Famous Buddhist Quotes & Sayings

Quotes By Budha

  • Neither fire nor wind, birth nor death can erase our good deeds.

  • You only lose what you cling to.

  • Fill your mind with compassion.

  • We live in illusion and the appearance of things. There is a reality. We are that reality. When you understand this, you see that you are nothing, and being nothing, you are everything. That is all.

  • The Four Reliances
    First, rely on the spirit and meaning of the teachings, not on the words;
    Second, rely on the teachings, not on the personality of the teacher;
    Third, rely on real wisdom, not superficial interpretation;
And fourth, rely on the essence of your pure Wisdom Mind, not on judgmental perceptions.

  • We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make our world.

  • To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.

  • Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.

  • Pay no attention to the faults of others,
things done or left undone by others.
Consider only what by oneself is done or left undone.

  • What we think, we become.

  • Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned.

  • Do not overrate what you have received, nor envy others.

  • He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.

  • An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind

  • Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world.

  • Anger will never disappear so long as thoughts of resentment are cherished in the mind.

  • Anger will disappear just as soon as thoughts of resentment are forgotten.

  • Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

  • Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world.

  • On life's journey Faith is nourishment,
    Virtuous deeds are a shelter,

  • Wisdom is the light by day and Right mindfulness is the protection by night.

  • If a man lives a pure life nothing can destroy him;
If he has conquered greed nothing can limit his freedom.

  • One of his students asked Buddha, "Are you the messiah?"
    "No", answered Buddha.
    "Then are you a healer?"
    "No", Buddha replied.
"Then are you a teacher?" the student persisted.
"No, I am not a teacher."
"Then what are you?" asked the student, exasperated.
    "I am awake", Buddha replied.

"O foolish mind, do not indulge in hatred for any sacred way if you wish to enter pure Reality. With desperate longing for truth alone, the singer of this song has plunged into the ocean of ancient Scriptures, discovering at last that my blissful Mother, her black hair falling free in ecstasy, is the living power within every religious symbol, the coherent core of every philosophy. She is the warrior spirit, Kali dancing, and she is Shiva, all-transcending. She is ineffable sweetness, Radha-Krishna, the love play that dissolves conventionality. Meher Baba

"A mind that is fast is sick. A mind that is slow is sound. A mind that is still is divine."

"Love is essentially self-communicative: those who do not have it catch it from those who have it.... No amount of rites, rituals, ceremonies, worship, meditation, penance and remembrance can produce love in themselves. None of these is necessarily a sign of love. On the contrary, those who sigh loudly and weep and wail have yet to experience love. Love sets on fire the one who finds it. At the same time it seals his lips so that no smoke comes out.

"Love can attain what the intellect cannot fathom."

Dont Worry Quotes

Ramana Maharshi

"Happiness is your nature. It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside."

"Nearly all mankind is more or less unhappy because nearly all do not know the true Self. Real happiness abides in Self-knowledge alone. All else is fleeting. To know one's Self is to be blissful always."

" Bliss is not something to be got. On the other hand you are always Bliss. This desire [for Bliss] is born of the sense of incompleteness. To whom is this sense of incompleteness? Enquire. In deep sleep you were blissful. Now you are not so. What has interposed between that Bliss and this non-bliss? It is the ego. Seek its source and find you are Bliss."

"Nobody doubts that he exists, though he may doubt the existence of God. If he finds out the truth about himself and discovers his own source, this is all that is required."

"That inner Self, as the primeval Spirit, Eternal, ever effulgent, full and infinite Bliss, Single, indivisible, whole and living, Shines in everyone as the witnessing awareness. That self in its splendour, shining in the cavity of the heart This self is neither born nor dies, Neither grows nor decays, Nor does it suffer any change. When a pot is broken, the space within it is not, And similarly, when the body dies the Self in it remains eternal."

"Reality is simply the loss of ego. Destroy the ego by seeking its identity. Because the ego is no entity it will automatically vanish and reality will shine forth by itself."

