CBC Short Story Prize- Deadline Nov. 1, 2014



WHAT: Submit your original, unpublished stories between 1200 and 1500 words.
WHEN: Submission period is open from September 1, 2014 to November 1, 2014
WHO: All Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada
HOW: Submit online by clicking the "submit" link below or download the submission form to submit by mail.
A fee of $25.00 (taxes included) for administration purposes is required for each entry.

WHAT YOU COULD WIN:
1) You could win a $6, 000 grand prize
 ($1, 000 for up to 4 runners- up, courtesy of the Canada Council of the Arts)

2) Publication in Air Canada's enRoute Magazine and on CBCBooks.ca 

3) A 10-day writing residency at the Banff Centre

2014 Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize- Deadline Aug. 1, 2014



The Malahat Review, Canada’s premier literary magazine, invites entries from Canadian, American, and overseas authors for its Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize. One award of $1,000 CAD is given.

The Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize is awarded to the best work submitted to the magazine’s annual contest for a genre that embraces, but is not limited to, the personal essay, memoir, narrative nonfiction, social commentary, travel writing, historical accounts, and biography, all enhanced by such elements as description, dramatic scenes, dialogue, and characterization. 

Entries may be sent by regular mail or email.


New this year: Pay only $15 for each additional entry after the first.

The deadline for the 2014 Creative Nonfiction Prize is August 1, 2014 (postmark date).

Guidelines:
The entry must be between 2,000 and 3,000 words. Only indicate title and word count on the first page (no names or addresses). Please double space your work.

No restrictions as to subject matter or approach apply. For example, the entry may be personal essay, memoir, cultural criticism, nature writing, or literary journalism. (Read our Creative Nonfiction mandate here; read the Creative Nonfiction Collective's definition of creative nonfiction here.)

12th Annual Lush Triumphant Literary Awards Now Open for Entries!


Our Annual Lush Triumphant Literary Awards competition is now open for submissions.

FICTION MAXIMUM 3,000 WORDS (no specific theme, we simply want to be amazed!)

POETRY A SUITE OF 5 RELATED POEMS (MAXIMUM 15 PAGES)

CREATIVE NON-FICTION (Based on fact, adorned w/fiction) MAXIMUM 4,000 WORDS

ENTRY FEE: $27.50 PER ENTRY. You may send a cheque or money order along with your submission (cheque/money order made payable to subTerrain Magazine) or submit your entry and payment online at the link below.

You may submit as many entries in as many categories as you like!

The winning entries in each category will receive a $750 cash prize (plus payment for publication) and will be published in our Winter issue. First runner-up in each category will receive a $250 cash prize and be published in our Spring issue of the following year.

All entries MUST be previously unpublished material and not currently under consideration in any other contest or competition. Entries will NOT be returned (so keep a copy for yourself). Results of the competition are posted here in the fall, prior to publication in our Winter issue.

Short Fiction Writing Contest- Deadline May 28, 2014



The Peter Hinchcliffe Fiction Award, sponsored by the St. Jerome's University English Department. 

Winning story: $1000

This contest, is named in honour of Peter Hinchcliffe, who was instrumental in the founding of the magazine and has made an impact in the lives of many students in his longstanding role as lecturer at St. Jerome’s University. 

The $1000 top prize will be awarded for a work of short fiction by a Canadian (citizen or resident) writer who has not yet published a first novel or short story collection.  Though there is only one top prize, all submissions will be considered for paid publication ($250) in the magazine. All submissions will be judged blind.

Entry fee: $40 per submission. Each submission includes a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly

Eligiblity: Submissions must be previously unpublished. Entrants must be Canadian or currently residing in Canada. Writers must be in the early stages. We define a writer in the early stages as someone who has not yet published a first story collection or novel.

There is no word limit. Entrants anonymity will be carefully preserved throughout the judging process; please ensure that your name does not appear on your document. Decisions will be made by August 31; finalists will be notified by email.

Contest details:

Genre: Creative Non-Fiction.

Rules

5,000 word limit on entries.
No previously published material, or material accepted for publication elsewhere, either in print or online.
No simultaneous submissions.
Do not identify yourself on the entry. Include a separate cover sheet with name, address, phone number / email, and title(s).
Multiple entries are allowed; however, each entry must be accompanied by its own $34.95 entry fee.
If already subscribed to EVENT, you will receive a one-year extension.
Entries will not be returned.
If entrants wish feedback and commentary on manuscripts, please check out our Reading Service for Writers.
Preliminary judging is done by the Editor and editorial assistants at EVENT.
Douglas College students, employees and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter. Douglas College students may enter two years after completing courses.
Entries must be postmarked or submitted online by April 15.
Contest results are posted on our website and through social media in August. The winning entries and judge’s essay are published in the December issue of EVENT.

Personal Essay Contest- Deadline March 28, 2014




Do you like to write? Here's your chance to win money for doing something you enjoy!

The New Quarterly Magazine (TNQ) is once again holding the Edna Staebler Personal Essay Contest and $1 000 is awarded for the winning essay.

Essays can be of any length, on any topic, in which the writer's personal engagement with the topic provides the frame or through-line. There is no restriction on essay length or subject matter, but the author must be a Canadian citizen or resident.

The TNQ is offering a $1,000 prize for the winning essay; all submissions will be considered for paid publication ($250) in the magazine.

Entry fee: $40 per submission. Each submission includes a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly

Eligiblity: Entrants must be Canadian or currently residing in Canada. Entries may not be previously published, accepted, or submitted for publication elsewhere. There are no restrictions on length or number of entries, so long as the appropriate fees are paid. Entrants anonymity will be carefully preserved throughout the judging process. If names used in your essay may reveal your identity, please use pseudonoms and make a note so we know to ask for the real names before publication. The decisions will by made by August 31; winner(s) and finalists will receive notification by email.
