Take-the-Cake Tuesday: Crafty Comrades

Welcome to a new weekly feature at Take a Second Glantz!
Every Tuesday, I'll celebrate a few(ish) things that really take the cake.

It's no secret that I have a lot of crafty comrades. Today's episode of TtC Tuesday celebrates some of their handiwork.

Laurie made an awesome wreath to celebrate the Fourth of July. I'm not a huge Independence Day decorator, but I really dig this. I'm thinking about making one of these for the door of my religious school classroom, wrapping the wreath in white rope and decorating it with one American flag and one Israeli flag.

Kati made an amazing map craft, representing her family and the places they come from, for her mom's birthday. I'd really like to make a layout like this to document where my parents and I were born.

Sarabeth made these lovely corner bookmarks that are great alternatives to more traditional place holders. I'm going to have to try her tutorial during my next rainy craft day.

Today, ladies, I raise my fork to you (and your mad crafting skills). You take the cake.

Take a "Glantz" at this!

In lieu of spending time here today, I would like to introduce you to my SIL's blog, Crazy Mom of 3. She's new to the blogosphere, and I'm so excited that she chose this as her outlet to record the hilarious stories of my beautiful nieces and nephew. Welcome to this fun and supportive community, Crazy Mom. Happy blogging!

Hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday weekend.

Bloggy friend show & tell - Part 2

I mean to post this yesterday, but I got distracted by Glee. Last night's episode was a theatre nerd's dream come true! I could go on and on, but I'll spare you. Instead, here is my second installment of bloggy feel goods.
Like yesterday, I'm disabling the comments on this post in hopes you'll visit a few of my bloggy friends and leave them the love.

If you haven't yet seen this video about The Animal Odd Couple, give it a whirl. It's a good one for kiddies, too!

Bloggy friend show & tell - Part 1

This morning, I started writing a really heavy post that was a bit of a downer. I decided that this is not the best way to start out a week. So instead, I have decided to share with you (in no particular order) a few things I read in the blogosphere today that made me feel good. I hope they make you feel good, too.

Okay, I bookmarked way too many for one post, so I'll have to turn this into a two parter.

The comments for this post have been turned off in hopes you'll visit some of my bloggy friends and leave them the comment love instead.

If you still have the Monday blahs after all that, take a look at this. I dare you not to laugh. Happy Monday!

Have I mentioned my love affair with YAL?

Meadow and Rain were gracious enough to let me geek out about young adult literature on their blog today.

Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in...

...the sunshine iiiin.

The beautiful Kelly brightened my weekend with this lovely, and since Mondays are usually dreary, I thought today would be the perfect time to share some sunshine.

Thank you for thinking of me, Kelly! If you aren't familiar with Kelly's blog, you should go visit. She is both insightful and funny, and her comments always make me smile.

And now for the rules:
1. Put the logo in your post or within your blog.
2. Pass the award onto 12 fellow bloggers.
3. Link the nominees within your post.
4. Let the nominees know they have received this award by leaving a comment on their blogs.
5. Share the love and link to the person who gave you the award.

You have no idea how glad I am that I don't have to share "interesting" facts about me for this one. Actually, yeah, you're probably gladder than I am. ☺

Here are 12 bloggy buddies, in no particular order, who bring sunshine to my days.
  1. Meadow and Rain for their snarky sense of humor and great conversations about YA and FF
  2. Jenny for always getting me, no matter how crazy I may sound to others
  3. April P for always starting my day with a smile and cheering me up when I'm down

Beautiful Bloggers

Two of my favorite ladies, Jenny and Colleen, were incredibly sweet in giving me this Beautiful Blogger award. Thank you for the warm fuzzies that got me all sniffly. It's so appropriate that they were given this award, because they are incredibly beautiful friends. If you don't know them yet, you should get acquainted.