"God dwells in you, as you, and you don't have to 'do' anything to be God-realized or Self-realized, it is already your true and natural state." Just drop all seeking, turn your attention inward, and sacrifice your mind to the One Self radiating in the Heart of your very being. For this to be your own presently lived experience, Self-Inquiry is the one direct and immediate way."

"Heart" is merely another name for the Supreme Spirit, because He is in all hearts. The entire Universe is condensed in the body, and the entire body in the Heart. Thus the Heart is the nucleus of the whole Universe."

"Your own Self-Realization is the greatest service you can render the world. "

Be a giver of peace

Swami Rama Tirtha on OM

"Sit still, chant ‘Om' and then think Who is within you. All the Vedanta, nay all the philosophy of the Hindus is simply an exposition of this syllable ‘Om.' ‘Om' has a charm about it, an efficiency, a virtue in it which directly brings all feelings and all thoughts into a state of harmony, brings peace and rest to the soul and puts the mind in a state where it is one with God. Science may not be able to explain this, but this is a fact which can be verified by experiment. Woe unto science if it goes against the truth connected with the efficiency of the sacred syllable ‘Om.' The real Self which is knowledge absolute and power absolute is the only stern Reality, before which the apparent reality of the world melts away! ‘Om' is the name of this Reality.

Realize it [Om] and sing it in the language of feeling, sing it with your acts, sing it through every power of your body. Let it course through your veins, let it pulsate in your bosom, let every part of your body and every drop of your blood tingle with the truth that you are…the true Self! A man who sings ‘Om' in all these ways, chants it with his lips, feels it with his heart and sings it through action, makes his life a continuous song. But if you cannot chant it with feeling nor chant it with your acts, do not give up, go on chanting it with your lips. Even that is not without use. But chanting it through feelings and actions would naturally follow if you commence humming it with the mouth.

Commenting on the depiction of Krishna playing a flute, Swami Rama Tirtha wrote: “One should bring out from the flute of the mind the sacred syllable ‘Om,' which removes all evils.

Before falling asleep, and after waking, firmly resolve to follow the Vedantic discipline. Keep chanting ‘Om.'

The literal meaning of Vedanta is the end of knowledge, the end of speech, a point where all speech, all thought stops and for the Hindus the whole of Vedanta is represented by Om.

Chant Om, Om. If you do that for a few moments, your whole being from head to foot becomes Light. Why pray for Light when Light is your own Self? You become Light immediately.” “It is this ‘I Am' that is represented by Om. The pure ‘I am,' ‘I am He,' is represented by Om.” “How to make the mind rise higher into the celestial regions–to make the soul soar away up to the throne of God! When the benign light of the rising or setting sun is falling upon the translucent lids of half-closed eyes, we begin humming the syllable Om, we sing it in the language of feeling.

There is but one reality,' this name Om, which is the Holy of Holies, this name Om possessing the highest powers of Divinity or God, should be chanted.

If [you are] distracted by worldly desires, you are not singing Om.

This Atman, this true ocean of Reality, this controlling and governing Self is to be realized, to be felt, to be seen and known in order to be one with the Infinite. This true Self or Atman is called the ‘ I am .' This true Self, the perfect ‘ I ' is beyond cause, time and space. This perfect true Self is represented by Om. Om means ‘ I am ;' and while chanting Om you have not to address yourself to somebody else. While chanting Om, think not of someone outside yourself whom you are calling. While chanting Om, you must feel your self to be one with this true ‘ I am .' By this strong feeling, the mind is merged in the Reality. By this strong belief, by this living knowledge of the mind, the mind becomes, as it were, a bubble which bursts into the mighty ocean of Reality. This is the way to Realization; this strong feeling, this living knowledge on the part of the mind laying hold of you, and dehypnotizing your false self, is the way to gain Truth, to free yourself.

