To minivan or Not to minivan!!

It is no secret for those who know me well, that I am not a fan of the minivan. Never have been and I would like to say I never will be. But a tragic thing happened this week. Rhett and I were discussing what kind of vehicle we would like to get someday when we have child number three ( this is not a hint in anyway). I have always thought I would like a Tahoe, Yukon, Expedition, pretty much anything but a minivan. When I think minivan I think frumpy mom vehicle! As I expressed my views to my wonderful husband he decided to play devils advocate and tell me all the reasons we need to get a minivan and most of those reasons were money related. While I couldn't disagree with him on the money issues my argument, i felt, stood strong; they are ugly and I don't want to drive one! Plain and simple. Unfortunately I couldn't leave well enough alone. I decided to get on line and find out for myself how much money we would really be saving by purchasing a frumpy minivan verses a lovely SUV. I was shocked at the results I found! Not only could we buy a brand new van for the same price or less than a used SUV but the difference in gas mileage was sadly something to cry about. Why? I am still asking myself this question? I was blissfully ignorant and now I am horribly educated! The reality is, now I can't seem to justify the purchase of an SUV when I know what kind of money I would be saving driving, yes that's right, a frumpy minivan. I have always been a very logical person and now that quality is biting me in the rear, Hard! So, my request to all my wonderful friends out there. In the future if you see me driving a minivan can you all just pretend it's a beautiful Tahoe or Yukon or Expedition, anything but a minivan. Also if it wouldn't be to much to ask, just remind me how cool my minivan is (even though it's not) and maybe just once tell me how totally awesome I look driving it (even though I won't)! Thank you! Your great friends!

I'll be frumpy with you... actually I already am. We are the proud owners of a Honda Odyessy. I was anti mini van, but succumbed to the dollars and cents debate. Julie- I love it! We have and SUV that was the family car before we bought the mini van and I LOVE that my kids can get themselves in and out!!! In our SUV I always had to lift them and get my jeans dirty from there shoes or I'd inevitably bash someone's head on the ceiling or the door would close on my huge ol' rear. The minivan is great. Get automatic doors. They're a life saver.

Haven't you seen the commercials about how the mini van is coming back? You and me baby!!! Bringin back the party wagon!!

Julie! Your so funny. I have to admit, I am anti-mivivan. I am driving on of those gas eating, enviroment distroying SUV's. And I love it. But I am seriously considering trading to a mivi van. I would save soooo much on gas. So I will tell you how cool you look driving. Let's face- you look cool no matter what you drive!

Oh my gosh you are soooo funny! I love it! I feel the same way about minivans, and you know it makes you mad because as much as you can harp on them about how ugly they are, they really do get alot better gas mileage than the SUVs! And to be honest, some of the new ones really aren't THAT bad looking? :)

Thats pretty funny. I have to be honest with you. I have HATED mini vans for as long as I can remember but, we have drove them off the lot ocouple of times on some of our vacations and I LOVE them. They are so nice to travel in because you can just climb back there with the kids if you need to, there is so much room for all of the stuff you have to take with you and the kids can get in by themselves. I keep telling beau that I could probably drive one and he still says no but to be honest I actually like them. wow did I just admit that!! :0)

Oh, how super embarressing! Just kidding...you're not alone! In fact, I think most of my friends with more than two kids are in minivans as well! There's lots of benefits and I don't think it will hurt your coolness factor at all.

You sound just like me and my husband! I not a minivan fan either and he likes to play devils advocate too saying we're getting one someday. It gets me so angry! I'm totally the SUV type too, but honesly it's so much smarter as far as finances go. And like Carrie was saying, it's great that the kids can get themselves in and out. There are so many pros and cons of minivans vs SUVs. What it comes down to is what's best for you and your family and not what others think! I'll probably someday sucumb to the minivan world, but we haven't even had one kid yet so it's the least of my worries...now. Have you looked at hybrid SUVs? They're probably expensive but think of the gas money you would save! Just a thought!

That is hilarious. I loved it. Yeah I haven't really looked into it but I am sure I will have to come to grips with the same revelation that you have found. I for sure will tell you how hot you look in your mini van!

Oh my gosh, you crack me up!!! I honestly don't know if you COULD be any cooler!!! You'd look gorgeous behind a cardboard box, so yeah, it'll be okay. We'll gladly tell you that you're the ONE person in the world bringing back THE MINIVAN. Or why stop there? Go all the way for a 15 passenger van. Heck, maybe they'll have mastered a more 'gas friendly' SUV by the time Zito #3 comes along. Either way, thanks for the heads up on your next vehicular purchase. =) I love reading your blog!
