Le sorelle Soffici - Pierpaolo Vettori (available only in italian): a fantastical story about two sisters, their house and family. Very imaginative and a bit bizarre.

Irish Journal - Heinrich Böll: "A unique entry in the Böll library, Irish Journal records an eccentric tour of Ireland in the 1950's. An epilogue written fourteen years later reflects on the enormous changes to the country and the people that Böll loved. Irish Journal is a time capsule of a land and a way of life that has disappeared".

Poetic. A recommended reading especially if you like Ireland or if you are planning a journey there.

Le sorelle Soffici - Pierpaolo Vettori: "L’Italia trafficona e corrotta di Tangentopoli raccontata da Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie, ovvero può sopravvivere l’innocenza in un mondo come questo? ". 

Una storia fantastica su due sorelle, la loro casa e la loro famiglia. Molto fantasioso e un po' bizzarro.

Diario d'Irlanda - Heinrich Böll: poetico. Una lettura consigliata, soprattutto se amate questo paese o se state progettando un viaggio laggiù.

Kitchen Chinese: chick-lit set in Bejing. Quite interesting due to the details about Chinese and American-Chinese culture and food. 

Norwegian Wood: not so good as I thought (many people had told me this book's great and my expectations were probably too high).

The uncommon reader: really short and pretty funny.

Kitchen Chinese: romanzo tipo Kinsella ambientato a Pechino. Interessanti particolari sulla cultura e sul cibo cinesi e cino-americani.

Norwegian Wood: non così bello come pensavo (diverse persone me ne avevano parlato come di un gran libro e le mie aspettative erano probabilmente troppo alte).

La sovrana lettrice: molto breve e spiritoso.

1) Quale libro stai leggendo attualmente?
"La stanza più buia" di Johan Theorin. Ormai da qualche anno leggo sempre un horror a Natale, è diventata una tradizione.

2) Perchè l’hai scelto?
Vedi sopra. Inoltre mi ricorda molto Lindqvist nello stile (anche se l'ultimo di Lindqvist non mi ha entusiasmato come i primi due - "Lasciami entrare" in particolare è un capolavoro).

3) Ti piace farti consigliare libri dagli amici?
Mi piace moltissimo sentire parlare di libri, ma raramente poi leggo quello che mi viene consigliato.

4) Lo scaffale che visiti per primo in libreria?
Il primo che trovo :-)

5) Il tuo libro preferito?
Tanti.. "Il bar sotto il mare" di Benni. "Cime Tempestose" di Emily Bronte. "Il Maestro e Margherita" di Bulgakov. "La foresta incantata" di Mary Stewart.

6) Quello più brutto?
"Il giorno in cui mia figlia impazzì" di Michael Greenberg. Scritto in un modo borioso e presuntuoso come pochi.

7) L’ultimo libro che hai letto?
"Il linguaggio segreto dei fiori" di Vanessa Diffenbaugh. 

8) Quello che aspetta sullo scaffale da anni?
L'"Ulisse" di Joyce. La mia balena bianca.

Non ricordo. Non è molto che ho realizzato che era un mio diritto di lettore non finire un libro. Fino a poco tempo fa mi sforzavo disperatamente di arrivare alla fine anche se non mi piacevano. Adesso non mi faccio più tanti scrupoli.

12) Quello che hai lasciato a metà a malincuore?
"L'ombra del vento" di Carlos Ruiz Zafòn. Non mi ha preso, purtroppo. Magari in futuro.

13) Quello con il miglior finale?
"Il bar sotto il mare" di Benni :-)

"La mia famiglia e altri animali" di Gerald Durrell

15) Quello più triste?
L'ultimo che mi ha fatto piangere è stato "Dewey" ("Io e Dewey" in italiano) di Vicky Myron. Me l'ha regalato il mio ex inglese e ho finito di leggerlo in aereo. Inutile descrivere il disagio e la perplessità del mio vicino di posto quando ho iniziato a piangere come una fontana.

16) Quello più originale?
"Crimini e misteri per la stanza da bagno" di M. Diane Vogt (e simili).

17) Quello che più ti estrania dalla realtà?
Qualsiasi libro, purchè sia ben scritto.

18) Quello che avresti voluto scrivere tu?
Che domande.. "Harry Potter"! Sarei ricca sfondata. O magari la Bibbia. :-P

"Il libro dell'inquietudine di Bernardo Soares", Pessoa (è stato il mio boss a consigliarmelo, ne è talmente entusiasta che mi ha convinto). "Cose da salvare in caso d'incendio", Haley Tanner. "Kitchen Chinese", Ann Mah (è il prossimo in lista).

Henry James, Agatha Christie, Shirley Jackson.

