A 5x7 canvas is the basis for this whimsical view of Candy's favorite old wives' tale. The colorful background was achieved by blending Claudine Hellmuth's Classic Teal and A Dab Of Yellow Studio Paints. A haunting man's image, from a black and white picture, was transferred onto the canvas using Matte Multi Medium. Add a vintage eye chart from Tim Holtz' Oddities Stamp Set, a vintage picture of a cross eyed boy, a dusting of some Perfect Pearls, and two optical lenses and you've got "Don't Cross Your Eyes...They Will Stick Like That!"
*Find a penny, pick it up and all day long you'll have good luck* came to Nancy on a walk with her dog when she spotted a penny. After returning home from the walk, she gathered things that were symbols of luck i.e., 7 Gypsies Bingo paper, Tim Holtz Bingo stamp and miscellaneous ephemera on top of Graphic 45 background paper. The lucky penny finished off the card front.
Lori had to think pretty hard on this theme, but, she came up with....breaking a mirror gives you seven years bad luck. She used paper from Lost and Found, tissue tape, salvage stickers, and a grungeboard number 7 to finish this tale!
Nancy never thought of "Star light, star bright" as an old wives' tale, but, it showed up in the lists she found online - so, she made an oversized birthday tag for a friend. Wendy Vecchi's Celestial Art stamp provided the stars hanging over Tim Holtz's Rickety House & Iron Gate Sizzix dies.
"A bird in the Hand......." is what came to mind Lynne's mind when she saw this challenge. She created her "mini sketchbook" beginning with 7gypsies ~ Book Cover. She bound her book together with her handy dandy Bind it All! She smeared Tarnished Brass Distress Crackle paint around the edges. Then she covered a piece of cardboard with Tissue Tape and die cut it using the Caged Bird Die. And the AMAZING tree is a stamp from Winter Sketchbook. Head on over to her blog for more details.
While growing up, Linda's family always followed the "rule" that they had to wait one hour after eating before they could go in swimming and she got a chuckle out of finding it on a list of old wives' tales. Her tag is made using the Cracked Embossing folder, Antique Linen and Vintage Photo distress inks, a Memo Pin, the Tattered Florals die, a piece of Foliage hardware and a stamp from the Odds and Ends set.
Sarah remembers asking her mum on which day she was born and that's how she learnt 'Monday's Child'. Seven hanging tags tell the story....turns out Sarah is a Friday lass. She used many versatile products including Distress Inks, a Snow Cap Dabber, Tim Holtz Stamps, Glassine Paper and Multi-Medium. More details and photos on Sarah's blog.
"When your eyes are toooo close, you'll be wearing glasses in due time" is the old wives' tale that Terry has used. The "Eye" stamp is from The Tim Holtz, Oddities. The eyes are worked on with Crackle Accents. The background is also from the Oddities stamp set, it was coloured with Distress inks, Vintage Photo, Aged Mahogany, Peeled Paint and Walnut Stain as well as embossed with the copper embossing powder. The flowers were made from The Tim Holtz Tattered Florals Die and the papers are from Basic Grey, Curio. More detailed pictures are on her blog
For his old wives' tale, Dan chose "Beware the one whose eyebrows meet, for in their heart you'll find deceit". Whatever the correct word is for a triptych with 4 parts, this is one of those! Products used include Claudine Hellmuth Gesso, Matt Multi Medium, Forest Moss Distress Stain and White, Espresso and Red Pepper paint dabbers. It's hard to see clearly the detail here, so hop over to Dan's blog for larger images and details of the techniques he used.
Kim had trouble choosing just one Old Wives' Tale but decided to use salt as her theme... The Background has been treated with salt sprinkled onto distress stains to create a texture similar to watercolour effect. The bird image stamped in coffee archival, the bird's has a little salt glued to give a subtle shimmer. For the bird cage Kim tried some salt embossing and applied distress inks to enhance. The tattered flower was cut from distress Coredinations cardstock, with a sculpture flower centre.I decided on "a stitch in time saves nine". To make my sample I used Wendy Vecchi's Art Parts; Tim Holtz's Weathered Clock die, a Butterfly Mover and Shaper, an Idea-Ology numeral covered with dictionary paper and Curtain Call stamps from Graphic 45.

I see that some of the examples for the theme are Proverbs and not old wives tales so is it OK to use a proverb? (she asks desperately hoping its a yes as I cant think of a decent old wives tale to do lol ) probably a sign of lack of imagination on my part :D
ReplyDeleteThese are so beautiful but my fav is "A stitch in time saves nine." I love those vintage looking spools of thread!
