Picasso's Sylvette

Today I worked some more on the Studying Under The Master's - Portraits and Self Portraits online class which started at the beginning of October and I'm now at week 2....been too busy...

Week 2 we are learning about Picasso and we painted his muse Sylvette - the Girl with the Ponytail. I looked at Picasso's layers and did it a little differently to the teacher, some I got right and some such as the cheek I got wrong. I had a little trouble with the sgraffito - which is scratching into the paint so I just used paint....

Here's some evolution shots:

I do wonder how she would look with gelli print clothes and hair....maybe tomorrow...

I put some small gelli print based canvases into my Etsy store today too...  :D

BlogtoberFest 2014 - Day 27 - Painting for Arts Festival

Here is my painting for the local arts festival which I will deliver this afternoon.

Funky Flower Power, Acrylic on Canvas, 51cm x 51cm, 20" x 20"

Here is the other one I painted but didn't like it. I will paint over this or I may add a layer of gelli print collage.

What do you think?  Any thoughts?

Funky Flower Power

Over the past few weeks I've been creating flowers.

Flower Power, Acrylic, 60cm x 60cm, 20" x 20"

Here are some evolution pics...

This one I added gelli print flowers to the canvas and I had some trouble with it, threw a tantrum and then covered it with white gesso, the painted over it and wiped back some of the paint and the gesso...sigh....It's not how I wanted it to turn out...I wanted to show off the gelli prints but didn't like the ones I'd chosen....

I grabbed some old canvases to experiment with my Funky Flowers idea...

This one has had many transformations from Nice Girl to Poppies and then to Funky Flowers...

This one has also had many transformations too from being part of a four some abstract landscape to more Funky Flowers....

This one too...

So I had to make a flower stencil for the gelli plate!!

And it all started when I made these postcards for a swap...

So I've been busy this month painting flowers...which is your favourite painting?

New Painting

Here's my latest painting - I'm not sure if it's finished yet - deciding whether I should outline the stencilled area with black. What do you think?  I'm lacking a lot of confidence lately when it comes to my paintings...Are they good enough to exhibit?

Here's the painting with my stencil on it:

Here's the different layers - as you can see it started out as a landscape painting....

If you're like me and trying to get your mojo back then try these:

1.  Flora Bowley's Boot Camp - it's free and it's aimed at reinvigorating your creativity - and there's a giveaway to her e-course!

2.  Tracy Verdugo is giving away some places on her e-course too!

3. Into drawing faces/portraits - the 29 Faces Sept 2014 starts on Sept 1st.

Have fun!!

Gum Leaves - Gelli Prints and Mixed Media

Many artists have a particular style and create a variety of works in that style. But not me. Unfortuantely.  I've picked a subject and created artwork in different mediums - gelli plate, mixed media and acrylic using a layering/block out technique.

Gum Leaves 1 - Gelli Prints

I created some gelli prints as I wanted to print onto canvas using my scrunched up paper technique for texture, so these were experimental.  I placed the gum leaves onto the gelli plate then pulled the print and then took the leaves off to create the second/ghost print.

Here's the small canvas I experimented on - previously I had collaged sewing patterns onto it and done some washes and dry brushing over it. I didn't press down hard enough in certain places for the paint to lift off the plate and onto the canvas.

Gum Leaves 2 - Mixed Media

Gum Leaves 2, Mixed Media, 61cm x 92cm, 24" x 36"

This painting originally looked like this, it was part of a series that I did in 2012.

I used soft pastel to outline the leaves, then I cut out greaseproof paper to mask off the leaves before placing it onto the gelli plate to created the white background.  I had to do this 6 times and when the paint is on the plate you have to move that canvas quick to get it on there before the paint dries. I don't think I'll be doing that technique again as the scrunched up paper texture didn't really show through - this is probably due to the sewing pattern I collaged onto the canvas being very textural/bumpy.

I then painted some washes over the white section and then used a brayer/roller with a dark colour (phalo turquoise) to pick up the bumps in the paper for a more textured look.

The left hand leaf could probably use a little more contrast to highlight it more so I'll think about that...

Here's a couple of detailed photos to try and see the sewing patterns underneath:

Gum Leaves 3 - Acylics - layering and block out technique.

So I grabbed another painting I had started but not yet finished and covered it in warm colours then cool colours then pastels then stamped all over it and here's where it's at (I actually find this very freeing otherwise the painting sits there and shouts out FAILURE!!!! everytime I walk past it - instead it should shout out FINISH ME!! PLEASE!!):

What's next??  Well, tune in later in the week and find out!!!  (By then I shall know too!)  :D

PS  Do you love creating gelli prints?  Want a place to discuss gelli printing?  To show off your work?  Share your ideas? Discuss the pros and cons of different paints/paper/plates/tools etc?  Get some great ideas on what to do with the thousands of prints you have created?
Inspire and be inspired as a part of the Gelatin Printing Enthusiasts Facebook Group. I would love for you to join me there.

Jacobean Florals

Weeks ago I started working on this old canvas that already had many paintings on it. I gessoed and painted over it and then got out the stencils and had some fun with them and finally painted on the Jacobean Florals. Today I finished all the gold outlining...

Today is Day 5 of One Story Down photo a day challenge: 30 days of gratitude edition November 2013 I am grateful to have finished this piece of creativity.

Here are the evolution pics:

I feel that the background is too busy for the flowers....Here are some of my other paintings with stencil backgrounds and blocking out...

I may do some more stencil backgrounds and Jacobean Florals - like this last one but with a stencil background...

BF 2013 The Big Cover Up

Over the weekend I decided to cover up some old paintings which I had not varnished - the Mean Girl and The Nice Girl - The reason I created them and that part of my life is over and done with and I'm glad they are gone. I glued on pages from old books - a French dictionary and some of the works of Shakespeare.  Unfortunately there are air bubbles under some of the pages as I rushed the process, which is very naughty of me.

On Monday I used a large palette knife to apply a warm layer and the cool layer on the right hand painting, and a brush for the left hand one as a contrast.  I think the palette knife was bought at a hardware store, so it's not technically an art tool but if you know me then you know I like to use all sorts of household tools for my art such as the rubber squares you use to open jars and kitchen sponge for stamping.

Top - the Nice Girl and the Mean Girl paintings.

Middle and bottom - the collage cover up process.

Top - the warm layer

Bottom - the cool layer

Left - with a brush

Right - with a palette knife.

Have you ever covered up an old painting?  Tomorrow I'll show you another old painting I've been covering up....
