Little Feat's Highwire Act in St. Louis and Mark Farner's Rock 'N' Roll Soul: Live 1989 as well as the Blood Brothers' new concert recordings are available now.

Artist:
Little Feat
Title: Little Feat: Highwire Act in St. Louis (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: The Zac Brown Band, Traffic, the Grateful Dead
Tell me more: Originally released on DVD in 2004, Little Feat: Highwire Act in St. Louis has just been reissued as a wonderful Blu-ray+2CD collection (the concert is also available on digital video as well). The 2003 concert performance captured Little Feat in top form with the American band delivering 17 tracks blending rock, blues, soul, folk and Americana over 134 wonderful minutes. The line-up was among the ensemble's best, with Paul Barrere (guitars, vocals), Bill Payne (keyboard, vocals), Sam Clayton (percussion, vocals), Kenny Gradney (bass), Richie Hayward (drums, vocals), Fred Tackett (guitar, mandolin, trumpet) and Shaun Murphy (vocals, percussion) locked in and collectively showcasing their outstanding talents across the set. Highlights span the length of the concert, including the jazzy-rock opener "Time Loves a Hero," '70s-flavored rocker "Day Or Night," aptly-titled "Cajun Girl" bolstered by Tackett's inspired mandolin work, gorgeous Americana original "Willin'," and soulful "I'd Be Lyin'," the latter featuring Murphy's powerhouse soprano. Additionally, there are plenty of extended instrumental jams across the wonderful track listing that showcase the players' impressive musical chops to be sure. The Blu-ray Disc features a bonus 11-minute documentary titled "Little Feat Close Up In St. Louis" which features the band members discussing the colorful history and evolution of the group. Artist:
Mark Farner
Title: Rock 'N' Roll Soul: Live 1989 (Liberation Hall)
You might like if you enjoy: Grand Funk Railroad, Randy Bachman, Blood, Sweat and Tears
Tell me more: The "1989 Woodstock Revisited" Festival was staged at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, CA in August 1989 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Woodstock. Among the celebrated classic rock favorites to perform at the event were Mark FarnerEdgar Winter, Humble Pie, Canned Heat, Melanie, and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Now Farner's complete set from that event has been issued on both audio CD and DVD. Farner  founding member, lead singer and guitarist for Michigan's Grand Funk Railroad  delivered a powerful 15-song set backed by guitarist Arnie Vilches, bassist Lawrence Buckner, keyboardist Mike Blair and drummer Mike Maple. The set list is a mix of Grand Funk Railroad's beloved hits and Farner's strong solo material. Farner is an energetic and riveting frontman who shines on the mix of material; he even trades in his electric guitar to play electronic keyboards on several cuts ("Footstompin' Music" and "Mean Mistreater"). Farner and company immerse the crowd in blues on "Judgement Day Blues," which features the notable guitar work of Farner and Vilches. The soulful "Some Kind of Wonderful" features Buckner and Farner sharing lead vocals. Other highlights of the set include the tuneful sing-along "Bad Time," ambitious "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home," riff rocker "Heartbreaker" and festive closer "The Loco-Motion." Artist:
 Blood Brothers
Title: Blood Brothers  Live in Canada (Gulf Coast Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Walter Trout, Tommy Castro, Joe Bonamassa
Tell me more: Fans of scorching electric blues will want to run out and pick up a copy of Blood Brothers  Live in Canada. The ensemble featuring Mike Zito (vocals, guitar) and Albert Castiglia (vocals, guitar) delivers a fiery performance across the 12-track live recording that was captured at Blue Frog Studios in British Columbia, Canada on May 19 and 20, 2023. The blistering blues-rock opener "Hey Sweet Mama," dazzling cover of Tinsley Ellis' "Tooth and Nail," rootsy "In My Soul," and poignant countrified blues nugget "A Thousand Heartaches" are early standouts. Just as luring are the Chicago blues-styled Zito original "No Good Woman," slide guitar-adorned take on John Hiatt's "My Business" and tender "Gone To Texas." Closing out the concert CD is an explosive reading of Neil Young's especially timely "Rocking' in the Free World." The other band members heard this night (bassist Doug Byrkit, drummer-percussionist Matt Johnson, drummer-percussionist Ephraim Lowell and keyboardist Lewis Stephens) contribute mightily to the performance. Tell me more: Duran Duran's Halloween-themed album Danse Macabre may immerse itself in the dark and spooky trappings of the holiday but is thankfully not bound but them. Indeed, Danse Macabre is a decidedly fun listen that finds the pioneering British quartet
— singer Simon Le Bon, bassist John Taylor, drummer Roger Taylor and keyboardist Nick Rhodes  offering up a winning mix of brand new originals, creatively reworked covers of songs by Talking HeadsThe Rolling StonesBillie Eilish and The Specials and even new versions of past Duran Duran classics. What's more, the concept album includes a celebrated parade of musical guests including producer/guitarist/composer Nile RodgersMåneskin singer Victoria De Angelis and former Duran Duran members Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo

