This is Me. 1:46 AM
Friend like jewel
Saturday, October 2, 2010
I always thought you were the best
I guess I always will.
I always felt that we were blessed,
And I feel that way, still.

Sometimes we took the hard road,
But we always saw it through.
If I had only one friend left,
I'd want it to be you.

Sometimes the world was on our side;
Sometimes it wasn't fair.
Sometimes it gave a helping hand;
Sometimes we didn't care.

'Cause when we were together,
It made the dream come true.
If I had only one friend left,
I'd want it to be you.

Someone who understands me,
And knows me inside out.
And helps keep me together,
And believes without a doubt,

That I could move a mountain:
Someone to tell it to.
If I had only one friend left,
I'd want it to be you.

'Cause when we were together,
It made the dream come true.
If I had only one friend left,
I'd want it to be you.

Someone who understands me,
And knows me inside out.
And helps keep me together,
And believes without a doubt,

That I could move a mountain:
Someone to tell it to.
If I had only one friend left,
I'd want it to be you.

..Who would you dedicate this song to?

Who do you say you are?

We are constantly subjected to comparison,
or I feel that I am constantly subjected to comparison.

In terms of what?
Academics.

No, we may never understand why we work so hard for our grades,
and perhaps we only will when we see the fruits of our labour in the future.
However then, we may never apply the lessons we learnt,
or the subjects that are taught.
..Perhaps, we're all just learning how to learn and adapt,
life skills.

I have cousins who are really smart.
Some from the prestigious colleges in Singapore,
some who have received scholarships to go overseas.
Sure, I'd like to score excellent grades,
receive an excellent scholarship,
and an excellent life at the very end.
The question that comes into play is not whether I have the ability to do so,
but whether I have the capacity and condition to do so.

When a lecturer came to my school,
and told the school that JC students,
actually represented the top 28% of students in Singapore.
My initial instinct was,
"wow, I never knew that."
but then, thoughts followed,
"hmm, somehow I don't feel so special."
I guess that statistic doesn't assure anything,
it doesn't assure a job
it doesn't assure a good life,
it doesn't assure a good future.
That's the conclusion.
Nonetheless,
we must not deny a kid from achieving some consolation,
how sad it would be,
if a child were to participate in a competition,
win nothing,
and yet receive no support from his parents or peers.

When I look at my cousins,
I admire them and sometimes I really wish I were them.
When my parents talk about them,
and when I see how successful they are,
I begin to wonder,
were they brought up with the very same pressure?
Were they brought up in the same environment?
Did they have more opportunities than me?
Did they get a head start to what they wanted to do?
Did money ever become an issue?
Am I giving myself too many excuses to why I can not succeed like them?

..The answers to the questions I do not know.
Success is determined by every individual who set their own goals,
and while I don't have an ego or low self-esteem,
I think I'm quite successful with failures.
Irony and self-interpretation intended.

Well now.
While flames of wanting to become a musician have slowly faded,
while I forget the lyrics and melodies to the songs I composed,
and while my countless failed attempts at poor recording have been wiped from my hard drive,
I am left with the books.

Can we be ourselves,
like we were yesterday?

Before you ask which way to go,
remember where you've been.

Half the time I've been away,
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
Today a boy was studying on the bus,
while traveling home.
It was a long journey for him,
and sitting there,
he was caught between the music playing in his mind,
and the stack of notes he had on his lap.

He looked up.
And there he noticed,
people.

There were people dressed in shirt and pants,
holding on to their briefcase,
as though their life were packed in it.

There were two army boys in uniform,
nodding their heads away,
tired from all that they've faced during the day.

There were ladies carrying bags,
bags of groceries weighing their hands down,
heavy like the load that life has laid on them.

..And there was the boy.
with the stack of notes on his lap,
trying to focus,
and wondering again, the reason he's studying.

It's interesting how so many different can be on the bus,
traveling the same journey,
and yet all of them may take different directions in life,
making different decisions for different purposes and reasons.

Nobody knows what the future holds,
but I guess we know who holds the future.
It's important,
to know why we do the things we do,
and the purpose behind it.
And I guess today I've been reminded,
the reason I'm studying for.