Now Rama shall tell you the method which the sages of India adopted to acquire God-vision. [In] the Hindu Scriptures, it is stated that all the Vedas are like a tree which sprang from the seed known as Om. This is called the seed from which the tree of the Vedas sprang.… Those people who want to get a higher inspiration, those people who want to acquire that God-vision, who want to rise above the egoistic, personal, little, limited, local consciousness of self, they get the inspiration and light through the chant of Om! Om! Om!

Now it is not the mere chant by the throat, it is something else also. While the lips and the throat chant physically, the mind chants it intellectually, and the heart chants it in a language of higher emotions. Thus the threefold chant of this sacred syllable Om brings you to that unison and oneness with the All, the Light. This was the method they adopted.

The life in your breath is Om. The sound which is the soul of your breath is Om. This is then the most natural name for the Heaven within, the God, Supreme Spirit, that enlightens all spirits and all souls; the Soul of all souls, the Life of all lives is Om.

So Rama says that intonation is connected with the chant of Om and experience has proved that it has a marvellous effect in bringing your soul at one with the soul of the ALL. It has a marvellous effect. If Science cannot prove it today, let it grow, and a little later it will be able to explain it. In the meantime the fact will remain a fact. So on the basis of this experience of the sages, Rama means personal experiences, Rama lays before you this, the treasure of the Vedic philosophy. Thus it is that the Hindus reached the higher vision of clairvoyance, of the inner, spiritual light.

In India there is a beautiful story in the Puranas. It speaks of Krishna jumping into the river Yamuna while his father, mother, friends and relatives stood by struck dumb with amazement. In their very presence he jumped into the torrent. They thought that he was gone, that he would never rise again. The story says that he went to the bottom of the river and there was a thousand-headed dragon. Krishna began to blow his flute, he began to play the mantram OM, he began to kick down the heads of the dragon, he began to crush down the heads of the dragon one by one, but as he crushed the many heads of the dragon one by one, other heads sprang up and thus it was very hard for him. Krishna went on jumping and dancing upon the crested head of the dragon; he went on playing the mantram on his flute, he went on chanting his mantram and still jumping and crushing down the heads of the dragon. In half an hour the dragon was dead; what with the charming note of the flute and what with the crushing of the dragon by his heels, the dragon was dead. The waters of the river were turned into blood and the blood of the dragon mixed with the water of the river. All the wives of the dragon came up to pay homage to Krishna, they wanted to drink of the nectar of his sweet presence. Krishna came up from the river, the amazed relatives and friends were beside themselves, their joy knew no bounds, so happy were they to find their beloved Krishna, their beloved one in their midst again. This story has a double meaning. It is an object lesson, so to say, for those who want to gain an insight of Reality, into their own Divinity.

That lake or river represents the mind or rather the lake of the mind, and whoever wants to become Krishna (the word Krishna means or stands for Deity, God), whoever wants to regain the paradise lost, he has to enter deep into the lake of his own mind, to dive deep into himself, he has to plunge deep into his own nature. Reaching the bottom he has to fight the venomous dragon, the poisonous snake of passion, desire, the venomous dragon of the worldly mind. He has to crush it down, he has to destroy its crests, he has to kick down its many heads, he has to charm and destroy it. He must make clear the lake of his mind, he must clear his mind this way. The process is the same as that followed by Krishna. He is to take up his flute and play the mantram OM through it. He has to sing that divine, that blessed song through it. In this state of mind, in this peace of heart, with such a pure soul begin to chant the mantram OM, begin to sing the sacred syllable OM. This is putting the breath of music into the flute. Make your whole life a flute. Make your whole body a flute. Empty it of selfishness and fill it with the divine breath. Chant OM and while doing it, begin that search within the lake of your mind. Search out the poisonous snake with its many tongues. These heads, tongues and fangs of the poisonous snake are the innumerable wants, the worldly tendencies and the selfish propensities. Crush them one by one, trample them under your feet, single them out, overcome them and destroy them while singing the syllable OM.

