New Music: The Who, Jack Rubies, Chris Stamey

The latest audio releases featuring The Who, Jack Rubies and Chris Stamey are available now.

Artist:
 The Who
Title: Live At Shea Stadium 1982 (Record label)
You might like if you enjoy: The Who, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend
Tell me more: The Who's 1982 tour was memorable for a number of reasons; notably it was the last to feature drummer Kenney Jones and would also mark the British band's last full scale tour until 1989. Now a marvelous live recording of The Who's complete Oct. 13, 1982 performance captured on the second of two nights at New York's Shea Stadium has been released on audio CD and 3LP vinyl (Live At She Stadium 1982). Among the stellar versions of Who classics performed by singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, keyboardist Tim Gorman and aforementioned Jones are the rousing "I Can't Explain," lively artfully reworked "Sister Disco," fiery "Baba O'Riley" and "Who Are You," stirring "Love Reign o'er Me," thrilling "Won't Get Fooled Again." Because The Who was touring in the wake of the band's tenth studio album It's Hard (released a mere month before the Shea Stadium show date), this tour provided the first chance to hear live performances of cuts from that masterwork; an inspired version of the John Entwistle-penned "Dangerous" and rousing take on "It's Hard" are early standouts on the concert recording while "Eminence Front" is heard via a marathon performance that is especially moving in its power. The concert closes with fully reworked covers of The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There," Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" and the 1962 Isley Brothers' hit "Twist and Shout" that collectively celebrate the power of rock 'n' roll. Insightful liner notes from Chris Roberts also provide additional depth on The Who and the band's 1982 performance. Information: MercuryStudios.co.

Artist:
 Jack Rubies
Title: Clocks Are Out Of Time (Big Stir Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The The, Nick Cave, Interpol, Blur
Tell me more: Reunited English quintet Jack Rubies are back with Clocks Are Out Of Time, the band's first new album in more than 30 years. The band's original lineup of Ian Wright (lead vocals, guitar), SD Ineson (backing vocals, guitar), Steve Brockway (bass), Lawrence Giltnane (percussion) and Peter Maxted (drums, and the album's producer) have created a unique soundscape that fuses 1990s Britpop with contemporary indie rock into something that is their own. So many standouts propel the 12-track album across its full span, delighting the listener with undeniable hooks, a kaleidoscope of sonic moods and genuine surprises. The bewitching opener "Hark," driving hypnotic rocker "Heaven Shook Me," dreamy "Hidey Hole," tuneful "Chandelier," playful "Poltergeist," exhilarating "Read My Mind," edgy "Shark Attack" and dazzling closer "I'll Give You More" all cast their power with a single listen. And the album's sumptuous reach only deepens with each subsequent listen. Information: bigstirrecords.com.

Artist:
 Chris Stamey
Title: ...The Great Escape (Schoolkids Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The dB's, Big Star, Richard X. Heyman, the Jayhawks
Tell me more: Fans of melodic and intelligent songcraft will want to grab Chris Stamey's wonderful new album ...The Great Escape. The 13-track disc album was written, recorded and produced by Stamey at Modern Recording in North Carolina and displays a masterful touch that shines across the disc. While the album revisits the soundscape Stamey explored on his classic 1987 and 1991 solo records (It's Alright and Fireworks, respectively) and 2004's Travels in the South), there is an additional and delightful Flying Burrito Brothers-meets-Jayhawks Americana spin to the selections. Loaded with melodic rock nuggets, the album features a slew of great tracks including the alt country-tinged opener "The Great Escape," shimmering "Realize," tender "She Might Look My Way" (the latter a cover of a lost classic co-written by Alex Chilton and Tommy Hoehn), Beach Boys flavored "I Will Try," jazzy "Back in New York" and prog rock mining pop gem "The Catherine's Wheel." Among the notable high-profile guests who join Stamey on the album are Peter Holsapple (organ), Don Dixon (acoustic bass), Mitch Easter (drums), as well as Eric Heywood  and Allyn Love (pedal steel).  Information: schoolkidsrecords.com.

New York, NY (January 18, 2024) — Mercury Studios will release the first official audio companion of Live At Shea Stadium 1982 on March 1, 2024. Previously released on DVD and Blu-ray in June 2015, The Who (Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Kenney Jones) delivered both classic tracks and rarely performed songs: “Pinball Wizard,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “My Generation,” “Substitute,” “Who Are You,” “I Can’t Explain,” “See Me Feel Me,” “Baba O’Riley,” and many more. The tour promoted the 1982 album It’s Hard and the set list was comprised of several tracks from that album, some of which the band would only play live on this tour.

The Who’s 1982 North American tour was their last to feature Kenney Jones on drums and the band did not tour again until 1989. This recording features the show from the second of their two nights at New York’s Shea Stadium and was recorded on October 13th 1982.

nugs.net Announces Livestream Premiere of

The Who’s Classic Albums Episode: The Who Sell Out

Watch the story behind The Who’s iconic album, streaming FREE April 22 on The Who’s official YouTube Channel and nugs.net

SANTA MONICA, CA – April 2, 2021 – Released in December 1967 The Who Sell Out reflected a remarkable year in popular culture. The album was originally planned by Pete Townshend and the band’s managers Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, as a loose concept album including jingles and commercials linking the songs stylized as a pirate radio broadcast. This concept was born out of necessity as their label and management wanted a new album and Townshend felt that he didn’t have enough songs.

In the early 1960s, pirate radio stations began broadcasting to the U.K. from offshore ships or abandoned sea forts from international waters to meet the growing need for pop and rock not offered by the BBC at that time. The ground-breaking original plan for Sell Out was to sell advertising space on the album but instead the band opted for writing their own jingles paying tribute to pirate radio stations and to parody an increasingly consumerist society.

