DC owes their TV success to Buffy

DC has had a pretty good success with their super hero TV shows in spite of underwhelming showings in the box office.   How do they hit that teen-twenty-something market so effectively?  Well they recreate Buffy in every show.
Buffy had her Scooby team.   Every successful DC show has replicated this formula.  It might not be obvious unless you watch the shows back to back to back though.  After watching Smallville, Arrow, and The Flash, you can turn on Supergirl and wonder, "who is the character that is actually a wolf in sheep's clothing.

"Oh, they just have a team dynamic and this is true of every show," you might say. Yes, to a degree.  All of these shoes have the same characters mapped out.  Hacker/science (admittedly, almost all of the Flash characters fall under this heading), comic relief, wise mentor, not quite good/evil character, and somewhere along the line another super friend to come to help when chips are down.  This is exactly the Buffy formula, I think it might be the first time this formula is used on TV.  It is a slight tweak to the actual Scooby gang (from Scooby-do).
Other pieces of the formula include Monster of the week with big bad theme throughout season.  Special circumstance that creates all the evil they are to fight/most villains have a common background/origin.
It really is a can't miss formula and only becomes obvious when you have three shows on one network using it at the same time under the banner of an expanded universe.

If you like the DC shows and have not seen Buffy, I suggest that you check it out.  While the DC shows are arguably good, Buffy was great (for the most part) and really pretty revolutionary in some episodes.

Todd and the Book of Pure Evil

A show with a title like that, I had to check out.  Boy am I glad that I did.  Todd… comes on Fearnet.  While I don’t have Fearnet, I do have access to their free onDemand offerings.  The show is rated MA mostly for language.  It is not safe for kiddies in the least.  The show seems some weird mix between Buffy, Evil Dead, and Wayne’s World.
The premise of the show is that there is a magic book of pure evil that feeds off of emotional needs and grants the holder of the book the thing they most desire.  Not unlike the monkey’s paw, there are many unintended consequences, most ending in bloodshed and death.  Todd is the first to use the book and is saved by Jenny, whose dad went missing while investigating the book.  Todd is guided by three metal head stoners from the eighties that hang out in the high school parking lot, cryptically guiding him towards his destiny.  He also gets advice from the school janitor (Jason Mewes).  Todd’s best friend and the smartest girl in school round out the Scooby Gang.
The town seems to have a Satanic Cult and the school guidance counselor is part of it and he is trying to get the book for the cult.  He also seems to know a little about what has happened to Jenny’s dad.  The actor that plays him does a great job of being ridiculously creepy.
Overall, the show is hilarious.  It is very low budget and way over the top and doesn’t take itself seriously at all.  Every single episode has made me laugh.  Here are some examples of episodes:  1. Stupidest boy in school desires to be the smartest person in school.  The book doesn’t make him smarter, but instead creates a fog that makes everyone else dumber, dangerously so.  2. The schools only gay kid is tired of getting picked on for being gay.  He wants everyone else to know what it is like to be a gay boy in high school and every guy in the school becomes gay, except for the original boy who is now the only strait guy.  The other boys still pick on him for being different and the girls, having their boyfriends turned gay, go insane and get homicidal.

Happy 30th Birthday Buffy!

Buffy appears in literature such as the Buffy ...Image via Wikipedia
Yes, Buffy Summers, fictional vampire slayer, turns 30 today.  It somehow makes me feel old, eventhough I am older than her.  I suggest you celebrate by heading down to your local comic shop and picking up the final issue of season 8 that is released today.  Wear a birthday hat and sing while you are there.  In honor of Buffy I will post some iconic pictures.

Buffy the Vampire Soda

The wonderful people over at Jones Soda have graced us with Buffy Collector's Edition Sodas.  I mean, this is pretty cool.  They are a bit pricey though $12.99/6-pack and $21.99/12-pack.

Personally I would have to drink these Buffy the Vampire Slayer sodas and then refill them with something else.  Jones soda is good stuff. I am not sure that my wife would let me display these and they would have to be displayed.

There are a total of six flavors with Buffy: Season 8 inspired names and label art.
The Flavor are:
Buffy's Blue Bubblegum (pictured)
Dawns a Centaur! Rootbeer
Xander's Strawberry Lime Elixer
Twilight's Old Moon Orange-Cream
Willow's Green Apple Witches Brew
And Giles' Grape Potion

Right of Passage-Aliens (1986)

Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
As a parent, it is hard to know when to introduce certian things to your child.  You don't want to do things too soon but you don't want to baby them too much either.  As with solid foods, training wheels, and swimming, the movie Aliens needs to be perfectly timed.  Too early and you may tramuatize a vulnerable mind into having nightmares, too late and you can't really introduce them to it at all because they have heard about it from friends or seen it at a sleep over or they just aren't interested.

Danielle Soloud- awesome artist

Just thought I would point everyone to an exceptional artist that I just randomly found on blogger.  She does commision work and has an impressive body of work on display at her site.

Her name is Danielle Soloud and it looks like she does the con circuit, so check her schedule and find her when she is near you.  I posted some examples of her work to the left.  For anyone that doesn't know, they are Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harley Quinn.