Like Jenny said, she and I have a real-life connection (we're not going to talk about how many years we've known each other), made stronger by the wonderful world of the Internet. Simply put, Jenny has a heart of gold. She is always at the ready to celebrate my happiness or offer a virtual hug and a word of encouragement when I'm in need. All you need to read is one post to realize that Jenny is incredibly gifted with the written word. I will be first in line at her book signing, something I truly believe will happen for her if she wants it. Always open to trying something new, she's so much fun to share online ventures with, and I seriously can't wait until we one day get to play in real life again.

Colleen put it best: she is a soul sister. First bonding over soap opera hunks, we quickly learned that we have a frightening amount of interests and life experiences in common. Perhaps most crazy and hilarious, we found out that we are connected in real life by only one degree of separation. AND that we lived in the same place at the same time - for years. But it wasn't until a decade later that the Internet gods would bring us together. Colleen is a sweetheart. She is a warm and caring soul, a wonderfully supportive friend, and is incredibly honest and heartfelt in her blogging. I have yet to meet Colleen IRL, but it will happen one day soon.

This is how we play:

1. Thank the person who nominated you for the award (see above).
2. Copy and paste the award on your blog (also see above).
3. Link to the person who nominated you for the award (again, see above).
4. Share seven interesting things about yourself.
5. Nominate your own seven Beautiful Bloggers.

Can we skip Step 4? It's hard to think of one interesting thing right now, let alone seven. Is it cheating to repeat previously posted facts? I guess repetition makes them less interesting, huh? *Sigh.*
  1. My mother had a water birth. Ironically, I don't know how to swim. (Before you freak out, shouting about how I should know how to swim being a FL girl, may I remind you that I lived in freezing NH during those formative swimming lesson years.)
  2. I earned (and I mean earned) the "Most Dramatic" superlative my senior year of high school. Ever since, I have been trying to prove those "Most Likely to Succeed" people wrong.
  3. This un-athletic soul was captain of the kickball team in 2nd (3rd?) grade. It was less about how well I kicked the ball and more about how bossy I was.
  4. I leave a trail of hair ties wherever I go. In any given day, I'll put my hair up and take it back down  ten times. It's like a tic.
  5. I hoard Cadbury Creme Eggs. It's my goal to have enough in my pantry to eat them at least 6 months out of 12.
  6. I'm queen of delayed gratification. Even though I get super excited when my favorite magazines arrive in the mail, I pile them up and wait for a "rainy day" to read them. Maybe there's a connection between this and #5.
  7. Even though I'm too far along in life for certain dreams to come true, it doesn't stop me from occasionally (or often) daydreaming about becoming a musical theatre star (or soap opera actress) when I grow up. Okay, so maybe I'm not fighting #2 as hard as I thought.
Perhaps that should've been called "random facts." Oh, well. And now for the fun part. In the past month, I've had the pleasure of getting to know some beautiful new-to-me bloggers. This award is for them.
  1. Cheri is not only beautiful, but also makes beautiful things. Between her art journal and her weekly gratitude entries, Cheri sees and captures beauty in the world and shares it with her readers. Moreover, she is an incredibly supportive bloggy friend, and I'm so glad to have met her.
  2. I met Sarah through GTT and am really glad to have found her blog. Sarah has a great sense of humor, as is evident by her Tivo post, but she also writes beautifully. I also love that I can tweet with her early in the morning (Twitter insomniacs unite). ☺
  3. It has been so fun talking to Erin in the short time I've known her. I can already tell she's a beautiful person. This post is near and dear to my heart, even though I'm not a mom, and I absolutely love Erin's candidness. I also have great respect for her ability to improvise.
  4. As co-owner of one of my favorite Etsy storesKatie is a beautiful sewer. She is also a mom to three beauties (Big Monkey, Little Monkey and Little Monkette... how cute is that?). A great resource for PKU-friendly recipes, I think she's beautiful for helping other parents.
  5. Amanda's sense of humor is a beauty. She had me hooked with this post and continued to keep me lurking with hilarities like these tales from the ER, though this Bachelor post might be my favorite. I'm looking forward to future laughs with Amanda and getting to know her better.
  6. I've known Angie on Twitter for a while (thanks to Colleen), but I only recently found her blog. Angie provides such beautiful warm fuzzies (I mean, how can you be in a bad mood after reading this?). Her posts, like this one, are a great mix of heartfelt honesty and humor.
  7. This one is less of an award presentation and more of a shameless plug. My dear friend Marissa is one of the most beautiful people I know. She's the skip of a curling team, and they are headed to Club Nationals today. They'll be blogging about it here. Please show them some love.
In slightly related news, because my readership has multiplied far beyond my hope of having 10 readers, I would like to reward you, my beautiful bloggy friends, with a little giveaway. Details TBA, so stay tuned. I hope you all have a beautiful weekend!