THE COMPANY OF WOLVES (1984)

While she's asleep, the 13th years-old Rosaleen dreams about a village and its well, about her odious sister's death, about the fairy tales that Granny tells her, but above all she dreams about wolves: the real ones and the ones who conceal themselves among humans, hiding their sharp teeth. 

The film is inspired by Angela Carter's book "The Bloody Chamber" (1979) and it clearly refers to Little Red Riding Hood tale (I have a kind of obsession for it).

In my opinion the director Neil Jordan was superb in recreating the dreamy, dark and fairy-tale atmosphere and the powerful symbolism of Angela Carter's tales which makes this one of my favourite film ever.

Rosaleen, tredicenne inglese, dorme e sogna. 

Sogna un villaggio attorno al pozzo, sogna la morte dell'insopportabile sorella, sogna le fiabe della nonna, ma soprattutto sogna i lupi.

Sogna i lupi veri e quelli con il pelo dentro che usano parole dolci per nascondere i loro denti.

Il film è tratto dai racconti di Angela Carter contenuti nel libro "La Camera di Sangue" ed è chiaramente ispirato alla storia di Cappuccetto Rosso (per la quale ho una specie di ossessione).

Il fatto che il regista Neil Jordan sia riuscito pienamente a rendere sullo schermo l'atmosfera onirica, cupa e fantastica del libro, senza contare il forte simbolismo in cui affondano i racconti della Carter, ne fa uno dei miei film preferiti di sempre.

"Howl's Moving Castle" / "Il Castello Errante di Howl"

I've been waiting for ages to lay my hands on this book and now that finally it's mine I have to say I really love it! I haven't finished it yet just because I want its characters to keep me company for a little more.. 

I've been watching Miyazaki's films for the whole summer and even if I think that this book and its film are quite different, they are both very well done, with a great, original and exciting story.

Click here for the plot. I'll just tell you it involves a young girl turned into an old woman by an evil spell, a vain heartbreaker wizard, the Witch Of The Waste, a fire demon and, of course, a moving castle.

In the land of Ingary where such things as seven-league boots and cloaks of invisibility really exist, it is quite a misfortune to be born the eldest of the three. Everyone knows you are the one who will fail first, and worst, if the three of you set out to seek your fortunes.

More about Howl? Sophie thought desperately. 'I have to blacken his name!'.

Her mind was such a blank that for a second it actually seemed to her that Howl had no faults at all. How stupid! 

"Well, he's fickle, careless, selfish, and hysterical," she said. "Half the time I think he doesn't care what happens to anyone as long as he's alright, but then I find out how awfully kind he's been to someone. Then I think he's kind just when it suits him, only then I find out he undercharges poor people. I don't know, Your Majesty. He's a mess.”

Ho aspettato a lungo di avere tra le mani questo libro e ora che finalmente è in mio possesso cosa posso dire, a parte che lo amo alla follia? Non l'ho finito in un giorno solo perchè voglio godermi la compagnia dei suoi personaggi ancora un po'.. 

Sono reduce da un'estate a base di film di Miyazaki e anche se libro e film presentano delle notevoli differenze, li trovo entrambi veramente ben fatti, con una storia originale, divertente ed emozionante.

Qui la trama. Io mi limito a dirvi che coinvolge una giovane ragazza trasformata in una vecchina da un maleficio, un mago vanesio e rubacuori, la Strega delle Terre Desolate, un demone del fuoco e, ovviamente, un castello in movimento.

Nella terra di Ingary, dove realmente esistono cose come stivali delle sette leghe e mantelli che rendono invisibili, essere il primogenito di tre fratelli è considerata una sfortuna piuttosto grossa. Colui che nasce per primo, infatti, è anche quello destinato a sbagliare per primo; e sarà ancora peggio se sarà l’ultimo ad andarsene di casa in cerca di fortuna…

Qualcosa  di  più  su  Howl?  Sophie  si  mise  a  pensare disperatamente. 'Devo infangare il suo nome!'. La sua mente era assolutamente vuota. Per un secondo le sembrò che, in realtà, Howl  non avesse nemmeno un difetto. Che stupidaggine! 

"Bene, è volubile, trascurato, egoista e isterico. La maggior parte delle volte penso che non gliene importi niente di quello che succede agli altri purché lui stia bene, per poi scoprire come sappia essere terribilmente gentile con qualche persona. Subito dopo mi viene fatto di pensare che sia gentile solo quando conviene anche a lui, ma vengo smentita dallo scoprire che non si fa quasi pagare dalla povera gente per  i  suoi incantesimi. Insomma, non lo so, Vostra Maestà. Howl è un vero pasticcio!"

