Number 1 Child Returns

Abby returned from sleep-over camp yesterday. We picked her up from the bus and she wanted to head straight home.

At 25 days, it was the longest time she's been away from home.

She had a great time, met new friends from all over the US and Canada, and had such a good experience that she wants to go back next year.

I think she actually grew a few inches while she was away and likely gained some more wisdom as well and lost a baby tooth while she was there.

The first thing she did on returning home after hugging the Jett was to give her bookshelf a hug.

That's my girl.

After that was a hot shower for her, and a festive welcome home meal.

This was followed by the washing of tons of camp laundry.

She had a glowing review of the camp, its activities, her new friends, and most especially its awesome counselors that now Leah is all fired up to go with her next year.

I remember my mother always telling me that I grew a few inches each summer while I was at camp. Always did too, I know because she measured me before and after each stay. Well, maybe not a few inches each time but at least one or two. I always loved my home comings but our apartment sure always seemed smaller, a lot smaller, after a summer at camp!

I went to sleep away camp for 5 summers, forced on me by the nuns at my grammar school. I imagine that the church helped pay for it since we were dirt por. I hated going each year but pretty much loved being there. I had a lot of mostly excellent experiences and learned how to shoot while there.

She really did grow some while she was gone in size and in personal growth. Now we need to take her shopping for new clothes as her pants are turning into capris (before having daughters I had no idea what the heck a capri was...).

I used to go to summer church camp every summer. Last time was sailing camp, where we ran amuck on the lake with two-man sailboats. My pal and I almost got sent home for damaging several boats by ramming each other and for starting a war--with injuries--with the adjoining canoe camp. (That "ramming" thing again.)

Heh. When a bunch of us from work used to go for weekend canoeing trips it wasn't unusual to hear "Ramming speed!"