Among the terrific cuts on Danse Macabre are the unsettling opener "Nightboat," a shimmering bass-heavy grooving version of Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" featuring guest vocals from De Angelis, the gothic dance title track, instantly-accessible funk foray "Black Moonlight," playful "Ghost Town," a fiery run through Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Spellbound" and a propulsive take on The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black." The 13-track album closes with the luxuriously beautiful "Confession In The Afterlife."

'Hackney Diamonds' shines as bright as Rolling Stones' extraordinary legacy

Artist: The Rolling Stones

Title: Hackney Diamonds (Geffen Records)

Tell me more: More than 60 years into their sensational run, The Rolling Stones have returned with a true masterwork. Hackney Diamonds is an ambitious album that finds Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood delivering a masterful celebration of their signature sound infused with enough contemporary sonics to surprise across the 12-song set.

With drummer Steve Jordan playing drum across the majority of the album tracks in the place of the late drummer Charlie Watts (the latter who passed away in August 2021 at the age of 80), an all-star cast of greats add their respective talents with a collective focus on the songs. Producer Andrew Watt's role is likely another major element in the ambition and success of the album, the British band's first new full-length disc of new material since 2005's A Bigger Bang.

Indeed, the stellar production heard across the album is equaled by the strength and diversity of the song craft as well as the inspired performances of the players. And Jagger sounds outstanding across the title delivering vocals that are strong and stirring.

Hackney Diamonds' lead single "Angry" is among the album's more signature rockers, with Jagger's emotional appeal for forgiveness delivered against an uptempo beat and sharp guitar work from Richards and Wood.

But it are the album's deep cuts and the diversity of material that make Hackney Diamonds a genuinely magnificent gem.

None of the dozen selections on the album is a throw away. The band can be heard revisiting past glories with a decidedly fresh approach while also frequently expanding its musical palette.

"Get Close" is anchored by some sizzling guitar work. A melodic chorus and top-tier sax playing bolster the song. "Depending On You" is a beautiful country-tinged ballad. With its gorgeous arrangement, the semi-acoustic song is deeply affecting.

One of the biggest surprises on the album is the aptly-titled "Bite My Head Off," a true punk rock foray featuring Paul McCartney on bass. Listening to the edgy cut is to be reminded of the ferocity of the Sex Pistols. No mere curiosity, the punk rock-edged track hits home.

Among other standouts on Hackney Diamonds are the country blues nugget "Dreamy Skies," the bewitching blues rocker "Live By The Sword" (the latter featuring the late Watts, former Stones bassist Bill Wyman and pianist Elton John) and the amazing gospel-meets-soul track "Sweet Sounds Of Heaven" featuring guests Lady Gaga (vocals) and Stevie Wonder (keyboards).

Richards is featured on lead vocals on the luxurious track "Tell Me Straight," anchored by some particularly lovely guitar work.