Friday Fragments

I have finally, slowly been catching up on my blog reader this week. There are so many good posts, I wanted to use these Friday Fragments to brag on a few of my bloggy friends.

Mommy's Idea
There were so many others that I wish I had time to share, but I'm due at the airport to pick up my girlfriend (assuming the Snowpacolypse doesn't foil our plans AGAIN). Hope you all have a great weekend!

Coming Soon

Lately, whenever I start panicking about things I can't control, I put on a movie. It's the only thing that distracts me completely and helps to pass the time. My "On Demand" has seen more action in the past two weeks than it has in the entire time I've had it. As a result, I've seen some really good flicks that I probably otherwise wouldn't have watched (and now I finally know what all the Basic Instinct fuss is about).

I'm not a "must see it now" person when it comes to most movies, so watching them on demand or via Netflix a few months later is perfectly acceptable to me. However, there are a few flicks coming out this year that I must see on the big screen:

1. Eclipse
No explanation needed. (If you need one, you must be new to this site. ) If you know me at all, then you probably also know that this is a movie I'll see ten times more than once in the theater.

2. Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, and Helen Bonham Carter. Need I say more? These three musketeers are a dream team when it comes to bringing the dark to life. And the cherry on top is Alan Rickman. Not sold? Two words: Sweeney Todd. I rest my case.

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I
Because Snape is larger than life and thus deserves to be viewed that way. This is another one that I'll probably see multiple times. I'm on the verge of sobbing just thinking about this beginning of the end.

4. Sex and the City 2
I'm a little nervous that this sequel is going to ruin it for me, but I can't not watch it.

These movies I don't have to see on the big screen, but I'll anxiously be awaiting their rental:

1. Valentine's Day
With so many good-looking awesome actors, how can you not want to see this?

2. Remember Me
Because I love me some angst.

3. The Runaways
Joan Jett rocks, and as much as I rag on KStew, she looks like she rocks this part.

4. Letters to Juliet
Hubby will make fun of me for this one, but it looks too cute to miss.

5. Salt
Angelina Jolie + action = HOT

What are you looking forward to seeing in 2010?

Making Smiles on Faces

While attempting to catch up on my blog reader last night (to say I'm behind is an understatement - can you guys stop writing for a little while, please?), I was so touched to see that my friend April presented me with this Making Smiles on Faces Award. April, it has been so fun getting know you through our online scrapbook classes, the blogosphere, and the Twittersphere. You bring a smile to my face, and I'm glad to call you my friend.