Non solo sono una lettrice compulsiva, sono anche una compratrice compulsiva di libri. Se passo davanti una libreria/negozio di libri usati DEVO entrarci. E se ci entro DEVO uscirne con almeno un libro. 
Tra i miei amici circolano diversi aneddoti divertenti in proposito.. il più famoso risale a quando frequentavo l'Università a Ferrara: ogni volta che andavo a fare la spesa tornavo a casa con un sacchetto di libri perchè davanti al supermercato c'era la Feltrinelli e le mie coinquiline la trovavano una cosa esilarante.. !

After Supper Ghost Stories (aka Told After Supper)

 "After supper ghost stories" is a nice little work of the famous Jerome K. Jerome. In this short book the english novelist uses his well-known humour to talk about an old Christmas tradition: telling ghost stories before going to bed on the Christmas Eve. 

"Whenever five or six English-speaking people meet round a fire on Christmas Eve, they start telling each other ghost stories. Nothing satisfies us on Christmas Eve but to hear each other tell authentic anedoctes about spectres."

"And besides, at Christmas time, everybody has quite enough to put up with in the way of a houseful of living relations, without wanting the ghosts of any dead ones mooning about the place, I am sure."

The writer and his friends tell each others short stories in front of the fireplace, as tradition, untill it's time to go to bed, but, maybe because of the wine, these stories are funny and not scary at all.

A nice book for the Christmas Eve.

"Storie di fantasmi per il dopocena" è una piccola, deliziosa opera del famoso Jerome K. Jerome. In questo libro lo scrittore inglese usa il suo noto umorismo per parlare di una vecchia tradizione natalizia: raccontarsi storie di fantasmi la Vigilia di Natale.

"Ogni volta che cinque, sei inglesi si raccolgono intorno a un fuoco, la Vigilia di Natale, incominciano a raccontarsi storie di fantasmi. Non siamo soddisfatti, la Vigilia di Natale, se ognuno non racconta i suoi aneddoti - autentici - sugli spettri."

"E' risaputo che a Natale tutti ne hanno già  abbastanza di dover sopportare una casa piena di parenti vivi, senza bisogno che anche i fantasmi di quelli morti si mettano in testa di farsi una passeggiata"

Lo scrittore e i suoi amici si raccontano brevi storie davanti al camino, come tradizione, fino a che è ora di andare a dormire, ma, forse complice il vino, queste storie risultano spassose e tutt'altro che terrificanti.

Un libro carino per aspettare la mezzanotte la Vigilia di Natale.

Goodnight Thoughts by Mutts

One of my favourite comics is Mutts by Patrick McDonnell.. Earl and Mooch are so cute! They are a lazy cat who loves his pink sock (Mooch) and a nice, cheerful, little dog (Earl). Their strips are always funny, cute and deep at the same time.

I thought that the following strips are quite appropriate for this time of the year, don't you think?

Uno dei miei fumetti preferiti è Mutts di Patrick McDonnell.. Earl e Mooch sono così carini! Sono un gatto pigro che ama il suo calzino rosa (Mooch) e un piccolo, dolce, gioioso cagnolino (Earl). Le loro strisce sono sempre buffe, carine e profonde allo stesso tempo.

Ho pensato che le seguenti strisce si adattino bene a questo periodo dell'anno, non credete?

“The turn of the screw” is a classic when you think about ghosts stories.. even if in the end we don’t know if it’s a novel about ghosts or about a mentally disturbed woman.

In an isolated house a young nanny of two children begins to feel a weird presence and to see sinister apparitions.. may they be the ghosts of the ex-nanny and her lover, dead under mysterious circumstances? Are they trying to harm the children?

It's really scary (yes, even if it was written in 1898) and the ending will surprise you.

There are lots of films taken from this novel: “Suspense” (1961) by Jack Clayton with Deborah Kerr, “The turn of the screw” (1999) with Colin Firth and Pam Ferris, “In a dark place” (2006) with Leelee Sobieski, “The turn of the screw” (2009) by Tim Fywell (visually very very beautiful) and many others.

"Giro di vite" è un classico quando si pensa a storie di fantasmi.. anche se alla fine non sappiamo se si tratta di un racconto di spettri o su una donna mentalmente disturbata.
In una casa isolata una giovane tata di due bambini inizia ad avvertire una strana presenza ed a vedere apparizioni sinistre.. che siano gli spiriti della tata precedente e del suo amante, morti in circostanze misteriose? Stanno cercando di fare del male ai bambini?
E' veramente terrificante (sì, anche se è stato scritto nel 1898) e il finale vi sorprenderà.

I'm sorry for my foreign readers, but this book hasn't been translated in English yet. Unfortunately, I say, because it's a very good one. The author is one of the most important parapsychology experts in Italy.

