Cold Frame Sunflowers

John Next Door has some new dies out this week, the box frame, window pane and my favourite, the sunflower. This box frame is similar to a past one but this one is just under 6inches square.

The frame was cut from Kraft card, cutting the straight window panes in the front. For the shelves I die cut the edge of the box frame three times, this gave me the right size to fit inside the frame after a little tweeking on the length. The shelves were made and offered up before gluing to make sure they would fit, I was going to have three but after this step it became two, it didn't look right and the pots wouldn't fit.

Once the shelves were in place redline tape was added to the back of them and a plain off white watercolour card square was stuck in as the backing panel. Fixing the backing to the shelves was important and stopped it bowing out behind the pots.
A woodgrain frame was die cut in Kraft card and inked with brown to highlight the pattern, this was then stuck on the front around the window opening.
A small card stand was also cut in Kraft card ready to go on the back of the box once finished.

For the pots a small flowerpot punch and some orange card was used, a little ink stippled on the pots knocked back the bright orange and a gentle curve added to give them shape.
For the foliage I used lots of different dies form John's previous releases, cut in various shades of green and inked up with a variety of colours to make them all look different. The sunflowers were cut in yellow and the centres filled with some flock type granules from stash.
To get each pot to stand on the shelf a small strip of card was cut and folded to form a little square loop, this loop was stuck to the back of the pot and then each pot was stuck to the shelf with the same loop.
With all pots in position a tall sunflower was die cut and added to the outside of the frame and the card stand was glued on the back.

Rainbow Frame

This card was made using the cut out frame left over from the card in the last post. If you haven't seen it then this was white card that has been coloured with the new Mica Magic Spring set from John Next Door.
Mica Magic doesn't just colour card, it will work on many different surfaces, including vellum. The flowers were cut in vellum using the Cornflower die set and the corresponding leaves. Both flowers and leaves were coloured with the mica, for a stronger colour work on the front and for a paler colour work on the back of the vellum.
To mount up on a white card blank I used some bright green card that was a close match to one of the mica colours. On top of this I used some pink Craft Artist glitter card covered with a die cut layer of a sort of squashed berry colour, again similar to one of the mica colours used. The berry and glitter layer was mounted on 1mm foam while the rainbow frame was mounted on 2mm foam tape over the berry card leaving a border showing.
Once the frame was in place I was able to add the flowers and leaves to pop out from within the frame, filling in the open areas on the berry card.
This card has used up some offcuts and a few new bits, it's a good way to make great use of what you've already got on your work bench from previous projects.

Cherry Blossom Light Box

The new Art Deco dies from John Next Door made me think of oriental style projects. Rather than a card I decided to make a box scene with internal lighting.
To begin with I die cut a box shape in dark brown pearl card, twice, one for the bottom and one for the lid.
Using the Cassandre die I cut the lid, this gave me a perfectly sized hole to drop a gold die cut of Cassandre into and a brown version to trim up and glue along the outside edges of the lid.
To keep the gold die cut in place I attached some thick acetate to the inside of the lid opening and glued the gold die cut on to it.

To create a mid depth layer I used the same box die, cut one layer in kraft card and then trimmed the sides down to half the depth of the main box. In hindsight this could have been a little shallower as the image at the back of the box didn't show as well as I had hoped.
In the centre of the kraft layer I die cut the trees from another of JND's die sets, Four Seasons and attached some pink flowers o look like cherry blossom. Each flower is shaped and has some yellow pollen like flock in the middle.

At the back of the box I used a white card layer with an oriental style peel off stuck to it, this layer was glued flat inside the box back.
To create a misty effect I used a sheet of vellum glued at the back of the trees, this would allow the lights to shine through and the black on white image to be seen.
Before assembling the kraft layer I used a hole punch on the corner of the panel to thread the lights through, there was also a hole punched in the back of the brown box for the lights to pass through from behind.

The kraft layer was assembled and the lights run around the outside edge and fixed in place. I put the kraft layer in the box back and then glued the box corners together, this made sure the kraft layer would fit inside and gave a tight fit so it wouldn't shift about in transit.
There were half the lights left to be attached around the inside of the box on the top layer, these were fixed in place too.
Fixing the lights is not as fiddly as it sounds, as long as you remember to thread them through from the back of the box, that way the battery pack will stay on the outside. For this box I used some redline tape to secure the battery pack so it was easy to use and would stay in place. It is possible to change the batteries once they go flat so you can keep your scene for a long time.
To get the box to stand up I cut a stand from the same brown card as the box and glued it in place.

