Best and Worst Movie Remakes

Alex J. Cavanaugh, Stephen Tremp, Livia Peterson and Al Diaz are hosting the Best and Worst Movie Remakes blogfest. Find the list of everyone participating here.

I had to put some serious thought into this. Lately I haven't had time to watch a lot of movies so I had to pull from my memories and try to come up with something. One that came to mind right away for not great remake was The Parent Trap.

Now, I'm not saying it was horrible or anything, Lindsey Lohan was even kind of cute way back then, but it simply does not compete with the original.

And it makes me sad to think that so many young people will see that one and never see Haley Mills singing and dancing with herself in the original.

Or the mom, seriously, the mom was so much better in the original. :)

My husband thought I should pick Dawn of the Dead as the best remake ever. He has watched that one over and over. And while it was good, blood and guts are not really my thing.

What I picked is technically a remake of a TV show, not a movie, but I think it should still count. Get Smart.

Steve Carell is always hilarious and he did not let me down as Maxwell Smart. I love Anne Hathaway as well and it was fun to see her in a grown-up role. (I know she's done tons since then, but that was the first time I saw her in a non-kid movie.)

Get Smart was funny and fun, and a movie my husband and I both enjoyed. (That doesn't happen often.) :)

Okay, and I heard there were bonus points for a song remake. :) I'm sure there are better ones out there, but I've been really enjoying this one lately. :)

Thanks Alex, Stephen, Livia, and Al! This was fun and I'm looking forward to reading everyone's posts. :)

  1. I agree, the original Parent Trap is superior, not to mention a classic, but I still enjoyed the remake when it came out. It'd probably be weird watching it now, though, knowing what Lindsey Lohan has been up to since then...heh.

  2. I loved the original Parent Trap too. I think when a movie is done so well, it's best to leave it alone.

  3. The Parent Trap has been on several lists this morning. Lohan was a cute kid back then. Now she's a wreck of a drunk.
Thanks for participating in our blogfest!

  4. Steve Carell was the best choice for the Get Smart character-- he pulled it off perfectly and was a hoot in the process.

  5. Oh man do I love Steve Carell. Especially in Crazy, Stupid, Love. I can watch that movie over and over. It is so brilliant. Not a huge Ann fan, but despite her, I liked the Get Smart remake too.

Poor Lindsay Lohan. When I see that cover, I remember the cute, sweet, formerly innocent little girl that I blame Hollywood (and bad parenting) for ruining. So sad.

  10. I vaguely remember seeing the Parent Trap when I was a kid, and it seemed fine so I would've left it alone. And Dawn of the Dead -- ewww. Maybe it's excellent, but I don't like blood and guts either.

  11. It was until today that I learned The Parent Trap was a remake. Didn't see the original but enjoyed Disney's version very much. Thanks for participating!

  12. GET SMART was a lot of fun, but Carell's best work is DAN IN REAL LIFE. I haven't seen him do anything better (yet).

  13. Wow. Never would have thought of Get Smart. Forgot about it but I agree with your assumption!

    Great fest.

Going to find that song now.

  14. A couple people picked Parent Trap today. I think it was both a best and a worst. I agree that the original was way better. But the mention of Lindsay Lohan made me think of another remake - Freaky Friday. I love the remake on this one, mostly because of Jamie Lee Curtis. She was hysterical.

  15. Get Smart was really funny with Steve Carrel. Never say the original Parent Trap but love the remake. Thanks for sharing your choices Rachel.

  17. I've seen the original Parent Trap, but introduced my kids to the remake. I actually liked it better (hangs head).

  18. I was a kid when the remake of The Parent Trap came out so since it's my childhood I do like it a little bit more than the original. But that was quite good too. :)

Three remakes I've hated were Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. They were terrible. The original slasher films were so much better.

One remake I did actually enjoy was Fright Night. I didn't think it was that bad, especially the cameo of the original Jerry Dandridge. ^^

  19. I haven't seen any of these I don't think, though the Lindsay Lohan Parent Trap does ring some bells. I'm familiar with the Parent Trap story though so must've seen the original as a kid or something :)

  20. The original Parent Trap was excellent and it starred the great Maureen O'Hara. Lindsay(hiccup) Lohan is in her own Parent Trap which I believe is her Dawn of the Dead. I think she was an extra in that film and needed no make up

  21. i thought Get Smart was cute. Steve Carell was great. and i do have to agree that Haley was a better set of twins than Lindsay. and no one can out-do Maureen O'Hara.