Build up a character, make firm resolutions, make strong determinations and take solemn vows so that when you come out of the lake or river of the mind, you may not find the waters poisoned; so that the waters will not poison those who drink from them. Come out of the lake having purified it altogether. Let people differ from you, let them subject you to all sorts of difficulties, let them revile you, but despite their favors and frowns, their threats and promises, from the lake of your mind there should flow nothing but divine, infinitely pure, fresh water. Nectar should flow out of you so that it may become as impossible for you to think evil as for the pure fresh spring to poison those who drink from it. Purify the heart, sing the syllable OM, pick out all points of weakness and eradicate them. Come out victorious having formed a beautiful character. When the dragon of passion is destroyed, you will find the objects of desire worshipping you just as the wives of the dragon under the river paid homage unto Krishna after he had killed the snake.

This sacred syllable OM is the end of knowledge in all the world. It is all the Vedas, all the Kingdom of Heaven. In order to come by the Treasures within or in order that the Kingdom of Heaven may be unlocked, OM is the key to be used. This is the seed of all knowledge. OM is the reality which runs through your breath. It is present in all breath of the world, it is the most natural name of the Power which is at the back of all differences, all divisions, all separateness, the most natural name for the Reality. All Vedanta, nay, all the philosophy of the Hindus is simply an exposition of this syllable OM. OM covers the whole universe. There is not a law, not a force in the whole world, not an object in all the world which is not comprised by the syllable OM. One by one you will see that all the planes of being, all the worlds, all phases of existence are covered by this syllable A-U-M–OM. OM has a charm about it, an efficacy, a virtue in it which directly brings the mind of one who chants it under control, which directly brings all feeling and all thought in a state of harmony; brings peace and rest to the soul and puts the mind in a state where it is one with God. Science may not be able to explain this, but this is a fact which can be verified by experiment.

Meditate on Om and be a giver of peace to mankind and not an expectant seeker."

- Swami Rama Tirtha

Wisdom is intelligence

Sri Trilinga Swami

Sri Trilinga Swami of Benares, born in Andhra Desa, lived some fifty years ago. He lived for 280 years. He made his Tapas in Manasarovar, Tibet. Once Ramakrishna Paramahamsa also saw him at Benares.

From "Kundalini Yoga" by Sri Swami Sivananda

Trailinga Swami was a great devotee.

He closed his door and sat inside for three days.

One of his devotees was standing outside the door and wondered, "What's going on here ?"

He went and knocked on the door.

Trailinga Swami asked , "Who's there?"

He replied , "I am , Guruji, I am."

Trailinga Swami did not make any move at all. He sat silently in his room.

The disciple was thinking, "What happened to my Guru ? He is sitting inside. Before he was always happy to see me, and now he is not replying at all."

He sat outside and began to think, "What happened to the Guru?"

The next day he came again and knocked on the door.

Trailinga Swami said ,"Who is there?"

The disciple once again replied, "I am, Guruji."

Trailinga Swami kept silent.

All the day and all the night, the Guru did not open the door, and the disciple sat outside. The disciple sat through the whole night wondering why the Guru didn't open the door.

On the third day he went and knocked on the door. Guruji asked, "Who's there?"

The disciple replied,"You are."

And the Guru opened the door.

Pilot Baba

"Drop everything that has come from outside. Throw it out.
Suddenly you will find your mind is giving way into no-mind.
You have only to drop the rubbish.
Your body is only a temple.
Your subjectivity - is a silent , peaceful, just an empty space -
is the very source you have come from and is the very goal - are going towards.
When the source and the goal meet, you are enlightened .
The whole circle , the whole piligrimage is complete."

"One birth is given by your parents.
Another birth you have to manage by yourself.
The first birth is going to end up in death.
The second birth is the beginning of ETERNITY -
no death - no end - no beginning."