My favorite track is "Whole Wide World," a song that somehow blends the best of 1980s alternative rock with the Stones' timeless approach. The guitars are razor sharp and the explosive chorus is pure ear candy. Jagger's lyrics are especially poignant:

When the whole wide world is against you
And you’re standin’ in the rain
When all you friends have left you down and treat you with disdain
When the whole wide world’s against you
And life’s got you on the run
And you think the party’s over
But it’s only just begun

The album's final track," Rolling Stone Blues," is a winning traditional acoustic blues cover of Muddy Waters' 1950 classic "Rolling Stone" (the song that is said to have inspired the band's name). A wonderful track to bring The Rolling Stones' singular journey full circle.

New Music: Nils Lofgren, The Flashcubes, Lucinda Williams

Revered artists Nils Lofgren, The Flashcubes and Lucinda Williams are back with the some of most important albums of their illustrious careers.

Artist: Nils Lofgren
Title: Mountains (Cattle Track Road Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young, David Crosby, Nils Lofgren
Tell me more: While Nils Lofgren is best known for his long-time role as a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street BandNeil Young's enduring Crazy Horse as well as his role as one the early members of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band, his exceptional talents as a solo artist shine just as bright across his wonderful new album Mountains. Lofgren's otherworldly skills as singer, songwriter and guitar master are displayed via a far-flung track listing that includes him performing originals amidst blues, rock, soul and Americana soundscapes. Lofgren addresses a troubled world, as well as the magical grasp of love and deep human connections on the decidedly personal album. The cast of musical greats who contribute to Mountains' might is also notable; Ringo Starr provides his singular skills behind the drum kit on the winning opener "Ain't the Truth Enough," while he adds vocals on the transcendent "Angel Blues." The beautiful ballad "Back in Your Arms" is bolstered by wonderful backing vocals from the Howard Gospel Choir; Lofgren's signature vocals are particularly poignant here. The bluesy tribute to the late Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts ("Won't Cry No More") is heartfelt and bewitching, Lofgren's voice blending magically with Cindy Mizelle's soprano and his own artful fret work. The countrified ballad "Nothin's Easy (For Amy)" is bolstered by guest Neil Young whose vocals blend powerfully with Lofgren's own. The late David Crosby — who passed away in January 2023 — adds his vocals on the buoyant and genre-defying "I Remember Her Name." Information: nilslofgren.com.

Artist: The Flashcubes
Title: Pop Masters (Big Stir Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Shoes, The Pale Brothers, Big Star, Raspberries, Sparks
Tell me more: Syracuse, New York-based Power Pop Hall Of Fame outfit The Flashcubes are back with the aptly-titled Pop Masters (due Aug. 11 via audio CD and all streaming services courtesy of Big Stir Records). The quartet — whose 1977-1980 lineup is intact and features guitarists Paul Armstrong and Arty Lenin, bassist Gary Frenay and drummer Tommy Allen — released only two singles during their original run ("Christi Girl" and "Wait Til Next Week"). The band reunited in the 1990s and earned a growing following thanks to the release of new recordings and acclaim for their live performances. Fast forward to 2023 and Pop Masters fully rewards power pop lovers with a dozen great cuts; indeed the collection gathers a wide range of singles that have received airplay on the likes of "Little Steven's Underground Garage," WFMU, KXLU, and more. Standouts on Pop Masters include a rousing cover of the Pezband's tuneful rocker "Baby It's Cold Outside" with the song's original writer and singer Mimi Betinis sharing lead vocals, a sophisticated take on Pilot's 1977 track "Get Up And Go," a powerful musical reading of Shoes' "Tomorrow Night," and infectious takes on the Paley Brothers' "Come Out And Play" and Motors' "Forget About You." Late disc highlights include a euphoric take on Dwight Twilley's "Alone In My Room," shimmering version of Posies' "Flavor Of The Month" and an inspired performance of Sparks' "Nothing To Do." Also essential is the version of the Eric Carmen-penned "Get The Message," a glorious track that recalls the best of '60s and '70s garage rock stylings during its rollicking run; Cyrus Erie's Randy Klawon adds guitar to the driving cover. Information: bigstirrecords.com.

