Free Poetry Workshops

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month?

Established in Canada in 1998, National Poetry Month strives to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry and the important role it plays in our culture.

Poetry is celebrated in Wood Buffalo through the annual Words in Motion program. Residents of all ages- whether they are a student, a professional writer, or a novice wordsmith- are encouraged to submit their poetry. You can learn more about Words in Motion at www.rmwb.ca/wordsinmotion

The deadline to submit your poetry is February 3, 2017. Once the program closes, an external panel of judges will select the poems to be displayed in Wood Buffalo Transit buses and on the Municipal website. Authors of the selected poems will be invited to participate in a celebration event at the Wood Buffalo Regional Library in April.

To help get your creative juices flowing, Dr. Ryan Cox of Keyano College will be facilitating two poetry workshops on January 10th (for adults) and January 18th (for ages 13-18) at the Wood Buffalo Regional Library. Attendance is free of charge! Be sure to register your spot here.

Happy Writing!

FREE Lecture about the Cold War at Keyano College

What are you supposed to do when you see the flash? Duck and Cover! For forty-five years, humanity lived in fear of the atomic bomb. Civilians were bombarded by propaganda telling them to be afraid and protect themselves from the Red Menace that could happen any moment. How did people become so afraid and how did the messages of fear change over time?

Come back in time to when children cowered under their desks, when families built bomb shelters in their years and the missiles could fly at any time.

Reel Performances: TIFF Film Circuit

Fort McMurray Tourism and Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre Present:
Reel Performances: TIFF Film Circuit

Thursday, September 25- 7 pm Keyano Recital Theatre

The Grand Seduction charts the lengths to which the community will go to enchant a visitor from the city. Like many affected by the collapse of the fishing industry, residents of this once-thriving village are driven to seek employment in the city or, worse, queue for government assistance. The future looks brighter, briefly, when a plastics company proposes building a factory in the village—until the villagers learn that they need to secure a full-time doctor to serve the community’s needs, which is easier said than done. Enter Dr. Christopher Lewis (Taylor Kitsch; television’s Friday Night Lights, The Bang Bang Club), a young, cosmopolitan plastic surgeon banished to the physician-starved seaside due to a previous misdeed. In a hilarious attempt to charm him—without revealing their plan—the villagers take up the doctor’s beloved cricket and fall over themselves trying to persuade him that he has come to the most fascinating, desirable place in the world.

Gentle, whimsical and poignantly funny, The Grand Seduction is brought to life through tremendous performances from Ireland’s Brendan Gleeson (Albert Nobbs, Gangs of New York) and Newfoundland-born Canadian icon Gordon Pinsent (Away From Her, Saint Ralph). Shot on location in Trinity Bay, the film marvelously captures the colour and vibrancy of Newfoundland’s coastal landscape, and is certain to delight even the saltiest cynic.

The Secret Garden Art Exhibit & Sale will be open in the Keyano Art Gallery during all performances of Les Misérables
Feb 13-15 • 12pm–11pm
Feb 18-23 • 12pm–11pm

The Artist
Jonathan Havelock is a self-taught photographer who first started exhibiting in 2009.  The unique look of his work is the result of countless hours of creative effort in the field and at his studio.  His goal is to create a two-step process in the enjoyment of each image - to have the viewer first explore the medium of the piece (i.e. oil vs. photography – flat vs. texture, etc.) – and then to appreciate the piece based on its merits as a reflection of our natural world.

The Secret Garden Theme
The Secret Garden provides an intimate and unusual perspective of plants and flowers.  Subjects have been presented to accentuate contrast, light and depth – to attract and draw one into an imagined garden of beauty and colour.

His work can be viewed on his website at www.jonathanhavelock.com
