'August: Osage County' soundtrack set for release on Tuesday, Jan. 7

Well, tomorrow we see the first of the official 2014 releases. In addition to the Peter Gabriel And I'll Scratch Yours set for release on Jan. 7, here are details related to another notable release courtesy of a media release that landed in my inbox early this morning...

ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK OF “AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY
TO BE RELEASED ON JANUARY 7, 2014

A NEW SONG BY JD AND THE STRAIGHT SHOT, TRACKS BY BON IVER, ERIC CLAPTON, KINGS OF LEON
& BILLY SQUIER, COMPOSITIONS BY GUSTAVO SANTAOLALLA

Sony Music is proud to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack of August: Osage County, featuring songs specially written for the film by Kings of Leon and by JD and the Straight Shot, as well as celebrated songs by Bon Iver, Eric Clapton and Billy Squier. These tracks are backed up by new music composed by Gustavo Santaolalla and others.  The original motion picture soundtrack of August: Osage County is available on January 7, 2014.

The songs on the album make up an irresistible compilation. “Last Mile Home” by Kings of Leon, a soulful track with an understated guitar accompaniment, was specially written for the film by the band. The acoustic version of it was used for the end titles and the track featured on the album.  The simple, moving “Violet’s Song” by JD and the Straight Shot was also recorded for the movie, and as a special treat the soundtrack includes the pleasure of hearing the actor Benedict Cumberbatch perform as a singer (“Can’t Keep It Inside”). The album opens with eerie electronic echoings in “Himmon TX” by Bon Iver, with the smoky voice of the indie group’s frontman Justin Vernon. The third track is an absolute classic of country blues, “Lay Down Sally” from Eric Clapton’s album Slow Hand. A further well-known number is Billy Squiers’ hard-rock “The Stroke”. These veterans are joined by an up-and-coming star: the American singer-songwriter John Fullbright showcases his drawly Oklahoma vowels in the laid-back but energised “Gawd Above”.

To accompany these songs Gustavo Santaolalla and others have composed atmospheric film music. The multi-talented Santaolalla is best known for his work writing movie scores and producing albums. He has won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score, for his work on Babel and Brokeback Mountain, and two Grammy Awards as an album producer. He is also the founder of the electrorock-tango band Bajofondo, whose latest album, Presente, was recently released by Sony Music Masterworks. Of his  compositions for August: Osage County, the longest is the “End Credits” track, melodious and fittingly subdued music in which orchestral strings underlay twangy guitar chords. Santaolalla wrote two further pieces for the album. In addition, four short compositions by Adam Taylor highlight the pensive aspects of the movie, and to round everything off there is a brief but groovy hidden track by the Grammy-winning film and TV composer Mateo Messina.

August: Osage County is the much-anticipated movie version of an award-winning play with an all-star cast, including Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Abigail Breslin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, Margo Martindale, Dermot Mulroney, Julianne Nicholson, Sam Shepard and Misty Upham. This calls for a high-class soundtrack, a call which has been met by combining superb songs – both fine new releases and classics by famous performers – with excellent compositions by Gustavo Santaolalla, Adam Taylor and Mateo Messina.

About the film
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name made its Broadway debut in December 2007 after premiering at Chicago’s legendary Steppenwolf Theatre earlier that year. It continued with a successful international run and was the winner of five Tony Awards in 2008, including Best Play. AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY is directed by John Wells (THE COMPANY MEN).

Peter Gabriel's 'And I'll Scratch Yours' streaming on NPR's "First Listen"

Happy 2014 everybody. Here is an exciting release that landed in my inbox today...