To accept this award, I have to name five random facts about me (I'll try not to repeat myself from last time).
  1. My love of Broadway musicals carries over into my real life. I can turn anything and everything into a musical and frequently do. Hubby never knows when I'm going to bust out into song and dance. Give me a song, any song, and I can make up new lyrics appropriate to the situation completely on the fly. I call it a talent. Hubby calls it a sickness.
  2. I sometimes flutter my eyes when I roll them. I never knew I did this until Hubby pointed it out when we started dating (apparently I rolled my eyes at him a lot - you should hear the jokes he tells). He likes it so much, that he'll withstand an eye roll from me just on the off chance he gets to see it. ☺
  3. While I like the instant gratification of email and Twitter, I tend to prefer delayed gratification in my "me" activities. For instance, instead of ripping into a new magazine when I receive it, I put it in a pile (which looks more like a stockpile right now) for a rainy day. Similarly, I tend to hoard gift cards (unless it's a gift card to iTunes... that puppy gets used the second I get it).
  4. I watch TV shows and movies I like over and over and OVER again. It's like a mix between comfort and nostalgia (I have even been known to - I can't believe I'm admitting this - replay scenes from old soap operas on YouTube). Even though I've seen them a bazillion times, it's difficult for me to turn off an episode of Friends, Law & Order SVU, NCIS, or 90210.
  5. I wish my cat hadn't been spade when I got her. She's a fluffy white sweetheart, and I would have loved to have made more of her.
Now for the fun part. I get to pass this award along to five people. If you're reading this blog or talk to me on Twitter, you deserve this award because all of your comments bring a smile to my face. And for that, I thank all of you. Since I received the award from an online friend who I plan to meet IRL next year, I decided to "officially" give the award to five online friends that I also plan to meet IRL sometime next year.
  1. Jenny, okay, so I know you IRL, but I figure it's not really cheating since we haven't seen each other in like a gajillion years. Thanks to the virtual worlds to which we belong, we have learned so much about each other, making us way closer now than we ever were in high school. Whether we're talking toys of the 80s, foods that make us puke, or more serious "life" issues, you always make me smile. You're also an incredibly loyal cheerleader. I can't wait to finally give you a real-life hug one of these days!
  2. Margie, you make me smile constantly. The night we watched Twilight together virtually, I thought my side was going to bust, you had me laughing so hard. In addition to being someone I can have a lot of fun with, you've been a supportive friend, and I've also been introduced to a lot of new things and people because of you. And we ARE meeting 209 days from now at the premiere of Eclipse. ☺
  3. Sarabeth, I will also be meeting you 209 days from now. ☺ Sometimes I forget that we haven't met IRL because we got to know each other so fast. You have been a thoughtful, supportive friend from Day 1, and I can always count on you to put a smile on my face. Like your sister, you have introduced me to so many new things and people, and I'm thankful to you both for welcoming me into your circle with open arms.
  4. Colleen, from Gator football, to hobbies, to soap opera hunks, we've shared a lot of smiles in a short amount of time. It's been so fun getting to know my virtual soul sister. I swear, it's like we were separated at birth. The craziest part is that we were practically under each other's noses, and our paths didn't cross until years later in the virtual world. Timing is everything, I guess. Our IRL paths *will* cross, though, when I visit Florida next year. I believe we have some dishing to do over a drink or two.
  5. Amy, okay, so again I have to defend myself that I'm not really cheating because even though I know you IRL, I haven't seen you since... I don't remember when. You make me smile in so many ways - from the pictures you share of your niece and nephew, to the enjoyment you get from baking and Disney, to the beautiful things you make. I'm so glad we've been able to reconnect virtually, and I hope to collect on an IRL hug one day soon.

    Monday Mentions

I'm loving my bloggy friend Jen's new Monday Mentions meme. I find so many great reads, products, and gossip through it!

    • My first mention is completely self-serving. It's to say that I really, truly had planned to blog well before this post. I started writing both Girl Talk Thursday and Friday Fragments posts, but I was too tired at the time to finish them. If you're looking for fun blog fodder, check them out, along with Saturday Word Wall.
    • As I've previously mentioned, the Girl Talk site has introduced me to some pretty awesome girls and their blogs. Nic and Kelly inspired me last week with the personal stories they so bravely shared with their readers. You rock, girls!
    • Saturday was World Card Making Day. Look at this beautiful card I received from Yvette. This surprise brightened up my weekend, Yvette, so thank you.

    • Having been sick most of the weekend, I spent a lot of time in front of the TV. A mention needs to go to Kristen Stewart in Speak. Although I didn't love her portrayal of Bella in Twilight, she nailed the character of Melinda Sordino.
    • Did you know that it's Great Books Week? If you're a reader, check out the Great Books Week Blog Tour. They have some great prompts to think about.
That does it for me tonight, folks. Have a good one!
    • PS. Hubby and I are watching Lady Gaga on SNL right now. I'm putting this gyroscope costume on my Christmas list.