Artist: Lucinda Williams
Title: Stories From A Rock n Roll Heart (Thirty Tigers)
You might like if you enjoy: Chrissie Hynde, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Ubaldini, Margo Price
Tell me more: Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart marks the first album from acclaimed Americana singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams since she suffered a debilitating stroke in November 2020, a challenging event that greatly impacted her ability to play guitar (
her principal tool used to write songs). Williams, 70, is thankfully on the mend and was terrific when I caught her enticing set at the Pure Imagination Festival in Prescott, AZ in May, and her new album Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart certifies her top-tier talents as a songwriter and singer are fully intact. Williams— who produced her 15th studio album along with Tom Overby and Ray Kennedy  co-wrote the material here with Overby, Jesse Malin and Travis Stephens. Additionally, she is joined by a slew of famed artists who provide backing vocals across the 10-track collection. The songs here often chronicle the aftermath of her stroke; just listen to the countrified confessional "Jukebox" where she sings: "These days my world seems so small / I'm a prisoner inside these four walls / Going Crazy with the sound of my own voice / Going crazy if I don't get out of this house." On "New York Comeback"  where her own terrific vocals are bolstered by the backing vocals of Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa — she genuinely conjures up the magic of returning to the stage: "Let me have the final say / One last chance to do it my way / One last shot, one last swing / One final song to sing." Among the other outstanding tracks on the disc are the joyful roots rocker "Let's Get the Band Back Together," the yearning "Last Call for the Truth," rollicking "Rock n Roll Heart," haunting "Hum's Liquor" and lovely "Where the Song Will Find Me," the latter a poignant exploration of the singer's mission to embrace her life's work of writing and recording new music. The album's closer is the defiant "Never Gonna Fade Away," where Williams promises: "I'm not gonna fade away / I'm never gonna fade away"  the song's emotional close is an invitation for discerning listeners to reflect and then hit "repeat" to plaStories from a Rock n Roll Heart again. Here is a roundup of some wonderful new titles available now.

Title:
The Rolling Stones: Unzipped
Authors: Anthony DeCurtis (introduction); Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood
Publisher:
Thames & Hudson
Format: Hardcover
Pages: 288
Artwork: 370 color illustrations
Tell me more: With The Rolling Stones currently in the final month of their "No Filter Tour"  which wraps up at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida on Nov. 23  now is the perfect time to celebrate the legendary band's six-decade career by delving into "The Rolling Stones: Unzipped." This just-published hardcover edition is loaded with historical photos, artwork, rock and roll memorabilia and recent interviews with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and the late Charlie Watts (who passed away on Aug. 24, 2021 at the age of 80) along with luminaries such as bluesman Buddy Guy, producer Don Was and film director Martin Scorsese whose insights collectively add depth to every page of this book. Author-music critic Anthony DeCurtis presents an informative and compelling introduction that illuminates the reader about why The Rolling Stones were so crucial in the early history of rock music and why the British band's importance extends far beyond their influential music to culture, fashion, film and beyond. It's no secret that The Rolling Stones are widely recognized as the "greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world." "The Rolling Stones: Unzipped" makes a pretty compelling case why that's true. Artist:
Jónsi
Title: Obsidian (Jónsi)
You might like if you enjoy: Jónsi, Sigur Rós, Dead Can Dance
Tell me more: Leave it to Sigur Rós singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jónsi to surprise the world with the gift of new music on Oct. 29. Without advance fanfare or notice, the artist's third solo album Obsidian dropped to coincide with his art installation of the same name (which is running through Dec. 17, 2021 at the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in New York). The exhibition was inspired by the recent eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano in his native Iceland. Obsidian, according to a media release, "centers on the Icelandic natural wonder. Recorded and produced in tandem with the works on view, the parallel formats inform one another and interweave through their embodiment of volcanic energies. Over the course of 10 tracks, each with evocative titles referencing sights, textures, and aromas of the ashen terrain, Jónsi takes his listeners through narrative arcs between erupting flares.” Indeed, "Obsidian" is both mesmerizing and immersive, with Jónsi's otherworldly vocals cascading over and amidst a Neo-symphonic sonic sphere that extends just over an hour in length. The truly haunting opener "Vikur" is followed by a parade of incredible cinematic compositions; "Ambrox" is at once gorgeous and experimental while "Kvika" is bolstered by choral and sci-fi sonic elements. Other standouts on this wonderful album include the enrapturing title track, classical-centered "Öskufall" and sweeping marathon-length closer "Hedione." Information: Jonsi.com