To finish the box I put the lid over the back and glued the corner flaps together to create a tight fit. With the battery pack outside the box there should be no need to take the lid off, but it will come off if necessary.
Using kraft card and the Twigs die I cut two twigs and covered them with the same flowers as used inside. To hide the join in the twigs I made a small knot using Japanese Mizuhiki cord in shades of pink and hot glued it in place.

Spring Flowers

A new challenge at The Paper Funday begins today, the theme this month is Spring. My chosen image is a digi stamp called Scribbled Flora from Fred, She Said.
I chose to print my image on green card rather than white, it gives the colours a different look and saves colouring in the background.
For the colouring I have used some inexpensive metallic markers from Scribblicious, there are six colours in the box. Some colours came out showing more metallic sheen than others but on the whole I think the experiment was worthwhile.
For the grass area at the bottom I used a watercolour pencil, it came out a little more subtle than the pen would have and adds another shade of green to the mix.
I die cut a Kraft frame and stamped woodgrain on it, there was a noticeable join on the left where I had to match up the stamping, so I chose to cover it with a few flowers.
The frame was mounted on 1mm foam tape to give it a little dimension and a more realistic look.
I printed the image again on white card and used the same pens to colour the flowers. The colours came out a little brighter but not too noticeable.
Each flower head was cut out, shaped with a ball tool and then added to the frame, now they look like they were always meant to be there.
It's quite a simple card with no greeting so it can be used for almost any occasion and as it's nice and thin it will go standard post too.
Come and join us at The Paper Funday with your Spring creations, anything as long as it's made with paper or card and follows our\theme.

Christmas Flowers

This months challenge at Christmas Craft Creations is Christmas Flowers, it doesn't have to be a card either, we accept scrapbook layouts, ATC's or 3D projects.
This card is based on an idea I saw on Pinterest by Lucy Abrams, thank you Lucy.
The card blank was covered with a patterned paper from stash, wrapping the paper over the spine for a neater presentation.
I then cut a mat layer to fit the card and die cut two poinsettia shapes out of it.  The shapes were cut with a deliberate 'off the edge' look. I also cut the greeting in the red same card.
Using a dark red and cream based backing paper gives the whole card a vintage look, especially after the addition of Distress ink.

Using Distress ink I coloured all the edges of the red card to darken them a little and coloured over the greetings too.
The idea was to mount the red panel on foam over the patterned paper, but I found it a bit too fiddly to get foam into the flower centre, so I opted to stick it flat on to the paper. The greeting was stuck flat on to the card, at opposite corners.
Using a gold pen I ran around the entire red card layer with a stitch pattern, this was nice but didn't show up at certain angles. To make the stitching more obvious I then used a fine line black pen to run alongside each gold stitch.
I also drew around each greeting to make it stand out more. There is a gold pearl in the centre of each flower to help pick out the gold in the stitching.
It's almost flat so would go as standard post, I shall choose a more basic shape next time I try this so I can use foam tape to lift the top layer a little.
It may a little early in the year for some of you to be making cards for Christmas but the more you do now the easier it will be come November, so come and join us at Christmas Craft Creations once a month....or more if you wish...to build up that stash of cards.

Mothers Day With Vectoria Designs

The Paper Funday has two sponsors this month, Vectoria Designs is one of them. This gorgeous paper set is called Spring Crocus, it has three pretty papers and three collage style top sheets.
The backing paper I chose to use has tiny butterflies all over it, I have used my photo package to manipulate the colours to pick out shades of green as a nod to the optional theme in the challenge of Irish Luck/Green.
I'm not very tech savvy but I do like to play around and alter my digi papers and images to suit my project, thankfully my photo package is very easy to use.
I covered a 7x5 card blank with the paper, wrapping the paper over the spine onto the back to stop it lifting when folded. To continue with the green theme I coloured the edges of the paper with a little Peeled Paint Distress Ink.