"Remember that only individuals have ever become enlightened.
Others have become a part of a crowd as a Hindu, as a Christian, as a Muslim.
Crowds never become enlightened. Only individuals.
Only those people who have guts and courage to be alone -
are capable of stopping the movement of the mind
and can settle into their inner innocence.
The deeper you go within yourself the purer the sources of consciousness that you will find.
When you reach to the very centre of your being,
you have reached to the center of the Universe.
Then blossoms wisdom, you become a sage - a Realised one ."

"Truth of life cannot be " NO ", neither can it be the ultimatel goal.
Because creation does not exist in "NO" but exists in "YES."
Because the flow of the life is in "YES."
To live with "YES" (Sanyasa) means that one is ready to dissolve into the existence,
that the dew drop is ready to drop into the ocean.
But the moment the dew drop drops into the ocean,
it also becomes the ocean.
Go beyond "NO" try to reach to the ultimate "YES."
Knowledge is quantity. Wisdom is not quantity - it is quality.
Knowledge is intellectual Wisdom is intelligence. Knowledge can be quantified -
you can measure it - B.A, M.A, Ist Div, II Div. etc.
But Wisdom cannot be quantified - there is no way to measure it, it is eternal."

Debt to the Guru

Swami Muktananda

Debt to the Guru

Question: You once said that it is impossible to ever repay the debt to the Guru. Is there no way for the disciple to repay the Guru for his divine grace?

Baba Muktananda: If you could tell me how to get free from this debt I would welcome your suggestion. Then I too would be able to free myself from this debt to my Guru, along with you.

Being fully aware that I can never repay that debt, I am honoring him here so much: I am holding arati [sacred ceremony of waving of lights] to him three times a day. I am following his teaching. Whatever I am doing is exactly what he wanted me to do.

What could a disciple possibly give to repay the debt to the Guru? We had only one thing and that was bondage, and the Guru took that away.

The Guru has awakened our inner Shakti; he has transformed our inner being and has made us like himself. How can we ever repay the Guru for this?

What do we have which could clear the debt? Nobody should think that the Guru's debt can be repaid by offering so many acres of land, which belong to the Lord in any case, or by offering him a few bundles of cloth. The Guru has transmitted his own power into us and has brought about a radical change in us.

Jnaneshwar Maharaj writes eloquently on this theme in his poetry. He says, "I am trying to find out how I can repay the debt to You, O Lord, but I have not succeeded. I could not repay this debt with anything of this world, so finally I have decided to give myself to You—the whole of myself—and I will no longer remain me.

Take my sense of separateness away from me forever so that even the question of repaying your debt may vanish from my mind." A disciple should therefore give himself to the Guru. He has nothing else by which he can repay the Guru.

- Swami Muktananda

Swami Sivananda

The Guru Disciple Relationship

Swami Sivananda once wrote that no person should think he is so great that he does not need the help and guidance of a superior person. There are so many things that the aspirant cannot see at the outset, and as he continues along the path of spiritual practice he will encounter difficulties that might otherwise overwhelm him. For these reasons the instruction and support of a guru are essential.

At the same time, it is probably not the verbal instruction from the guru that is the most important gift from him - rather it is his own life and shining example. Swami Sivananda did not spend much time giving lectures to his disciples; they all learned from him by watching the example he set. "My life is my teaching," he once said. Merely being with him, in his presence and under his protection could transform a person. One need only look at the truly great ones who Gurudev brought forth into the spiritual world: Swami Chidanandaji, Swami Krishnanandaji, Swami Venkatesanandaji, and Swami Satchidandandaji among so many others.

However, in this modern world, one must be extremely careful when choosing a guru. There are many persons who have crowned themselves "gurus" who abuse the authority of that trusted position. Until an aspirant has been able to observe a teacher over time, form a clear opinion of him and his character and trustworthiness, only then should the seeker commit himself heart and soul to that guru.

