New Music: The Alarm, Love and Rockets, The Baseball Project, Parallax Project

A marvelous return from the Alarm, a collection of rare recordings from Love and Rockets, and a new album from The Baseball Project are available now.

Artist:
The Alarm
Title: Forwards (Twenty First Century Recording Company)
You might like if you enjoy: The Alarm, U2, Big Country, The Poppy Fields
Tell me more: Listening to Mike Peters' genuinely inspired and hopeful songs that soar across the Alarm's wonderful new album Forwards is to be filled with faith that each of us has worth and an inner strength to overcome any challenges that come our way. The anthemic rocker "Another Way" rings true as Peters sings: "Have you heard the news that it's all over/Have you heard them say, there's no way out of here? I don't believe it, there's always another way." Although Peters' first battled lymph cancer in the mid-1990s and more recently beginning in late 2022, the 64-year-old Wales-based artist sounds as amazing as ever. The majority of songs on Forwards were written by Peters in the hospital while he was undergoing chemo and battling cancer. On the gorgeous "Love and Forgiveness" he poignantly sings "I'm a man who's lost control of all that he owns/are you going to give me love and forgiveness?" The propulsive post-punk rocker "Next" reinforces Peters' survival mindset and his palpable joy at embracing life; "All the clocks are set to zero, now's the time to run/I hear the crack of the starting gun and I'm ready for what's next." Other great tracks on the album include the driving title track, the confessional "The Returning," survival-themed "Transition" and fiery "Love Disappearing." Peters (guitar, lead vocals, harmonica), James Stevenson (guitar, backing vocals), Jules Jones Peters (piano, organ, strings, backing vocals) and Smiley (drums, percussion, backing vocals) have created a masterful album that is a welcome and marvelous addition to the Alarm's terrific discography. Love and Rockets
Title: My Dark Twin (Beggars Banquet)
You might like if you enjoy: Love and Rockets, Bauhaus, The Cure, Tones on Tail
Tell me more: Since Love and Rockets announced their reunion to perform at the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena on May 20, 2023, there has been renewed interest in the English rock band formed in 1985 by former Bauhaus members Daniel Ash (vocals, guitar, organ), David J (vocals, bass, keyboards) and Kevin Haskins (drums, programming, backing vocals, sound effects). Now lovers of the group's groundbreaking alternative rock can get take a deep dive into the band's rich history via the 2CD set My Dark Twin; the 22-track collection revisits the sessions that gave birth to 1996's Sweet F.A. The title features eight previously unreleased versions and six unreleased songs from the Sweet F.A. sessions. Disc 1's marathon-length run includes the bewitching "The Fever," driving and melodic "That's Progress," dark "Words of a Fool," expansive "Pearl," pedal steel-swept "Shelf Life" and edgy 15-minute closer "U.O. Me." Disc 2 reveals more treasures as evidenced by the ambitious genre-bending "The Glittering Darkness," art rocker "California (Have a Nice Apocalypse)," fiery "Butterfly," lovely rough mix of "Sweet F.A." and heavy electronica sortie "Sweet Lover Hangover." The colorful 16-page booklet has new comments from the band about the recordings and notes from historian Andrew J Brooksbank. Information: www.facebook.com/LoveandRocketspage/.

The Baseball Project
Title: Grand Salami Time! (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: R.E.M., The Dream Syndicate, The Minus 5, Major League Baseball history
Tell me more: The Baseball Project is back with Grand Salami Time!, the aptly-titled supergroup's fourth album. Guitarist Peter Buck (R.E.M.), singer-guitarist-keyboardist Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5), bassist-vocalist Mike Mills (R.E.M.), drummer Linda Pitmon (the Filthy Friends) and guitarist-vocalist Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate) have delivered a fun-filled batch of great songs focused on baseball-related heroes and historical moments from America's pastime. My favorite early tracks on the wonderful disc include the wistful "Journeyman," the dreamy indie rocker "New Oh in Town" celebrating the already-legendary talents of Shohei Ohtani, and the dark "Disco Demolition" chronicling the notorious night at Comiskey Park where a riot broke out on the field resulting in the arrest of 37 in July 1979. The momentum continues via the driving "The All or Nothings," acoustic tale of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez's untimely death at age 24 in 2016 ("That's Living"), and power pop-flavored "Having Fun." The last song on the album, "The Voice of Baseball," fully celebrates broadcaster great Vin Scully. The informative 12-page booklet includes lyrics for the album's 16 songs along with short intros penned by the band shedding insight into each track. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

The Alarm reaches the summit in new video "Whatever" (inspired by John Lennon)

Conquering The Elements

Makes It To The Summit in New Video
“Whatever”

MARCH 27, 2023 (Wales, UK) – “Whenever I’ve been in hospital, I have projected my imagination towards recovery and the mountain summit has always been a place I aspire to get to as a sign of recovery,” says Mike Peters, vocalist/guitarist of THE ALARM who release their new single and video “Whatever” today, April 27, 2023. The video, which shows him hiking up a mountain during a snowstorm, is symbolic of his struggle to make it back to good health, as Peters continues to rebound from a serious leukemia relapse in 2022.  “If I can get back to the mountaintop, I’ll know I am on the right track.”