The topper was also altered to have a green hue and printed out as a smaller image, it has a little purple in the flowers and butterflies so I chose to mat this panel on purple card.
I made a small slit in the envelope before sticking to the mat layer so I could tuck a tiny tag into the envelope. The matted image was then put on foam tape and stuck down at an angle on to the backing paper.
The words are die cut gold mirri card, the die is for a stencil cut so to get the letters to stay in the die I put some masking tape across the back of the die. With the letters in the die I carefully added tiny spots of glue to the back of the letters, turned the die over and placed it on the backing paper. Gently peeling away the masking tape I used a pokey tool to pop the letters out of the die and stick them to the paper, it's a bit fiddly but it works well and all the letters are perfectly placed.
Come and join us at The Paper Funday, we're an Anything Goes challenge with a twist, some great sponsors and lots of DT inspiration.

Mica Magic on MDF

This weekends project was to use Mica Magic from Craft Artist, it's mica in a soft cake form, not a powder, a bit like eye shadow but definitely NOT for eyes.
John has said this product was developed for colouring flower foam but has turned out to be very useful on other materials aswell.
With this in mind I die cut a foam Cornflower and then coloured it with the Mica Magic Basic Brights set. I coloured front and back, then pulled and twisted the petals to give them some shape.
The best thing for sticking the foam together seems to be Glue Glaze, again from Craft Artist, although I'm sure there are other glues that will work, it just needs to be thick and strong.

Once the flower was assembled I moved on to an MDF tag from Stix2. I have seen Mica Magic used on MDF with no need for a primer, I wanted to see if this was easy and what it would look like.
Not wishing to stick much to the tag once the mica was applied I chose to glue down some spare die cuts I had lying in my stash. These were bits left over from previous projects so they were a mix of colours, this would show me just what the micas would look like over a coloured base. All the bits were cut from card so reasonably sturdy but not too thick.

Once all the bits were dry I began to apply the Mica Magic with my finger, you can apply it with a dauber or a sponge if you wish. I started with a mix of greens at the bottom and blended it into blues with a touch of  mauve at the top.
The coverage was very good, it blended very well and took to the die cuts well. It does make a difference what colour the substrate is, dark colours really show of the mica, while paler colours give the mica a more muted look.
There is a halo around the die cuts were the mica didn't reach the very edge but I quite like this look. If you don't want that then maybe the die cuts should be stuck on after colouring the background.
The corner die cut was black which mixed with the brown MDF underneath and the bronze mica gives the look of aged metal.
Once all the mica had been applied I gave the whole tag a buff with a cotton cloth to make it shine and to remove any stray bits, this is when you find out if you stuck all the die cuts down well!
The butterfly looked a little dull so I decided to try some Pebeo wax, it worked well, I wasn't sure if the two mediums would mix well but they get along very nicely. The wax is a great medium but only available in a limited colour pallet, the Mica Magic comes in a wide range of colours so now it's possible to get that great shine in greens, blues, purples and more.
The last thing to do after buffing the tag was to add the flower, this was stuck on with Glue Glaze. I like just the one flower, less is more on this tag as it's meant to show off the Mica Magic and it's great coverage of the MDF. A small length of seam binding coloured with inks added the finishing touch.

Conclusions on Mica Magic - great coverage on MDF, no primer needed. Easy to apply.  An amazing shine once buffed.  The ability to colour almost anything porous - so does not work on glass, plastic or metal.

Dipped Wire Flowers

It started as a comparison between inks, paints and varnish to colour PVA dipped wire flowers, but what do you do with them once you've made them?.....  I made a card. I enjoy the challenge of the experiment but there should be an end use for the ones that work and the ones that don't.....recycle.
I remember making these with my Mum when I was younger, I think the dipping medium we used was called something like 'Fantasy Film'. This method uses Stix2 Anything 3D PVA glue, it's a good strong glue with the consistency of double cream. I made a set of five small loops with jewellery wire, I'm sorry I don't know what gauge, you can bend it easily with your fingers and it will hold the shape.
Five small loops makes for a nice size flower, I did find that if the loops went beyond approximately one inch the glue had trouble forming a film, best to keep them under an inch at their widest point.
I bent the flowers into shape before dipping, if you try it afterwards you run the risk of splitting the film.
I decanted some of the 3D PVA into a tiny jam jar so I could dip the flowers into the glue easily. Dipping it in and lifting it out slowly seamed to work well. If the film breaks just dip it back in the jar and try again.
I only gave each flower one dip but you can dip again once the first is dry to thicken the film. Each flower was left overnight to dry out, the glue goes clear when dry so it's easy to tell when it's done but overnight makes sure it's set completely. I also made some leaves but I wasn't very happy with the shapes, something I need to try again I think.