Artist:
The War on Drugs
Title: I Don't Live Here Anymore (Atlantic Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young, Band of Horses, The War on Drugs
Tell me more: The War on Drugs are one of the most original and talented American rock bands to emerge in the 21st century. On the Adam Granduciel-led Philadelphia-spawned troupe's new album I Don't Live Here Anymore the soaring guitar sonics that elevate the group's introspective songcraft and expansive soundscapes are thankfully intact. Co-produced by Granduciel and Shawn Everett, the War on Drugs' fifth full-length album and first since 2017's brilliant A Deeper Understanding  which won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards  provides an even more nuanced approach for listeners to celebrate. On the anthemic "I Don't Live Here Anymore" (bolstered by indie pop Lucius' luxurious vocals), quiet "Living Proof," buoyant "Harmonia's Dream," daring "I Don't Wanna Wait," melodic "Wasted" and shimmering "Change" and "Occasional Rain" collectively display the astonishing range of Granduciel (lead vocals, lead guitar), David Hartley (bass guitar), Robbie Bennett (keyboards), Charlie Hall (drums), Jon Natchez (saxophone, keyboards) and Anthony LaMarca (guitar). Information: TheWarOnDrugs.net.

Artist:
Ian Jones
Title: Evergreens (Thin Silver Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Peter Case, Michael Ubaldini, Bob Dylan
Tell me more: The release of singer-songwriter Ian Jones' new The Evergreens EP confirms the arrival of a terrific talent. The six songs on The Evergreens showcase an artist blessed with top-flight abilities as a lead vocalist, compelling songwriter and a musician with a genuine knack for blending the best of Americana, roots and heartland stylings into his signature sound. Following up on his 2019 release Results Not Typical, Jones understands that important themes and lyrical tales work best when embedded in memorable songcraft; that is clear across a track listing that never falters. My favorites include the lovely countrified opener "Evergreens" that explores the courage of those who leave for home in pursuit of their dreams, the Dylan-worthy "Liars, Criminals, Beggars and Thieves" (a well-aimed view of politicians), the poignant "Hallelujah" and infectious "Promised Land." The outstanding EP was produced by Jessie Siebenberg (Supertramp, Lucas Nelson and Promise of the Real). Information: ianjonesmusic.com.

Rediscovered Recordings Resound In 2021

A diverse range of wonderful rediscovered recordings are highlighted this week...

Collectors will want to pick up the deluxe edition box set of Neil Young & Crazy Horse's 'Way Down In The Rust Bucket,' which chronicles a legendary 1990 concert event. It retails for $99.98 on the New Young Archives website.

Artist:
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Title: Way Down In The Rust Bucket (Reprise)
You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Tell me more: Clocking in at three hours or so, Neil Young & Crazy Horse's marathon performance across Way Down In The Rust Bucket is truly a stunning showcase for the quartet's power in the service of Young's stellar songcraft. The legendary performance at a small club (The Catalystin Santa Cruz, CA on Nov. 13, 1990 celebrated the release of the outstanding Ragged Glory album issued two months before; the entire event was filmed and recorded by Shakey Picture’s LA Johnson. Performing three sets, Young and company unleashed the first-time ever live versions of a slew of Ragged Glory cuts along with an evocative "Danger Bird," the latter a favorite off the 1970 album Zuma. The countrified rocker "Country Home," moody 14-minute "Love to Burn," soaring "Cinnamon Girl" and otherworldly "Over and Over Again" are early standouts. Late concert highlights include the harmonies-adorned "Don't Cry No Tears," fiery "Sedan Delivery," genuinely explosive "Like a Hurricane" and stirring concert-ending "Cortez the Killer." Way Down In The Rust Bucket was released on February 26, 2021 as a 4 LP vinyl box set, a 2 CD set and a deluxe edition box set containing a DVD of the concert, plus 4 vinyl LPs and 2 CDs. At a later date a stand-alone DVD will also be released at NYA  Young’s Archive website. Information: neilyoungarchives.com.