“I was inspired to write this song after hearing John Lennon sing ‘Whatever Gets You Thru The Night’ on the hospital radio. I thought to myself ‘Never mind the night, what am I going to do to get through life?’,” he told The Big Takeover, who premiered the video.  He elaborates, “The song ‘Whatever’ was born soon after and it’s really about the most simple, yet most important things like family, friends and loved ones who help you in the hours of need and an appreciation of life’s fundamental gifts such as being able to breathe, talk and to walk.”

Filmed on Moel Hiraddug, a mountain in Wales which “is literally right outside my front door in the village of Dyserth where I was born and raised,” the video carries a bit of symbolism in addition to portraying his uphill struggle with cancer. Carrying a retro relic of the ‘80s - the Sony Watchman, a suitcase and a mylar star balloon, Peters struggles amidst adverse conditions to make it up the summit to a television tower.

“All this carried me up the mountain towards an old abandoned tower that I have always been fascinated by,” he explains. “Often, when I look up to the mountain at night, I can sometimes see a light coming from inside the building and wonder who is up there and obviously using the place as a shelter. I tied my silver star (which is a symbol of the new record), to my suitcase of life belongings, and headed for the shelter. The snow was beginning to fall as I walked ever higher, and then with the wind picking up it literally felt like I was climbing through the life storm of recent times. I had brought an old Sony Watchman with me which was another symbol connecting the past to the future. Was this really the first portable screen I had owned, and precursor to the modern screens of devices that feed us news, information and psychobabble 24-7?”

“Whatever” is the third single from his forthcoming album Forwards (out June 2, 2023), following “Next” and title track “Forwards.”  Forwards is being released physically on both CD and Vinyl with the LP release featuring two different record sleeves and colored vinyl configurations. A classic green and white star white vinyl edition (Mike’s healing color combo), is being made available to outlets everywhere along with a unique Metallic Green vinyl limited edition available exclusively to independent record stores only.

Forwards is also being released in all digital formats including Hi-Res and Dolby Atmos editions. Pre-sale and pre-save is available here: https://ingrv.es/thealarmforwards.

Described by Bono of U2 as “the second greatest rock and roll band in the world”, Mike Peters has been the driving force behind The Alarm for over forty creative years of new music making, and dedication to presenting the band’s classic songs in ways both imaginative and inventive.

Out June 2, Title Track and Video Out TODAY
THE ALARM "Forwards"

FEBRUARY 28, 2023 (Wales, UK) – THE ALARM’s Mike Peters is returning to life after a year dominated by pneumonia and a serious leukemia relapse, announcing a triumphant new album, Forwards, out June 2, 2023 and a video for the title track, out today.

“I literally took my guitar into [the] hospital with me,” says Peters. “I was on the ward for such a long time, I started writing these songs in between IV sessions and the first people to hear the music were the very people who were trying to keep me alive.”

In between hospitalization periods, Peters took the band into the recording studio with producer George Williams (Babyshambles, Coloursøund) and—although barely able to speak due to the debilitating effects of chronic illness—he was able to focus the sessions on creating the music for ten new, life affirming Alarm songs.

“I’ve been to places only deep suffering can take the human spirit and, in the darkness, I clung onto every piece of light I could find to work my way back to life. This was the energy that drove me to write and record Forwards.

Forwards is alive with melody and invention and destined to contend for a top place amongst The Alarm’s extensive discography, one that boasts over 17 Top 50 UK singles and worldwide record sales of over six million. The previous three Alarm albums have all made the British Rock Album Chart Top 10 with Equals hitting number 2 in 2018, Sigma topping the chart in 2019, and Omega climbing to number 8 in 2022.

“A lot of artists have to kill to make a record like Forwards and with the challenges that came my way in 2022," he says."I certainly had to kill or be killed to realize the ambition in these songs. It was literally life or death making this record. I’ve already taken so much from life, that when I was in the hospital stricken with chronic illness, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be spared another opportunity to live. Fortunately for me, I was granted more time on earth and the challenge remains as ever, to make the most of every single second – forwards.”

The first order of business post-hospital was The Alarm’s triumphant return to the stage with the sold-out annual event The Gathering, which had been suspended in recent years due to the pandemic. More than 1,500 fans attended The Gathering. “People traveled from Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, USA, Australia, all over Europe and from various parts of the United Kingdom,” reports The North Wales Pioneer Newspaper. "The weekend has been the ultimate tonic for me. I’m back. The future has opened wide again for me,” Peters told the newspaper.

Pandemic Can't Stop The Music: The Alarm, Ally Venable, Strawbs

Fans of rising and established artists all have something to celebrate thanks to a trio of amazing studio albums released on Feb. 26, 2021.

