What's Wrong at the Lauderdale County Detention Center?

We don't know where the drugs come from. At least we can now rule out Vicky and her Tastykakes. We do know it's easy to blame the last inmate in for any drug deaths.

It is sad when Micky D's has better employees than the Lauderdale County Detention Center. We're sure cavity checks aren't fun for either party involved - or at least we hope not. Don't want a cavity check, don't get arrested.

We don't know where Harley Coyer got the drugs that killed him. Assuming the contraband did come from Russell Reatherford, why was he in the LCDC at that time? With his arrest record, the judicial system should have staged some kind of intervention long ago.

On the bright side, perhaps Tubi will decide to make a sequel to Prisoner of Love. We're sure Casey White could be counted on to reprise his role as the totally misunderstood felon whose only crime was looking for love.

After all, we don't want Brian Kohberger to steal any thunder from our Casey, now do we?

No Truth to Jail House Death Rumors

The Lauderdale County Detention Center recently experienced its second death this month. The inmate who died this week was a known alcoholic, and at least one family member is blaming the staff at the detention center. Should that facility be held accountable?

1. The healthcare staff at the jail monitored this inmate from the moment he entered the facility.

2. The inmate was transferred to NAMC as soon as he exhibited signs of distress.

3. Incarceration and hospitalization are difficult for alcoholics/drug addicts; however, (without trying to sound cruel) there is little recourse in a violent crime.

4. This inmate had been hospitalized last year, almost dying. At the time, he told friends that he had cancer - something a family member denies. An autopsy should establish a definitive cause of death.

Jail is not a Cancun vacation; you only get one of those if you're Ted Cruz. One way to avoid the detention center is not to stab your girlfriend. Pretty simple for most of us...

We understand that the PSS rally scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled. We have no information on the anti-Marxism gathering, but advise any intelligent person to stay home and keep warm. You might live longer...

Who's Trying to Silence Scottie Davis' Family?

Our last blog concerned Lauderdale County Detention Center inmate Scottie Davis and the critical injuries he received while incarcerated there. Currently Scottie has a 50/50 chance of survival and remains in Huntsville Hospital in NICU. Yes, the family has retained an attorney. Wouldn't you have?

Our last entry included the name of the victim's cousin, all with her permission. We offered up this information to our readers since another blogger has suggested the story was all in the head of our writers. We don't usually reveal sources, but in this case we felt it was important as long as Kimberly felt comfortable with it. Rest assured that if you contact us about anything, we will not use your name without permission.

Kimberly had first contacted us in April 2017 concerning a problem that we couldn't help her with. April 2017 - that was 18 months ago. We don't know how long Kimberly Harrison has had her account, but we can verify that it was that old. Now her account has been suspended for "verification."

Just who reported that Kimberly's account wasn't real? Who wanted to silence her? If they can silence her, the can silence us. If they can silence us, they can silence you. Think about that...

Who Should Come First? Why Do We Even Have to Ask This Question?

Two women stood side by side waiting on their orders at a small take-out restaurant. Bev and Jan had never met before, but after requisite chat about the weather, Bev mentioned her daughter had just recovered from scarlet fever. A mother herself, Jan knew this once common childhood illness derived from untreated strep throat. Did she dare ask?

Yes, she did ask why Bev was not aware of her daughter's illness sooner. Bev's answer, although heartbreaking, was telling. It seems Bev's sister's daughter had cancer, and she had been just too involved with her niece to notice how ill her own daughter was.

The above story is true. While there certainly were extenuating circumstances involved, Bev had nonetheless placed another's child before her own. Is this what we want for America? The plight of those seeking to immigrate to our country is heartbreaking, but we as a country in dire economic straits cannot properly take care of our own.

No, we shouldn't have to ask the question. Our citizens should come first. When we have full employment and proper medical care for all our citizens, then we can begin to consider those less fortunate who were born outside our borders. Those who think that policy sounds harsh have not stopped to consider the effect uncontrolled immigration has on our own citizens.

We recently mentioned the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Center located in Tuscumbia. A former inmate there provided an interesting description of every day life in the facility, but a former employee felt he had left out one of the most important parts.

It seem each detainee is allotted just three feet of toilet paper each day. Three feet for 24 hours? The children who are in the detention center are there because they have committed a crime. If they were adults they would be incarcerated in a county jail. Yet, don't county jails provide adequate toilet paper? We've heard the Florence-Lauderdale Detention Center has at times been out of soap, but never that they rationed toilet paper. Let this be a lesson to you if you're thinking of shooting into a school bus...

Hank Sherrod - He's Got Game

Henry Floyd Sherrod III, better known as Hank, is a Florence attorney specializing in civil rights cases and he's about to take on the Decatur Police Department. Like we said, he's got game.

A 1982 graduate of Tuscumbia's Deshler High School, Sherrod graduated from Birmingham Southern in 1986 and received his juris doctorate from Vanderbilt in 1989. Since 1990, he has practiced law in Florence. Sherrod describes himself as "a small town civil rights lawyer, runner, paddler, and non-conformist."

A member of the Alabama ACLU Board of Directors, Sherrod has previously taken on some interesting cases. He once represented Tony Lee Smith in his bid to practice Odinism while incarcerated in the Alabama Prison System. More recently, he won a well-deserved victory over Lauderdale County as attorney for Kevin Danley. As a result of that win, the Florence-Lauderdale Detention Center has revised its pepper spray policy. In other words, Sherrod gets results.

Now Sherrod is representing Daniel Wade Moore in a civil suit against the Decatur Police Department. Moore, accused of murdering Karen Tipton, has just been found not guilty after his third trial. The lawsuit involves Moore's initial trial, in which the judge declared a mistrial. At that time prosecutors received immunity from any charges of misconduct, but that immunity did not extend to the police, now charged with withholding and destroying evidence in the case.

Did Moore murder Tipton and escape with only the loss of a few years of his freedom and an extremely tarnished reputation? If so, that point is unfortunately moot. Did the Decatur Police conspire against Moore? The trial is set for November 20th; perhaps we'll have the answer then.

In the interim, kudos to Hank Sherrod for his work in the civil rights arena. If he isn't careful, he might give lawyers a good name.

The Florence-Lauderdale Detention Center

Recent news releases tell of coming inspections of Alabama city courts. Of the seven recently audited, only Courtland passed the financial audit. The Hanceville municipal court actually incurred legal charges. What will these auditors find when they visit the Shoals?

While the Florence-Lauderdale Detention Center is not directly connected to the city's municipal court, we sincerely hope that it will also be audited. If any of you have attempted to post funds to a prisoner's account recently, you are aware that it cannot be done in cash.

Is this because, the authorities want a record of what individuals post money to the books of certain inmates? Think again--it's because cash on hand has a way of going missing. Those working at the jail are not Rhodes Scholars, but that should not reflect on their honesty. If those in these positions are no better than those they supervise, what does this say about our current administration?

What's up with this: Sources close to Trophy Golf say the project is currently dead in the water. Any comment from Sheffield?
