Nevada Senate race says he doesn’t know what he’ll do now that Univision, the Spanish-language network, said it would not run the spot. “Right now we’re reanalyzing the whole strategy,” said Robert de Posoda, president of Latinos for Reform.

The ad was widely seen as an effort to hurt the campaign of incumbent Sen. Harry Reid, a Democrat, who is working hard to turn out Latino voters. Mr. de Posoda, who has long worked with the Republican Party, said he didn’t like either candidate but acknowledged that a Latino boycott would hurt Mr. Reid’s chances.
Democrats from President Barack Obama on down condemned his effort. “I think it is terrible,’” Mr. Obama said Tuesday during a roundtable with reporters from Spanish-language outlets. “It is a cynical political ploy to try to drive Latino votes to benefit a Republican candidate in Nevada who would never vote for immigration reform.”

Mr. de Posoda argues that politicians take Latino votes for granted and have failed to deliver on promises including enacting comprehensive immigration legislation. To teach them a lesson, his ads argue, Latinos should stay home on Election Day. After complaints from Nevada Democrats and some Republicans, Univision said it would not run the spots, called “Don’t Vote.”
“Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting,” a Univision spokesperson said. “Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote.”

From Harry Reid's Campaign: Reid does not take cues from Gaga.

In the magical, unicorn infected world we live in, many believe that Lady Gaga is the new Mary Magdalene (especially the gays).

Earlier this week, she brought discharged soldiers to MTV's VMAs as a statement against DADT. It was a great gesture to bring awareness of the issue. Gaga also urged folks to contact Harry Reid and push him to repeal DADT.

Then a day or 2 later, Reid announced that they will vote on DADT next week. Suddenly, LGBT blogs and WeHo gay munchkins claimed that it was Gaga who made this happened. Now, when I heard this... I laughed. I mean Gaga is good, but not 'Angelina Jolie' good. But many were convinced.

But today, we have some clarification:

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday a vote to repeal the military’s ban of openly gay and lesbian soldiers had been planned for next week before the singer made waves with a plea during a daytime talk show.

The pop star known for flashy performances and eccentric style called on Reid to repeal the military’s "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres that aired Monday.

Reid’s campaign and Gaga traded talking points on Twitter after the lawmaker announced the vote. Reid told Gaga repealing the measure was the right thing to do.

Campaign spokesman Kelly Steele said Reid does not take cues from Gaga.

Maybe if she made a song for his campaign, he might consider it.

The Washington Blade has learned that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) intends to schedule a vote next week on major defense budget legislation that contains “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal language, regardless of any objection from members of the U.S. Senate.

A senior Democratic leadership aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Reid met with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday to inform the Republican leader that the fiscal year 2011 defense authorization bill will come to the Senate floor the week of Sept. 20.

The aide said Senate leadership is anticipating the Senate won’t have unanimous consent to bring the legislation to the floor, so 60 votes will be necessary to end a filibuster and move forward with debate on the bill.

“We are going to take it the floor next week to see where the votes are,” the aide said.

Dear Harry:

My West Point ring has always symbolized an irrevocable promise: my commitment to serving America and my duty to defend freedom and justice. Today, with my discharge from the army for telling the truth, the ring takes on a new meaning, serving as a symbol for the enduring pain of broken promises.

America was founded on the principles of inalienable rights, equality, and the promise of justice for all. But today, Americans remain segregated from that promise. Fired from our jobs, discriminated in the military, denied equal access to our own integrity and acknowledgement of our families, we cannot conclude that our country has manifested its own promise, over 230 years later.

You have also made personal promises to me that the senate would repeal military discrimination before the end of 2009. Indeed, you sent a letter to President Obama and Secretary Gates, claiming that was the most you could do to save my career. You promised to lead on repeal of discrimination. I believed your promise because you are the most powerful senator in America. Truly, no one can do more. The false hope of your promise has been made real to me today with another letter: the letter terminating my military service.

But I present this ring to you, symbolizing my promise as a fellow citizen: my service continues.

I promise I will hold you accountable to your obligations to lead in the effort to end discrimination, both in the workplace and in the military. My promise is not merely written on a piece of paper or words alone, but in the hearts of every lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender American fired from their jobs because of broken promises from those who purport to be our friends. History will judge us and conclude that the greatest obstacles to justice were not the loud rants of bigots, but the quiet fears of those unwilling to stand firm in the fulfillment of their commitments. I refuse to allow my friends register themselves in history as obstacles to justice.

I commit to you my renewed pledge and continued service. To you and all those "friends" who manipulate, deceive and exploit our community, I will serve as a reminder of the consequences we all pay when allegiance to political careers takes higher priority than allegiance to America's promise.

Harry Reid's Family Tragedy

Oh man...

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's wife and daughter were in a serious car accident Thursday afternoon on Interstate 95 in Fairfax County, and police said they were treated at an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the Reids' van was rear-ended and crushed by a fully loaded tractor-trailer while driving in heavy traffic.

"Mrs. Reid has a broken nose, broken back and broken neck. Lana has a neck injury and facial lacerations. Both Mrs. Reid and Lana are conscious, can feel their extremities, and according to doctors their injuries are non-life threatening," Jon Summers, a spokesman for Sen. Reid (D-Nev.), said in a statement late Thursday afternoon.

"Senator Reid has been to the hospital and appreciates the support he and his family are receiving from Nevadans and his colleagues in the Senate," Summers said.

My heart goes out to him and his family.

I was a proud and enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama during the campaign and have worked as hard as I can to advance President Obama’s legislative agenda.

Moreover, throughout my career, from efforts to integrate the Las Vegas strip and the gaming industry to opposing radical judges and promoting diversity in the Senate, I have worked hard to advance issues important to African American community.

This is his apology after a 2008 statement came to light. He said that Obama could be the country’s first black president because he was “light-skinned” and had “no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”