Artist:
The Alarm
Title: WAЯ (InGrooves)
You might like if you enjoy: The Alarm, early U2, the Waterboys
Tell me more: Written, recorded and released between Jan. 6 and Feb. 26, 2021, the Alarm's newly-released WAЯ is a potent effort that proves that even during a deadly global pandemic great artists will rise to the occasion. Singer-songwriter-guitarist Mike Peters and company (keyboardist Jules Peters, drummer Steve 'Smiley' Barnard, multi-instrumentalist James Stevenson) along with producer George Williams have delivered an album of palpable power and relevance in tune with our troubled times. This is an album that roars, documenting an uncertain era with a fiery and authentic approach; the soaring sonicsphere is matched by Mike Peter's hard-hitting lyrics. The blistering "Protect And Survive," edgy "We Got This" (bolstered by Mike Peters' blasting harmonica work), the atmospheric "Tribes [Stop The War]," beautiful folk rocker "Still Unsafe," electronica-tinged rocker "Warriors" and spirited "Fail" are among the amazing cuts on the masterwork. The aptly-titled WAЯ (which is "RAW" spelled backwards) is a true return to form for the Alarm, all the more impressive given its creation and release took a mere 50 days during the COVID-19 outbreak. Information: TheAlarm.com.

Artist:
Ally Venable
Title: Heart Of Fire (Ruf Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Samantha Fish, Sue Foley, Ally Venable's "Texas Honey" LP
Tell me more: Kilgore, Texas-based singer-guitar great Ally Venable's newly-released fourth album Heart Of Fire confirms the 21-year-old prodigy is one of today's most talented young artists. She taps into the past but is able fuse electric blues and roots rock influences into her own infectious contemporary brew across the Jim Gaines-produced disc. The ferocious opener "Heart Of Fire," Delta-immersed foray "Played The Game," Southern blues rocker "Hateful Blues," melodic "Sad Situation" and dynamic reworking of the Bill Withers classic "Use Me" all serve as a showcase for Venable's skills as singer and guitar slinger. Her ambitious nine-minute instrumental tribute to blues guitar great Stevie Ray Vaughan ("Tribute to SRV") is heartfelt and impactful. Likewise, a poignant vocal duet with Southern rock great Devon Allman on "Road To Nowhere" shines bright, the track elevated by nuanced and artful guitar work ranging from ringing harmonics to a forceful lead solo. Guitar hero Kenny Wayne Shepherd lends his own virtuoso skills on the blues rock cut "Bring On The Pain." Information: AllyVenableBand.com.

Artist:
Strawbs
Title: Settlement (Esoteric Antenna)
You might like if you enjoy: The Zombies, Supertramp, Marillion
Tell me more: Strawbs are back. The legendary English band  whose self-titled debut album was released in 1969  has released a slew of acclaimed albums over the past 50+ years. Now the enduring quintet has returned with the stellar wide-ranging album Settlement that celebrates the group's rich history while also reflecting the here and now. The range of on-target selections includes the classic-rock styled title track, beautiful British folk gems "Strange Times" and "Each Manner of Man," yearning "Judgement Day," Celtic-flavored tale "The Visit," and instrumental trips "Flying Free" and "Chorale." Strawbs features founding member Dave Cousins (guitar, vocals, banjo, dulcimer) along with long-time members Dave Lambert (guitar, vocals), Chas Cronk (bass, guitar, vocals), Tony Fernandez (drums) and Dave Bainbridge (keyboards) - all of whom and several top-tier guest players worked with Germany-based producer Blue Weaver (a former keyboardist with Strawbs and long-time member of the Bee Gees' touring and recording band) to complete their parts from remote home studio settings during the pandemic to finish a truly-impressive full-length return. Settlement is available on audio CD and via 180 gram vinyl. Information: strawbsweb.co.uk.

The record is really starting to take shape”, says band frontman Mike. The responsive nature of the writing and recording situation has given rise to some radical thinking on how to instantly release the album into the modern world and also across all the major formats - stream, download, CD and LP.”

To release the album on vinyl, a specialist cutting-house has been engaged to hand-cut as many pre-ordered vinyl copies as possible, once the final master has been cut in Los Angeles by the legendary Howie Weinberg (Howie mastered The Alarm’s 2019 album ∑ Sigma, which entered the UK Rock Chart at No.1).

The digital edition of ‘War’ is being distributed internationally by InGrooves who have already paved the way for this groundbreaking release to appear on all digital service provider platforms on February 26th.

As the artwork has been created in advance, each CD/LP will also have the album title and band logo painted onto the cover by Mike Peters personally, with the tracklisting left intentionally blank so that fans can write in the song titles themselves, once they receive the completed work.

"I really want the fans to have access to this album as soon as its finished”, continues MikeWe have set ourselves a very tight deadline, and the music is already being created out in the open for all to see and hear. The technology is there so that fans who still have access to a CD burner and wish to get involved in the spirit of the project can do so by interacting with the creative process and play their own part in bringing this new Alarm album into the world.”

The Alarm – ‘War’ is available to order/pre-save now exclusively via www.thealarm.com