Starting from the ancient Greece to the contemporary period the writer talks about ghosts, haunted mansions and the first parapsychologists with many examples of real haunted experiences described in details.

There are also some pictures of these places: famous ones (Hampton Court, Donore House, La Malcontenta,..) and normal (but haunted) houses.

I confess I was pretty scared reading it at night. 

Real ghosts stories.. Brrr...

Mi dispiace per i miei lettori stranieri, ma questo libro non è ancora stato tradotto in inglese. Purtroppo, dico io, perchè è veramente bello. L'autore è uno dei più importanti esperti di parapsicologia in Italia.

Partendo dalla Grecia antica all'epoca contemporanea lo scrittore parla di fantasmi, case infestate e dei primi parapsicologi con esempi di vere esperienze di infestazione descritte nei dettagli.

Ci sono anche alcune immagini di questi posti: quelli famosi (Hampton Court, Donore House, La Malcontenta,..) e le case normali (ma infestate).

Confesso che mi ha spaventato parecchio leggerlo di notte. 

Vere storie di fantasmi.. Brrr...

I read this book few years ago while I was in Leeds. It was the Christmas period and I found it in the University bookshop. Definetely it's one of my favourite's ever. 

It's perfect: a good story about a bullied child who makes friend with a weird young girl with a very cold skin that comes out only at night (this is the simplified plot, the book is more elaborate), plus it's well written and set in the dark Sweden. 

It's not that easy to find a good horror book but, believe me, this is it.

Ho letto questo libro un paio di anni fa mentre ero a Leeds. Era il periodo di Natale e l'ho trovato nella libreria dell'Università. Sicuramente è uno dei miei libri preferiti di sempre.

E' perfetto: una buona storia su un ragazzino bulleggiato che fa amicizia con una strana ragazzina dalla pelle molto fredda che esce solo di notte (questa è la trama semplificata, il libro è molto più elaborato), in più è ben scritto e ambientato nella buia Svezia.

Non è facile trovare un buon libro horror ma, credetemi, questo lo è.

The plot: the young bookseller Margaret Lea is called by the famous Vida Winter, a successful writer with a mysterious past, to write her biography. So, between red-hair twins, fires, thoughtless doctors, cats, abandoned babies and disappeared housekeepers Margaret manages to shine a light on the writer's obscure past.

The book is very well written, the story is enthralling and flows quickly, it remainds me of the XIX century's novels with some gothic echoes.

Premetto che ho letto questo libro in 3 giorni nonostante siano 535 pagine.. non riuscivo a smettere! 

La trama: la giovane libraia Margaret Lea viene contattata dalla famosa Vida Winter, scrittrice di successo dal passato misterioso per scrivere la sua biografia. Ed è così che tra gemelle dai capelli rossi, incendi, dottori sconsiderati, gatti, bambini abbandonati e governanti scomparse Margaret riesce a fare luce sull'oscuro passato della romanziera.

E' scritto molto, molto bene, la storia è avvincente e scorre veloce, come impostazione ricorda un po' i romanzi dell'ottocento con qualche eco gotico. 

Consigliato.

Before going to PordenoneLegge with Martina, I promised myself that I wouldn't have bought any book at all.
The reason is that I have a pile of books as tall as me on my bedside table, my "reading waiting list".
Obviously i couldn't keep the resolution and I came home with these and a list of books I would like to read (other material for my waiting list).


Prima di andare a PordenoneLegge con Martina, mi ero ripromessa di non comprare assolutamente, per nessun motivo alcun libro.
Il motivo è presto detto: accanto al letto ho una pila alta quanto me di libri da leggere, la mia waiting list di lettura.
Ovviamente non sono riuscita a mantenere il mio proposito e sono tornata a casa con questi e una lista di libri che vorrei leggere (e quindi aggiungere alla pila).

Domani sarò a Pordenonelegge - Festa del Libro con gli Autori di Pordenone con Martina.

In particolare vado per l'incontro "Bright Star, la vita autentica di John Keats" con Elido Fazi e Masolino D'Amico e "Biblioterapia, quando la narrazione ci aiuta a stare meglio", incontro con Matteo Marzotto, Valentina D'Urso e Giuseppe Borgherini. 

Purtroppo, per motivi di tempo, non potrò assistere anche al "corner di poesia".

Tomorrow I'm going to be at Pordenonelegge - Book Festival with the Authors in Pordenone with Martina. 

I'm going to see "Bright Star, the authentic life of John Keats", talk with Elido Fazi and Masolino D'Amico and "Booktherapy, when books help us to feel better", talk with Matteo Marzotto, Valentina D'Urso and Giuseppe Borgherini.

Unfortunately, due to time reasons, I won't be able to see  also the "poetry corner".
