Vintage Singer Sewing Machine.

On our Sunday walk through Astoria, Brenda, Kara, and myself made a pit stop to drop off some unwanted stuff at the local Goodwill. While making the drop Brenda noticed this beauty being dropped off by the man in front of her. After he left she opened the case to find a mint condition Singer Featherweight from the 1960's. With her game face on she asked the man behind the counter if it was for sale. He asked if she just wanted the case and she said that she would also take the sewing machine. In his laziness he told her to take it because he did not want to tag it.

Brenda ended up walking away with a nearly-mint condition sewing machine that goes at auction for as much as $600 for free. That is a good Sunday visit to the thrift store and what a beautiful machine it is.

It came compete with a bunch of bobbins, all of the original manuals, paperwork and even the receipts from Macys!

The artwork of Nick Morris.

Today I received an e mail from Australian artist Nick Morris in reference to my artwork. He directed me to his website of his personal work and I am instantly a fan. Morris' work is a collage of icons of Americas' past. He uses screenprint, collaged paper ephemera, painting, and resin to create solid compositions that take me back in time.

In Morris' CV he states that his work is a culmination of lots of beer, muscle cars, Playboy magazines, soap opera-type romance, football and a few tough guys. TV was also a big influence with the likes of the Bionic Man, Planet of the Apes and the Brady Bunch being indelibly etched in my mind. It was not just the images themselves but the feelings associated with those images.

I think that he has nailed it perfectly and I hope to see his work in person someday!

You can see more of his work here and here.

Jane Maxwell art opening at Caldwell Snyder in San Francisco.

On March 5, 2009 Jane Maxwell will have an art opening of her new work at Caldwell Snyder Gallery in San Francisco. Jane and I used to show together at Hubert Gallery in New York and have a mutual admiration for each others work.

Jane's work uses layers of vintage fruit crate labels collaged with encaustic and paint on panel. Her subject is the female form and her concept deals with the female self body image and the feminine ideal in our culture.

Jane's use of the female form has hints of the Vargas girls of the 1940's. I especially love her tongue in cheek use of type in the fruit labels to make reference to women's body parts.

You can see more of Jane's work here and here.
