In the NEWS: The chocolate that won’t make you fat

Here's new research that will make EVERYONE happy!

The chocolate that won’t make you fat

January 11, 201

By adding linseed and chilli to dark chocolate, researchers can raise your metabolism so you can eat chocolate without putting on weight.

Imagine a bar of chocolate that tastes good, is filling – and which raises your body’s metabolism, so you can eat the chocolate without putting on weight.

This may sound too good to be true, but it is precisely what researchers at the University of Copenhagen have in their melting pot.
“It would be good if ordinary people could use this chocolate as part of their normal eating diet and actually eat less,” says Arne Astrup, a doctor of medical science and the head of the university’s Department of Human Nutrition, who led the development of the new chocolate. Together with his colleagues, Astrup focuses on appetite, energy metabolism and preventing and treating obesity. RESEARCH: Slow eating reduces food intake

We all could use to lose a little weight, and especially when you're over 30, the pounds seem to keep adding on. I (Rob) found this piece of research and it makes sense on a couple of levels. The key to slower eating is taking breaks- talk, read a book, etc. 2) It prevents you from putting MORE food in your mouth.  3) Drinking water makes you feel full, so drink up.
Learn from this article- it's worth reading! - and lose those pounds! Rob

Researcher provides further evidence that slow eating reduces food intake
Kingston RI (SPX) Nov 15, 2011 - Two new studies by researchers at the University of Rhode Island are providing additional insights into the role that eating rate plays in the amount of food one consumes. The studies found that men eat significantly faster than women, heavier people eat faster than slimmer people, and refined grains are consumed faster than whole grains, among other findings.

"It takes time for your body to process fullness signals," she concluded, "so slower eating may allow time for fullness to register in the brain before you've eaten too much."  FULL STORY: http://www.seeddaily.com/reports/Researcher_provides_further_evidence_that_slow_eating_reduces_food_intake_999.html

What You Need to Know About the Egg Recall

What You Need to Know About the Egg Recall
Posted by Commissioner Margaret Hamburg on August 26, 2010 at 11:11 AM EDT
In recent weeks, an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis has sickened hundreds of people across the country and has led to a recall of shell eggs. FDA, CDC and state colleagues have worked hard to review reports of illness, to link these illnesses to eggs, and to trace these eggs to the farms involved.
We have had a team of investigators on two farms in Iowa investigating the problem, and ensuring that contaminated eggs are not shipped. The FDA is monitoring the recall, including conducting audit checks at retail stores, wholesalers, and distributors to make sure the recalled shell eggs are being removed from the market.
To avoid the possibility of foodborne illness, it’s always the case that consumers need to handle eggs safely. That means they need to keep them refrigerated, wash their hands before and after handling, and cook the yolk and egg white thoroughly. It’s also important to wash cooking utensils and food preparation surfaces after handling eggs.
Consumers should go to FoodSafety.gov to check for the list of recalled eggs and to get related egg safety information, including details on how to handle and prepare eggs safely.
Eggs tainted with salmonella look, smell, and taste normal. If you have any question as to whether the eggs in your refrigerator are among those that have been recalled, please either discard them or take them back to the store. Check foodsafety.gov for updates on the recall and tips on what you can do to reduce your risk of salmonella from eggs.

A Stitch in Time / Dunkin' Donuts Waffle Sandwich

I have 2 things to blog about today that relate to the mouth. One: a stitch, Two: a fantastic sandwich.
"A STITCH IN TIME:" Dental troubles continue to plague me (Rob). The stitches in gum came loose on Monday, causing intense pain every time I swallowed, so it was back to the dentist on Tuesday. SIGH. The dentist re-stitched it (UGH) after putting a topical anesthetic to numb it. I told the dentist she needs to have CHOCOLATE flavored anesthetic! She said that if they did, everyone in the office would have numb mouths from eating it! Anyway, my TMJ starting killing me again for re-opening my mouth, and I've got the searing headaches again. ***REPLAY- The 2nd set of stitches came loose today (Wednesday), so I have to go back again on Thursday. I have 2 older root canals behind that missing tooth area that are actually throbbing, so the dentist told me they may ALSO have to come out! This is a dental nightmare and this is my 9th day of Ibuprofen every 4-6 hours. Eeesh. Now better things...
DUNKIN' DONUTS WAFFLE BREAKFAST SANDWICH - Yup, I'm sure you want to read this after the stuff above... but, tonight, Tom and I each enjoyed the BEST breakfast sandwich ever at Dunkin' Donuts. The new Waffle/egg/sausage breakfast sandwich! Try it!

Savannah: Part Eight: Disappointed in Pink

This is the final entry about Savannah, and it's about a dinner that we were really looking forward to, in the very expensive and historic "Olde Pink House."
Some background on why the Pink House is special: Savannah's Olde Pink House was so named for the beautiful shade of "pink" stucco, which covers its old brick. This Georgian mansion was built in 1789 for James Habersham Jr., one of Savannah's most important early cotton factors and founding-family members.
OUR EXPERIENCE: I've read on-line many good experiences at the Pink House. Unfortunately, ours wasn't one of them. We called the restaurant at 9am and learned the only reservations available were 5pm and 9:30pm- so we took the 5pm slot. It was exciting to me to eat in a haunted restaurant.
We arrived in plenty of time for our 5PM sitting. We informed the hostess of our presence, and after a few moments, we were taken upstairs, through several other dinner parlors into the upstairs dining room in the new addition to restaurant completed just last year.
Along the way, there were a lot of wait staff hanging out in the hallways and on the stairs for some reason. Our waiter came over, greeted us, and took our drink orders. Upon his return he asked if we were ready to order. We were never informed of the specials (so we thought there were none), but we heard him tell the adjacent table about them after we had already ordered. Maybe he forgot, although there were not many in the restaurant at the time.
Gary ordered a fish entree that he said was so poorly prepared and the accompanying sauce was so bland that he didn't eat more than 1/8th of it.
I ordered the 4 small burgers well-done, but they were served rare with a dark outside. I sent them back to the kitchen and they came back STILL RARE. I didn't eat more than 1 1/2, and later was sick that night and the next day.
The waiter didn't come back more than once - but only to get the dessert order which only Jeff had. Jeff and Tom said their dinners were good.
When the bill came for the four of us, (3 had a glass of wine each and only one had a dessert) it was $190. Pricey I would say - and not worth it for the money (or for Gary's fish entree, and my beef burgers that made me ill for the next 24 hours).
We were very, very disappointed and thought it was NOT worth the price we paid (and the anticipation of going there.
For potential travelers to Savannah, we would not recommend the Olde Pink House.

Tummy troubles and movies

Sunday we ate at Five Guys restaurant and had some of their great hamburgers, but have noticed (now twice) that their french fries have made us very sick. We went there with two friends after seeing their new-old home in Gaithersburg. Needless to say, we drove home quickly, and Rob was sick all afternoon/evening. Tom didn't get it this time fortunately... but last week, Tom had either severe food poisoning or a stomach flu, as he was sick for one week! -
Sunday evening we were supposed to meet Tom's mom at the movies to see "Beverly Hills Chihuauhua" - I told Tom to go, and he did. He said the movie was okay. Meanwhile, I stayed home with the dogs (near the facilities) and watched Spiderman 2 on DVD, with interruptions of course. Ugh.