    Breaking the rules

Since all I have for you today are random thoughts, I decided to break the rules and play Friday Fragments on Sunday. I'm such a rebel!

    Friday Fragments?

*And speaking of memes (and doing them on the wrong day), Saturdays have a new meme from knitpurlgurl: Saturday Word Wall.

I actually created this on the right day but neglected to post it, so here it is a day late.

What a fun way to recap your day!

*My girl Jenny has a fabulous giveaway on her blog right now. Check her out for a chance to win an 18x24 custom poster!

    Neurotic, Yet Classy

*My Patrick Swayze marathon continued today with The Outsiders (the complete novel version) and Dirty Dancing (the 20th anniversary edition). While I've seen these movies countless times, what I hadn't yet watched were the Dirty Dancing special features. O.M.G. There is one deleted scene (do not click if you are at work or have children with you) that had it been included, I'm pretty sure the movie would have required a rating higher than PG-13. *swoon*

*I am first catching up on all the TV I missed while I was in Portugal. One of the shows I DVR'd was the Daytime Emmy Awards. Sesame Street was celebrating their 40th year of broadcasting (WOW). By far the best moment of the show (although I was super excited that Susan Haskell won Outstanding Lead Actress) was seeing the Sesame Street cast's acceptance of their Lifetime Achievement award. Enjoy a stroll down memory lane with Big Bird and crew. And have a great night!

    A helping hand

So many of you were generous in your efforts to help me raise money for the Memory Walk (we reached our goal with three weeks to spare--rock on! or maybe I should say walk on?) that I wanted to return the favor.

MonicaMcNeill's family is sponsoring a virtual food drive to benefit the North Texas Food Bank. The story behind her efforts is truly inspirational. I feel better knowing that the future is in the hands of children like hers.

Cathy Zielske has started a Scrapbookers for Clean Water campaign (but you, of course, don't need to be a scrapbooker to donate). I love that she's using her celebrity within the blogosphere for such a great cause.

So if you have a few bucks to spare this week, please head on over to their sites and help them out.

Kudos, ladies, and best of luck with your efforts!

    Glantzing ahead...

Stop rolling your eyes-- I haven't used the pun in a really long time!

Fun & exciting things are coming your way, so I thought I'd take a minute to give you a sneak peek.

*September 4–6, my bloggy friend Sara is hosting a blog hop, inspired by Operation Nice. I'll be a stop along the tour, and your blog can be, too. Just click the button below for details. Several participating blogs will be giving away blog candy, so be sure to check back next weekend to do a little hopping.

*September 8 will be my first blogoversary. (singing)Happy blogoversary, happy blogoversary...To celebrate and say thanks to those of you who put up with all my puns, I'll be giving away a few gifts. Winners will be drawn on September 15, so you'll have a whole week to rack up entries (details will be posted on 9/8).

In case you need your appetite whetted... someone will receive a gift from one of my favorite Etsy shops.

And of course, there will be a scrapbooking gift among others.

*And last, but perhaps most excitedly (for me, at least), is that I will be blogging from overseas starting September 5. I'm saying goodbye to Hubby, Mimi, and my job for a while to visit my dad in Portugal and finally step foot into Spain (which has been a dream of mine for the past 15 years). I've bought every adapter and converter known to man (more to be said about that later) so that I can share my travel adventures with you.

    photo "courtesy" of my dad
(Daddy, do you mind if I swipe one of your photos? Thanks!)

So if I'm off the grid for a little while, you can see that I have a lot to prepare for! Talk to you next weekend if not before. J

    It's raining men...

...over at Jen's Daily Mish Mash.

I always look forward to her carefully selected eye candy, but today's theme was of great interest to me. So much so, I even made a suggestion that wound up making the cut.

Head on over and check out the picks for Sexy Men of Daytime Soaps.

While I cannot deny the hunkiness of all those posted, I still maintain that my guy is sexiest. J

    Happy drooling looking!