Artist:
Todd Rundgren
Titles: A Wizard, A True Star...Live! (Cleopatra Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Todd Rundgren, The Who, Emitt Rhodes, Paul Stanley's Soul Station
Tell me more: Released on colorful rainbow swirl vinyl on March 5, Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star...Live! is a 2009 concert recording revisiting the artist's groundbreaking genre-bashing 1973 album A Wizard, A True Star! in its entirety. A Wizard, A True Star...Live! was issued on crystal clear DVD and audio CD last year, but the 2LP vinyl release is sure to please fans of the famed musician/producer/singer-songwriter who enjoy collectible vinyl titles. The 2LPs come packaged in a beautiful gatefold jacket featuring images from Rundgren's multi-media concert event captured in Akron, Ohio. The inspired recording shines throughout; the psychedelic-tinged opener "International Feel," wistful "Never Never Land," melodic "You Don't Have To Camp Around," neo-classical "Flamingo," ambitious "Zen Archer" and soulful "Sometimes I Don't Know What To Feel" are surefire standouts on the first LP. The second LP continues the parade of great offerings courtesy of a stellar soul medley, the melancholic trip "I Don't Want To Tie You Down," intoxicating rocker "Is It My Name?" and enthralling closer "Just One Victory." Rundgren's fourth studio album A Wizard, A True Star! mostly ignored the commercial-aimed songwriting found on his previous 1971 effort Something/Anything? and instead frequently focused on heavy experimentation. The results on the original studio set, as well as this terrific live version of the classic are glorious. Information: CleopatraRecords.com.

Artist:
Hasaan Ibn Ali
Title: Metaphysics: The Lost Atlantic Album (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Elmo Hope
Tell me more: Los Angeles-based Omnivore Recordings continues to champion rare and rediscovered recordings. Look (and listen!) no further than Metaphysics: The Lost Atlantic Album, a never-before-issued 1965 recording featuring jazz pianist Hasaan Ibn Ali. The story of the recording is almost as amazing as the dazzling jazzscape that plays out via the talents of virtuoso keyboardist Ali, tenor saxophonist Odean Pope, bassist Art Davis and drummer Kalil Madi. Prior to the release of Metaphysics on March 5, Ali was seemingly destined to be known only for The Max Roach Trio Featuring the Legendary Hasaan, a 1964 recording that lifted the Philadelphia-based Ali out of obscurity.  Indeed, when Atlantic invited Ali to record again in August and September of 1965, the subsequent step in mixing the sessions was halted because of a narcotics possession that resulted in Ali's incarceration. Thirteen years later, the master tape was destroyed in an Atlantic Records warehouse in Long Branch, N.J. Fast forward to 2018 and the discovery of a tape copy of the long-lost reference acetates of the 1965 sessions; listening to the work of Grammy Award-winning engineer Michael Graves on the restored Metaphysics is to be immersed in the astonishing playing of Ali (who sadly died in 1981). Ali's original compositions are beautiful even while challenging the listener at every turn. Detailed liner notes shed additional light on Ali as well as the other musicians who accompany him on this magical rediscovery. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Artist:
Richard Pryor
Titles: Richard Pryor; 'Craps' (After Hours) (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy
Tell me more: The widely-acknowledged #1 stand-up comic of all time, Richard Pryor kept audiences laughing on stage and screen in a career spanning from the early '60s to his death at the age of 65 in late 2005. Now Omnivore Recordings has released restored and expanded editions of the late artist's first two albums. Richard Pryor (originally released in 1968) and 'Craps' (After Hours) (first issued in 1971) showcase the Peoria, Illinois native early in his career and reveal how brilliant his style remains more than 50 years later. His style of comedy is halarious and decidedly edgy whether eliciting laughing attacks from club goers with tales of black superheroes, impressing girls, life in prison, religion and race or sex, drug use and a comedic take on all things in life with his ability to play multiple characters  all delivered with rapid-fire improvisational precision. Richard Pryor was recorded live at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, with a second disc featuring 21 tracks recorded at several different comedy clubs that were included in the out-of-print Evolution/Revolution: The Early Years (1966-1974)