I used four different mediums to colour the flowers and leaves:
  1) Leaves - Cactus green pearlescent Izink pigment ink dropper - painted on with a brush. Covers the wire as well as the film, great pearly sheen, no odour.
  2) Blue Flower - Stratosphere blue Izink pigment ink - has it's own brush in the lid. Covers both wire and film, dries matt, no odour.
  3) Pink Flower - Nail varnish - has it's own brush in the lid. Covers both wire and film, nice shine but rather smelly while working.
  4) Yellow Flower - Yellow Fabric Spray Paint - painted on with a brush. Covers well, more of a satin sheen and takes longer to dry completely, no odour.

So a good strong PVA works well, keep the loops small and try whatever you have in your stash. I really like the Izink bottle inks because they dry matt and most flowers are matt not glossy, plus there is a great range of colours and a little goes a long way. Thank you to Keep On Crafting for asking me to experiment with the Izink pigment bottles, it's been interesting and it's not finished yet.

Mandala Florals

These are the flowers and leaves from John Next Door that go with the mandala die set, something a little different, one set has a solid petal and another has an open petal and it's the same with the leaves.

For the centre panel I cut the purple card with the second solid die from the mandala set and cut the green card layer with a solid die from the Woodford set, they match very well.
Using the stencil words I cut the sentiment in the purple layer and backed it with some silver paper before putting it on foam tape over the green card.
I also cut two corners from the purple card and glued them on opposite corners, leaving the bottom left for the flower spray.
I had a piece of card left over from playing around with Brusho Purple, there was enough to cut some flowers and a couple of corners.
The corners were trimmed a little, stuck on silver paper and then cut out by hand. Once cut out I glued them together at the square tip to form a butterfly to fill the empty corner at the top of the card.
For the leaves I used two shades of green card, keeping the lighter for the open leaves and the dark for the solid. Using a ball tool and a soft mat the leaves were given a little shape.
The spray was built up on the card by tucking the leaves under the flowers and sticking them down. Each flower has a small silver pearl in the centre to tie in with the silver greeting and butterfly wings.
The Mandal die set may have been an exclusive to Hochanda but you will be able to get the flowers and leaves from your local craft shop.

Stencilled Oundle

This is another of the new die sets from John Next Door, he named it Oundle, the home of the Hochanda studio. I love this set, it has so many different possibilities with a beautiful shape at the heart of it all.
I decided to use the background die and the frame die as stencils, I used Lucy's trick and put a magnetic sheet under my card so the dies wouldn't move when I was colouring. I also masked off the outside edge to keep it clean, Stix2 stencil tape is perfect for this.
Once the card was all masked up I put the dies on and began to colour with Distress Ink using one of the amazing blending brushes from CraftsToo. I am so impressed with these brushes, they don't lift even the most delicate mylar stencil when colouring.
To get the chequered look I cleaned off the die and turned it over, turning it round didn't change the direction of the stripes, and inked again.
After removing all the tape I trimmed the card and die cut the centre shape, I also die cut the centre decorative die from a piece of teal card to go under the centre hole and embossed a piece of silver mirri to go behind that.
You can use these dies to emboss as well as cut, it's just a case of changing the 'sandwich' in your machine and using an embossing mat, a soft rubber like mat that will absorb the pressure from the dies edges stopping it from cutting through the card.
All the pieces were stuck together which looked OK, but not quite nice enough. The answer was to die cut a frame in white card and mount this with foam over the stencilled frame.
Luckily I had in my stash some teal card that matched the ink colour perfectly, sadly I have no idea where it came from so I'm using it sparingly. A mat layer of this teal card, with the centre cut out for another project, was added before going on a white card blank.
Using the Chrysanthemum die I cut from silver paper and made two flowers, one large and one small. Lesley's twigs are cut from silver mirri and the Aster Leaves were cut from the piece that came out of the mat layer.
I have started to use square cards with the fold at the top, like John does, as they stand well and look better on the mantle with full focus on the front rather than at an angle. I thought it would slide down and collapse but if you use a good card weight it doesn't budge.

