Air Conditioner Update

Air conditioner repairman today

After a sweltering morning, the air conditioner service man came by after lunch. He checked out why our air conditioning system wasn't cooling off the house. First he found the circuit breaker switch was off. I should have checked that but missed it because of the circuit breaker problem we had with the washing machine.

Then is did a regular maintenance routine and found the problem, "evap, TXV bad", has to "hot order" a new part. Translated that means our brand new HVAC system which I had (and paid over $10,000 for) installed in 2015 has a bad part.  What?  First it was our original HVAC system, which was builder grade, totally cheap, failed us. The whole twenty-five years we lived in Pennsylvania we never had ONE problem with our HVAC system.

The good news is the part is covered by my warranty. The bad news is my warranty doesn't cover labor or Freon. That will cost me $1,150.05.  And just when I thought I was getting ahead.

But you know folks, I'm glad we have a reserve fund that we can afford this repair. I can't imagine going through the summer without air conditioning. And to think I went through my whole childhood with air conditioning.

Glad you're getting it fixed. Heat and humidity are awful, and dangerous for many older folks. We're having a heat wave right now, and we don't have any air conditioning. Fortunately our humidity levels don't get very high, so the heat is almost bearable, especially in short bursts. Stay hydrated!

I'm glad your air conditioner is being fixed at the beginning of summer, Ron. It never fails to amaze me how air conditioners always "act up" during the hottest time of the year. I had one that stopped working in San Angelo, Texas when it was 110 degrees!

I also had two furnaces (in two different houses)that broke down during the coldest part of winter.

Like you, when I'm tempted to bitch about the high electric bills for running (or in your case, repairing) my central air, I just have to stop and be grateful I have the funds to pay for it. Carol, a reader in Philly (not that far from your old residence).

Walt,
I can take the heat (I don't like it) but I can't take the humidity. More than once I was working outside and almost became overcome with the combination of heat and humidity. One time I almost didn't make it back in the house, I almost passed out. My body doesn't regulate temperatures like it used to. And believe me, I do stay hydrated. Lots of water for sure!

Jon,
Isn't that interesting how air conditioners fail during the hottest time of the year. Our old air conditioner, same thing happened. Thank goodness Service Today (which is actually "service today") came by within an hour and fixed it. Of course I eventually had to put out over $10,000 for a new HVAC system which is the one I have now. It's only four years old and now this problem?

Carol,
You are so right, thank goodness I have the funds to pay for the repair. As I've often said, most of my problems are "first world problems." No comparison to what many others are going through just to survive, especially those seeking entry into our country at our southern border with Mexico. It broke my heart to see that photo of the father with his two year old daughter who drowned trying to cross the Rio Grande River to enter our country after being denied at the normal port of entry.

Thank you for mentioning the deaths of the father and daughter in the Rio Grande. Remember them by voting sanely.

I have ac and humidity problems. There is no amount of money that could induce me to no have ac. I cannot stand the heat like I could when I was younger.

Practical Parsimony,
Same here, I couldn't stand to live if I didn't have air conditioning. My body doesn't regulate temperatures like it used to when I was young. This morning, which isn't that humid and only 72 degrees, I thought I would lay some mulch. I could only do two wheelbarrows until I had to come in. I could feel my body's system overheating. The only way I can lay that mulch is a little at a time interpreted with visits back to our air conditioned house.

Anonymous,
It is so terrible what is happening at our southern border with those trying to immigrate to our country. This isn't America. And that photo of the father with his daughter will stay with me the rest of my life.