The second Pryor release, 'Craps' (After Hours)' shows a slightly more polished Pryor, his comedy as keyed up as ever. The detailed liner notes on this collection are particularly helpful in understanding how Pryor "evolved from 19670s nighlub comedian to being the voice of his generation." Larry Karaszewski continues: "The performances capture the moment where Richard Pryor stopped being polite. Where he took off his suit and tie and gloves. Where Pryor began to reflect what was happening in the streets and in the counterculture." Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

We discuss the 'Abbey Road' 5.1 Blu-ray mix track-by-track

Check out Robert Kinsler and TJR's discussion of the 5.1 mix featured on the Blu-ray disc of The Beatles' 50th Anniversary edition of Abbey Road:

Sunday, September 29, 2019

The Beatles' 'Abbey Road' is celebrated with essential 50th Anniversary edition

When it comes to rock and popular music, there are The Beatles and then there is everyone else. A newly-expanded deluxe edition of the Fab Four's final studio album Abbey Road is a stunning reminder of the timeless magic created by the creative collaboration between John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and famed producer/"5th Beatle" George Martin throughout the 1960s.

Artist: The Beatles
Title: Abbey Road - 50th Anniversary Edition (Capitol)
You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Badfinger
Tell me more: Fifty years after its original release in the United Kingdom on September 26, 1969, The Beatles' final album Abbey Road has been released as an essential Deluxe Anniversary Edition complete with new stereo, 5.1 surround and Dolby Atmos mixes. The four-disc version includes 40 essential tracks  featured on three audio CD discs and a Blu-ray disc. After getting the new edition on the day of its release, this writer immediately immersed himself in the new stereo and 5.1 surround mixes; cheers to both 2019 mix producer Giles Martin (the son of the original album's producer George Martin) and 2019 mix engineer Sam Okell for retaining the original character of the album while somehow finding a way to bring out the distinctive vocals and musical nuances of each classic song without thrusting the remastered release into "the loudness war" that has ruined a parade of recordings in recent years.

There are a slew of wonderful previously-unheard tracks; in particular, fans of George Harrison will love the intimate home demo of "Something," a freewheeling early take of his "Old Brown Shoe" and an animated alternate version of "Here Comes The Sun."

So many of the tracks include playful bits of banter of The Beatles in the studio, often working out the songs and providing insight into their creative process and signature personalities. Listeners will hear the band on early and alternate tracks of many of their final creations, including alternative cuts of "Come Together," "Her Majesty," Maxwell's Silver Hammer" "Sun King," "Octopus's Garden" and "The End." Great stuff.

The edition's packaging is a worthy follow-up to the deluxe edition of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band released in May 2017 and the six-disc Super Deluxe edition of The White Album released in November 2018. Housed in a slip-sleeved 12-inch by 12-inch 100-page fully-illustrated hardbound book, "Abbey Road" includes a foreword penned by Sir Paul McCartney, images of handwritten lyrics, previously-unseen photos (many taken by Linda McCartney) and in-depth notes capturing the period that gave rise to the album.

Listening to Abbey Road anew is to realize that The Beatles' final hour found the group as great as ever.

Masters Showcased on New Sets

Four outstanding titles deserving of widespread attention are available now, including a look back at some notable Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies, the latest studio album from Sir Paul McCartney, a live Yes set and wonderful collection featuring Bay Area favorites Malo.