The new Super Deluxe Edition of The Who Sell Out features 112 tracks, 47 of which are unreleased, an 80-page, hard-back full-color book, including rare period photos, memorabilia, track by track annotation and new sleeve notes by Pete Townshend.

The Super Deluxe package also includes nine posters and inserts, including replicas of;

20” x 30” original Adrian George album poster, a gig poster from The City Hall, Newcastle, a Saville Theatre show 8-page program, a business card for the Bag o’ Nails club, Kingly Street, a Who fan club photo of group, a flyer for Bath Pavilion concerts including The Who, a crack-back bumper sticker for Wonderful Radio London, Keith Moon’s Speakeasy Club membership card and a Who Fan Club newsletter.

As tasters for the set a series of digital EP’s are being released, the third of these released today includes previously unreleased versions of three songs from the studio sessions, the singles “I Can See For Miles” and “Magic Bus” and the outtake “Facts Of Life (AKA Birds & Bees).”

The Stereo Bonus Tracks Digital EP

“I Can See For Miles” (Full Version) (Previously Unreleased)

The masterpiece that is ‘I Can See For Miles’ had a long gestation, 6he basic track was cut in London and further overdubs were applied in New York and, according to some unconfirmed reports, Nashville before being mixed and mastered in Los Angeles. This is the complete master (take number unknown) with Pete’s count-in and guitar doodling on the intro and outro.

“Facts Of Life (AKA Birds & Bees)” (Backing Track New Remix)

When scouring The Who’s tape vault for this project, a backing track for ‘Facts Of Life’, a John Entwistle composition, was discovered. A home demo exists of the song with lyrics, but it appears to have only got this far when brought before The Who. Also recorded was an early run-through of ‘Deaf, Dumb And Blind Boy’ (later to become ‘Amazing Journey’ on Tommy). Unfortunately, all that remains is Pete demonstrating the opening section on piano.

“Magic Bus (Take 6)” (Previously Unreleased)

Several attempts were made to record this Bo Diddley-flavored composition that Pete had written and demoed back in 1965. “Take 6” starts with Keith playing claves, Pete on electric guitar and John on bass before Keith crashes in on drums. Roger and Pete provide guide vocals. This version was close to how the band performed the song on stage at the time. Another talkback exchange between Kit and Keith re: Moon’s unsolicited vocal interjections closes out the performance.

The homage to Pop Art is evident in both the advertising jingles and the iconic sleeve design created by David King who was the art director at the Sunday Times, and Roger Law who invented the Spitting Image TV show. The sleeve features four advertising images, taken by the renowned photographer David Montgomery, of each band member Odorono deodorant (Pete Townshend), Medac spot cream (Keith Moon), Charles Atlas (John Entwistle) and Roger Daltrey & Heinz baked beans. The story goes that Roger Daltrey caught pneumonia from sitting in the cold beans for too long.

Within the bold concept, were a batch of fabulous and diverse songs. “I Can See for Miles,” a top ten hit at the time, is a Who classic. “Rael,” a Townshend “mini-opera” with musical motifs that reappeared in Tommy and the psychedelic blast of “Armenia City In The Sky” and “Relax” are among the very best material anyone wrote during the 1960s.

One of the most extraordinary albums of any era, The Who Sell Out is The Who’s last “pop” album. Two years later came Tommy – a double concept album about a deaf, dumb and blind kid.

LOS ANGELES, CA – February 26, 2021 – Initially released in December 1967 and described latterly by Rolling Stone as “The Who’s finest album,” The Who Sell Out reflected a remarkable year in popular culture. As well as being forever immortalized as the moment when the counterculture and the “Love Generation” became a global phenomenon and “pop” began metamorphosing into “rock.”

The new Super Deluxe Edition of The Who Sell Out features 112 tracks, 46 of which are unreleased, an 80-page, hard-back, full-color book, including rare period photos, memorabilia, track-by-track annotation and new sleeve notes by Pete Townshend with comments from the likes of Pete Drummond (Radio London DJ), Richard Evans (designer) & Roy Flynn (the Speakeasy Club manager).

The Super Deluxe package also includes nine posters & inserts, including replicas of
20” x 30” original Adrian George album poster, a gig poster from The City Hall, Newcastle, a Saville Theatre show 8-page program, a business card for the Bag o’ Nails club, Kingly Street, a Who fan club photo of group, a flyer for Bath Pavilion concerts including The Who, a crack-back bumper sticker for Wonderful Radio London, Keith Moon’s Speakeasy Club membership card and a Who Fan Club newsletter.

As a taster for the set an EP of Pete Townshend’s previously unreleased demos has today been released on all streaming services including “Pictures Of Lily” (New remix, previously unreleased) “Kids! Do You Want Kids?” (AKA “Do You Want Kids, Kids?”)  (Previously unreleased) & “Odorono” (Previously unreleased).

The Who Sell Out was originally planned by Pete Townshend and the band’s managers Kit Lambert & Chris Stamp, as a loose concept album including jingles and commercials linking the songs stylised as a pirate radio broadcast. The Who Sell Out is a bold depiction of the period in which it was made, the tail-end of the “swinging-60s” meets pop-art mixed with psychedelia and straight-ahead pop. It’s a glorious blend of classic powerful Who instrumentation, melodic harmonies, satirical lyrical imagery crystallized for what was only the group’s third album. The album’s ambition and scope is unrivalled by the Who, or any other act from that period.

Within the bold concept, were a batch of fabulous and diverse songs. “I Can See for Miles,” a top ten hit at the time, is a Who classic. “Rael,” a Townshend “mini-opera” with musical motifs that reappeared in Tommy and the psychedelic blast of “Armenia City In The Sky” and “Relax” are among the very best material anyone wrote during the 1960s