Blue Noel

This sample was made using the new Sam's Circles die set from John Next door released last Sunday. It has several options for the centre piece, I chose the townscape for this card.
Using white card I die cut the star panel with the townscape in the centre, then I cut the NOEL in the space under the town. I also cut a flying Father Christmas in white card to add to the sky.
I mounted the die cut panel on to some blue mirri card, I thought this looked like a night sky but with added bling. Once the main panel was mounted I turned my Father Christmas over and stuck him down so he flies up from the town.
This panel was then mounted on foam tape over a white card blank, giving a little bit of depth, it could be posted but with the flowers it will probably end up being hand delivered.
The flowers were made using white card and the solid Poinsettia from 2018 and a stamen die in pearl silver paper for the centres. I like to shape my flowers just a little, I think it makes them look a little more real.
I have cut Lesley's Twigs in silver mirri card and a pine branch in pearl blue card, the foliage extends the floral decoration with too much fussiness and as John says the twigs allow you to get a base to work on for your arrangement.
Everything is stuck together with 3D PVA as it's nice and strong, I know Craft Artist glue is very good but I am a loyal supporter of this super strong PVA from Stix2 as it's never failed me yet.

I-Zink Birthday Flowers

The base for this special birthday card was all things I-Zink, well almost all things, with a splash of John Nextdoor. You will find a product list at the end of this post including which colours were used.

The leaves were made using pigment droppers on acetate. You need two pieces of acetate, drop the ink on one piece, then cover with the other piece and squish the colour between them, this is best done a sheet of paper towel as there may be some leakage along the sides. Pull the two pieces of acetate apart before the ink dries, this will give you two coloured sheets of acetate.

Once completely dry place the acetate on some double sided sticky sheet ready for die cutting. There are many ways of attaching acetate but I have found this to be the best way for me, as the adhesive is all over the acetate there are no visible marks once it's stuck down.
For this card I die cut one large, one medium and three small leaves from this A6 sheet.

For the flowers I used the Gerbera stamp and die set. I chose to colour the flowers before cutting them so that I wouldn't accidentally pull a petal off. Each flower is made up of three layers, all petals shaped before assembly.
The little embellishments in the centre came from my random stash box so I can't tell you where they came from but they were the perfect colour.
The Gerbera set produces six flowers each use so I made them all up, the ones that may not be used on the card would join the flower stash box for future use.
I lay the flowers on the cut to size white card topper and moved things around until happy with the arrangement, then it was time to peel of the backing on the two larger leaves and stick them in place. At this point I took a picture so I would remember what went where.
I took the flowers off and set them aside. Using a stencil and some I-Zink texture paste I put a butterfly on the largest leaf, while still wet I sprinkled it with a mix of teal and iridescent glitter and set it aside to dry.

Once the paste was dry I put two mat layers on the topper card, one in teal to match the butterfly and the other in dark brown to match the flower centres, then I stuck it onto a 6.75 inch white card blank. This was all done now so that the flowers didn't get squashed.
I needed to add a greeting but I wanted it to look like a plant label tucked in the posy. I have some wooden cutlery picked up on a recent outing, the handle of the fork was just the right size. The greeting is stamped in dark brown and the prongs cut off, to be kept for future use.

The flowers were laid back on the card, using the picture as guidance, to work out where to put the label. I then removed the flowers and drew round the end of the label so I knew where to stick it. Once firmly in place I added the flowers and stuck them down, the last little leaf was tucked into place at the end. I have kept the number of leaves and flowers odd as I think it looks a little more natural.
What do you do with a left over flower and a couple of leaves? Make a matching tag!
Using a white tag I ran around the edge with a little foil in teal and dark brown and stuck the flower and one leaf on the bottom.
A teal greeting cut from the same card as the mat layer made sure it all co-ordinates.
The I-Zink droppers can be added to water to make a coloured spray, perfect for dyeing cotton ribbon, again keeping the colours the same.
A special card and matching tag for a special birthday.

I didn't mean to publish this today, it was one of my application projects for John Next Door's Angels. It was around this time last year that I began working on my first Hochanda release for the Angels, I'm happy to say I'm still with them and still loving every minute of it.