Title: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Concert: Encore (Time Life)
You might like if you enjoy: Heart, Rush, Gary Clark Jr., Tom Petty, Donovan
Tell me more: Available on both Blu-ray and DVD, "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Concert: Encore" features the complete 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 induction ceremonies for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The good news for fans of pop, rock, soul and blues is there is a wide range of great performances and interesting speeches that make for solid viewing. Among this writer's favorite performances (there are 44 performances featured across the title!) is the Hollies performing "Bus Stop," a wonderful tribute to the late Freddie King featured the combined talents of Joe Bonamassa, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Derek Trucks, a powerful set from Rush, and an inspired take on Randy Newman's "I Love L.A." featuring the singer-songwriter-composer joined by Jackson Browne, John Fogerty and Tom Petty. Other artists who appear as part of wonderful performances include modern-day blues great Gary Clark Jr., icon Bruce Springsteen and classic rockers Heart. On the Blu-ray edition reviewed here, the visual and audio quality are truly marvelous. Information: TimeLife.com.

Artist: Paul McCartney
Title: Egypt Station (Capitol Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Paul McCartney, Jason Falkner, Rusty Anderson
Tell me more: When it comes to classic '60s-spawned rock artists who have continued to release albums of new music there are always those who have little or no interest in listening regardless of how strong the material. The Zombies, Neil Young, Ringo Starr and Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues have all impressed on recently-issued titles. Add to that distinguished list Sir Paul McCartney courtesy of his terrific Egypt Station. At 76, McCartney's once shining vocal tenor is admittedly more scratchy on his 18th solo album (25th if you count Wings), but he uses that huskiness to help propel a batch of winning songs exploring everything from lust-filled romance ("Come On To Me," the Ryan Tedder co-penned "Fuh You") and attack on bullying (the infectious blues rocker "Who Cares") to the search for peace in our time ("People Want Peace"). There are several songs that rate with some of McCartney's best-ever post-Beatles songs, notably the beautiful and confessional piano ballad "I Don't Know," introspective Beatlesque-mining "Happy With You," Bossa nova foray "Back in Brazil" and reflective melodic gem "Dominoes." "Egypt Station" ends its glorious run with a glorious rock medley ("Hunt You Down/Naked/C-Link") that captures McCartney's rare ability to fuse tuneful song craft, bona fide rock 'n' roll and artful ambition with singular magic. Artist: Yes featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman
Title: 50th Anniversary Live at the Apollo (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: Yes, Rick Wakeman, Trevor Rabin
Tell me more: The good news for those who didn't catch Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin and Rick Wakeman on their 2016-2017 tour celebrating the music of Yes is that a sold-out performance staged at the Manchester Apollo in the United Kingdom in early 2017 was captured and is now available. 50th Anniversary Live at the Apollo was released on Sept. 7 and is available on DVD, Blu-ray, 2CD and 3LP. The performance featuring Anderson (vocals), Rabin (guitar) Wakeman (keyboards), Lee Pomeroy (bass) and Lou Molino III (drums) truly provides an astonishing look and listen at many Yes favorites. Nuggets are pulled from across the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group's 50-year legacy; "Owner of a Lonely Heart" bristles with power; "Roundabout" is slightly reworked from its 1971 studio arrangement but maintains its bewitching ethereal wonder. "I've Seen All Good People" is bolstered by a sweeping British folk spirit in its first half before more rock elements and vocal harmonies elevate it during the song's grand finale. Indeed the entire concert recording is a joy and celebrates Yes' groundbreaking prog rock sound. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Malo
Title: Latin Bugaloo (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Tower of Power, War, Santana
Tell me more: Along with groups such as Tower of Power and War, Malo carved out an intoxicating sound by mixing rock, funk, blues, Afro-Latin and jazz adorned with a brass section. Now the ensemble's enduring sound is showcased on Latin Bugaloo: The Warner Bros. Singles. Featuring all 14 A- and B-sides from the Bay Area-based band's four albums released by Warner Bros. Records in the early 1970s, the remastered cuts here sound amazing and showcase the approach of the troupe, led by bandleader Jorge Santana (the brother of Carlos Santana). Malo was able to creatively use the large mix of instruments including keyboards, congas and bongos in the service of jams that supported strong songs. "Latin Bugaloo" features the radio single versions of songs that sometimes stretched much longer on the albums. Among the highlights featured on the outstanding set is the band's best known hit, the breezy "Suavecito," the jazz-flavored "Nena," richly-textured "Just Say Goodbye," pretty ballad "Love Will Survive" and funky "Think About Love.".