PETER GABRIEL’S AND I’LL SCRATCH YOURS STREAMING NOW ON NPR “FIRST LISTEN”; OUT JANUARY 7 VIA REAL WORLD RECORDS

THE COMPANION TO CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SCRATCH MY BACK FEATURES ARCADE FIRE, LOU REED, DAVID BYRNE, BON IVER, FEIST, PAUL SIMON AND MANY MORE

INDUCTED INTO ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME THIS YEAR ALONGSIDE NIRVANA, HALL AND OATES AND KISS

Peter Gabriel, who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this April, will release And I’ll Scratch Yours on January 7 in the U.S. through Real WorldStreaming now onNPR’s “First Listen,” the album is the anticipated follow-up to 2010’s Scratch My Back, concluding a series of song exchanges in which Gabriel and other leading artists reinterpret each other’s songs. The upcoming collection features Lou ReedDavid ByrneArcade FireRegina SpektorFeist and others covering classic Gabriel songs such as “Shock the Monkey,” “Don’t Give Up,” and more. Full track listing is below.

Scratch My Back and And I’ll Scratch Yours are the culmination of a years-in-the-making songwriting swap. Gabriel chose songs from some of the greatest songwriters of the modern era and reshaped them, with the understanding that each selected artist would reciprocate. Gabriel explains, “Rather than make a traditional covers record, I thought it would be much more fun to create a new type of project in which artists communicated with each other and swapped a song for a song, i.e. you do one of mine and I’ll do one of yours, hence the title:Scratch My Back…And I’ll Scratch Yours.” Bearing in mind the caliber and careers of the artists whose songs he selected, it’s incredible that all but two songwriters were able to reciprocate. For those uncompleted swaps, Joseph Arthur and Feist willingly entered the fray.

And I’ll Scratch Yours is already receiving critical acclaim in the U.K., with the Evening Standard awarding it 4 stars. The Times states “the stand-out is Byrne’s discombobulated electro-punk take on Gabriel’s 1980 single,” and The Independent praises “Bon Iver’s ‘Come Talk to Me,’ a calm blend of guitar, banjo and synth pad that develops a moving emotional momentum.” The Sun asserts; “one of the most jaw-dropping efforts is Lou Reed’s take on ‘Solsbury Hill.’ Gone is the twinkling, airy melody of the original, replaced by a menacing, sparse, grungy arrangement.” The 12-song album will be available digitally and physically as a single disc CD plus a digi-pack double disc CD which also features Scratch My Back.

Peter Gabriel first came to international prominence with the success of Genesis, a band that he co-founded while still at school. Since leaving Genesis in 1975, Gabriel launched a successful Grammy Award-winning solo career, contributed to acclaimed film soundtracks for “Birdy,” “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Rabbit Proof Fence” as well as releasing live and compilation albums. Gabriel is also known for the creation of the now global WOMAD festival and curation of the 25-year old label Real World Records.

Peter Gabriel is set to join The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame and will be inducted in April 2014. Chosen by more than 700 voters (artists, historians and music industry professionals) of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, the 2014 honorees will also receive an exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland in conjunction with the ceremony. Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first recording. This year (for only the second time) fans were able to participate in the selection process and 1.4 million votes were cast. The awards ceremony will take place on April 10 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and is open to the public and tickets will go on sale in January and a TV special will be aired on HBO in May. On hearing the news today Peter said “Because this is recognition for all your work, it means a lot more to me than an award for a single or an album. It’s also great to get some acknowledgement from your peers. I’m looking forward to coming in April.” Alongside Peter other artists inducted included Hall and Oates, KISS and Nirvana.

Gabriel co-founded the human rights organization Witness.org in 1989, and more recently founded Elders.org alongside Sir Richard Branson, which was launched by Nelson Mandela. In 2006 Gabriel was awarded the prestigious Man of Peace title by The Nobel Peace Laureates. He has also engaged in a wide variety of tech-based businesses throughout a variety of creative industries.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees announced

Hall & Oates in August 2013. Photo: Kelly A. Swift
Anyone who has been reading my Rock 'n' Roll Truth blog or catching episodes of Music Worth Buying over the past few years knows my (mostly negative) thoughts surrounding the process of putting a wide range of deserving artists into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Rolling Stone has leaked the list of Class of 2014 nominees and for once I can't fully argue much with the list since it does actually focus on significant rock- and pop-rock artists who have earned a spot. It's a no brain-er that Nirvana, Kiss and Peter Gabriel will make the cut, but I'm also hopeful that Hall & Oates will finally (deservedly) be inducted too when the ceremony is staged at a ceremony in New York City in April 2014. Just for the record, I am not a voter and never have been.

