Winter Beach Party

By Marci

So my cousin Melanie lives 75 minutes south of us, and we're really far away from most family members, so we have to arrange to see each other at least once per month.   My Soldier is off at training in Georgia for two weeks, and her daughter had a half day at school, so we just had get together to play for the day.

My oldest daughter has been concerned recently that she is missing out on all the fun at home while she's at school.  So, Melanie planned a great surprise for when she got off the bus.  Welcome to the [sun] + E Beach Party.
This one's for the Cornell graduate.
And here's a snippet of Big D from the party that went on earlier in the day.
When it was all said and done: "That beach party...I just didn't even expect it.  It was fantastic!"

See Fish Finish!

by candace

You ready to see the space in the house that makes me the most happy? The loft/playroom area! I love how it turned out. It would have never looked like this without my sister Stefanie. In fact, most of the house would not look like it does without her. She really is amazing. She even sacrificed her life to get the Subway art (seen below) hung on the wall.

I wanted the play area to be functional and fun. I bought the white cabinet to hold books and some toys but I bought the big white toy box so most of the toys could be thrown it there...not organized but hopefully realistic for G to help me clean up. There is a swing, a desk, a mirror, an ABC poster, a chalkboard wall, magnet boards to hang pictures or G's art, and—best of all—chairs for the adults.

The black wall is chalkboard paint. The orange things above the abacus are magnet boards...waiting for G to color some pictures so I can hang them up there. Our family picture is printed on metal!

My mom and I made this :)

Where did I get it?
White cabinet, white toy box, swing, gray cabinet above chairs, orange magnet boards, crazy light: IKEA
Orange desk: 2modern
Abacus: CB2
Subway art, gray chairs: World Market
ABC art, orange bird cage: Z Gallerie

What do you think? Any ideas to make it more fun or functional?

EGGS! Take Two

by Marci

Saturday we began and mostly finished the project of painting the chicken coop.  Our cousins joined us, and all the kids participated.  The guinea hens squawked at high volume through the entire process.
Before
 Primer
 Topcoat(s)

The chickens must like the color: 1. because they've been pecking the paint off the walls like crazy, ahhh! And 2. because we got our first egg the next evening. We've been anticipating this day for almost five months!  Here's a congested description of how the second egg was secured (this morning).

See Fish Smiles

By Marci

Our baby is such a smiler (with a sweet hairdo)!  I'm so thankful to have another happy, healthy little one.  I love to watch her wake up and then see her face light up when she sees mine...

See Fish Raise Chickens

By Amy

We are on a chicken raising frenzy in the Fish family. At this point I believe four of the nine adult children are raising hens.
Nine years ago when we moved to the Upper Midwest, my husband Greg insisted that we buy a house in one of two cities where we could have chickens. Time passed and he never really showed too much interest in building a coop and getting going until this past spring when he decided it was time. He loved having animals at home a a kid and thought it would be a great way to show our kids more responsibility and work ethic. Greg hunted down a 20-year-old kid from church who is incredibly handy. He asked him to draw some sketches and Jonathan came through with 4 different possibilities. Greg told him to build the one that was most appealing to him and a month later we had an amazing coop and 16 chickens.
I grew up in a very suburban town south of Chicago. I had never even seen a mouse except at the pet store or a cow except on the side of the road. When those chicks arrived on June 30th I had no idea what I had gotten into. They stayed in my laundry room for a month and my kids named each one. We have Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons and Americaunas. We have given away 7 since, but we are left with 9 crazy hens who will start laying eggs any day. We cannot wait! Will the first be brown or green?
By Marci

Without meaning to, we also started the chicken coop project within weeks of Amy and Greg.  Moving around with the military, we've never had a place where we could raise chickens until now.  But what finally sent me over the edge was our tick population, some of which carry Lyme disease.  Greg and I also grew up with guinea fowl, and their specialty is eating ticks.  So, we decided to get both chickens and guineas.
Guineas are the cutest as babies but have quite the ugly heads and obnoxious sounds as adults.
We have 16 hens of the following varieties: Rhode Island Reds, Plymouth Rocks, and Americaunas.  Well, we thought "hens" until Dancey turned out to be a rooster.

Michael did some research on coops and solicited the expert help of Paul, Dave, Kurt, Candace and Big D. I was also sucked into design and hard labor, even though I was less-than-stellar help at 8 months pregnant. A few weeks and many popsicles later, we had a mostly completed and very large coop! We will report someday in the future that we have electricity and a paint job.

Our chickens are four months old today, so we hope to see eggs anytime now!

Fish Family Favorites: Baby Stuff!

by candace

I only have one child and he is only thirteen months old so I am not the expert but there are a few favorite things I've used over the past year:

VIDEO MONITOR
I have one similar to this. I totally thought this wasn't necessary but then the in-laws bought it for us. We love it! It's so fun to see what he is actually doing in there. And G (my child) doesn't make much noise...he doesn't cry when he wakes up so the only way I know he is awake is because I can see him. It's a lot of money but well worth it! Here is the little man sleeping...

BOTTLE DRYING RACK
If you use bottles you will love one of these.

MUSLIN BLANKETS
I know these blankets are becoming really trendy and there is a reason for that...they are amazing. I love them and they are pretty much the only blankets we've used for this little guy. I have a few by aden + anais (sold many places including Target) and I have a couple from Bambino Land (shown below). The Bambino Land ones may be a little bit softer but they are totally comparable.

TOMMEE TIPPEE BIBS
These funny bibs are my favorite. They have a little scoop that catches a lot, there is good coverage, they are easy to clean, and G can't pull them off!

More favorites to come...

Fish Family Favorites: Conference Weekend

By Marci

We enjoyed our church's semi-annual General Conference this weekend.  This picture of Michael "listening" to conference with all of our daughters makes me think of this great talk, one of our favorites.