The Zombies last month in Santa Ana. Photo: Kelly A. Swift
I am not as optimistic about the Zombies getting in even while I count the British band as one of the most deserving on the list (call me crazy, but I would rather listen to the Zombies' artful blend of jazz-tinged melodic and psychedelic rock day of the week over Kiss and Nirvana). In fact, the band's recent concert here in Orange County was one of the best shows I've caught this year. The fact that the packed crowd was comprised of mostly twentysomethings was also proof positive of the band's continuing influence.

One of my all-time favorite hard rock/heavy metal outfits, Deep Purple, is also on the ballot. Sadly, I fear they won't get selected. Just a few days ago, I spent an afternoon watching the newly-released DVD Perfect Strangers Live (released yesterday). Filmed in 1984, it's amazing how powerful and influential the English outfit was, thanks in large part to singer Ian Gillan's amazing vocals and Ritchie Blackmore's stunning guitar work.

I am as interested as all of you as to see who will get the nod.

I just read Los Angeles Times music writer Randall Roberts' piece posted today, where he handicaps the nominees and it's worth a look.

Better yet, Orange County Register writer Ben Wener has written an outstanding overview and I agree with many of his key points (please note only Orange County Register subscribers can get behind the site's pay wall).

Here are some highlights from Ben Wener posted last night (Oct. 15, 2013) on his Soundcheck blog:
"Who is most likely to get in?
Well, one thing is for certain: Dave Grohl, one of the modern era's most beloved rockers, is about to become a Hall of Famer, alongside Krist Novoselic and the late Kurt Cobain, whose path to this pantheon was clear even before he killed himself. The induction ceremony should coincide with the 20th anniversary of his shotgun suicide.
Hall & Oates, the best-selling duo of all time, has been overlooked even as a nominee for more than a decade; voters hopefully will make up for that slight by ushering them in.
Gabriel seems a strong possibility, considering his role (akin to Paul Simon's) in bringing world beat to pop prominence, plus his body of work is arguably more respected than that of Genesis. He would be the 18th artist twice inducted, not counting Eric Clapton, who has been celebrated three times, with the Yardbirds and Cream and as a solo act.
Let's not forget, however, how long it can take some icons to get inducted on their own. Eleven years passed before Paul McCartney was so honored, following the Beatles automatic enshrinement in 1988. Yet Lou Reed, installed with the Velvet Underground in 1996, has yet to make a ballot for the rest of his life's work.
The Hall of Fame has a love/hate relationship with Kiss, and vice verse – but now that Rush finally got its due, anything is possible. Chic may get a pity push this time, while Ronstadt, certainly a deserving choice, may garner extra sympathy given her recent announcement that Parkinson's disease has left her unable to sing.
She's sure to come in ahead of Cat Stevens and the Zombies and the Replacements, the latter a college-rock critics' darlings who are meritous but also lucky to be included. The rap acts have a 50/50 shot at best, I think, considering their competition this time. Paul Butterfield and the Meters are wild cards, significant acts whose long-range influence has nonetheless been limited compared to others in this mix.
Among the many other eligible but absent names are Whitney Houston, Cheap Trick, Todd Rundgren, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pixies, the B-52's, Barry White, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Dire Straits, Dick Dale, Duran Duran, Iron Maiden, Harry Nilsson, Journey, Joy Division, Love, the Monkees, New York Dolls, Roxy Music, the Smiths, Sonic Youth and Steve Miller Band."