This guru-disciple bond is the most important relationship in a human life. It is in actual fact not a relationship between two human beings, but is the divine reaching out to the divine. This association is therefore not limited by time and space, but is an expression of the infinite.

Teachings of Jnanesvar

Jnaneshvar

Jnaneshvar was a great Siddha, mystic and poetic genius of Maharashtra, India who died at the age of 21 in ecstasy. His spiritual roots were in both the Nath and Bhakti traditions and listed his lineage as Shiva, Shakti, Matsyendra, Gorakhnath, Gahini and Nivritti (his elder brother). At the age of fifteen (1290) he is said to have delivered ex tempore the nine-thousand verses of his poetic commentary on the Bhagavad Gita; Jnaneshvari (Jnaneshwari) or "Goddess of Wisdom" [ also called Bhava-Artha-Dipika ("Light on the meaning of Being")]. Jnaneshvar's teaching was non-dualist, saying that the mainifest world is a "sport" (vilasa) of the Absolute; the Love of the singular Reality, and regarded bhakti (devotion), the means to liberation.

Excerpt from Jnaneshwari

[The devotee] regards the Guru as a holy place, his deity, mother, and father, and knows no other path than service to him.

It is the joy of his life to live in his Guru's house, and he loves others who serve the Guru as his own brothers.

The repetition of the Guru's name is his only prayer, and his only scripture is his Guru's words.

For him the water that touches his Guru 's feet embraces all the holy places in the three worlds.

If he should find some of the leftovers of his Guru's meal, they would be a feast far more sumptuous for him than even the bliss of samadhi.

O Arjuna, he would take a speck of the dust raised by his Guru's feet as the price with which to obtain eternal joy.

What more can I say? His devotion is boundless. Out of overpowering inspiration, I have described it in this way.

A person who has this kind of devotion and who enjoys nothing but serving the Guru is a treasure house of wisdom. Wisdom is even honored by his existence. He is a god and wisdom is his devotee.

Wisdom enters him through open doors and lives in him. It is enough to satisfy the whole world.

Jnanadeva says, My soul takes delight in serving my Guru. This is why I have explained it in such detail.

Otherwise, if I am not occupied in serving him, I am helpless even though I have hands, I am blind to worship even though I have eyes, and I am less able than a lame man to walk around the temple.

I am mute in praising his glory even though I have a voice, an idler who eats others' food. Yet in my heart I have the sincere desire to serve him.

The "King of Saints" was Jnaneshwar (1271-1293), who, while living only twenty-two years, made an indelible mark on the whole of Hindu spirituality. Before Jnaneshwar's time, the scriptures of India were in the secret language of Sanskrit and completely unavailable to the lower classes. Breaking from tradition, Jnaneshwar not only translated the central Sanskrit text, the Bhagavad Cita, into the common language of Marathi but added a magnificent commentary which expounds the complete path of yoga and spiritual practice. His commentary, the Jnaneshwari, still stands among the greatest spiritual works ever written.

It cannot be spoken of or spoken to; by no means may It be comprehended by the intellect.

Salutations to the Lord of all, who is concealed with-in the visible universe. It is He who causes this universe to appear, and it is He who causes it to vanish as well. When He is revealed, the universe disappears; when He is concealed, the universe shines forth. Yet He doesn't hide Himself, nor does He reveal Himself; He is always present before us at every moment. No matter how diverse and varied the universe appears, He remains unmoved, unchanged. And this is just as one would expect, since He is always one, without a second.

... It's that one pure Consciousness who becomes everything-from the gods above to the earth below. Objects may be regarded as high or low, but the ocean of Consciousness, ever-pure, is all that ever is. Though the shadows on the wall are ever changing, the wall itself remains steady and unmoved. Likewise, the forms of the universe take shape from Consciousness-the eternal, primordial One.

Sugar is only sugar, even though it may be made into many forms. Likewise, the ocean of Consciousness is always the same, though it becomes all the forms of the universe. Various articles of clothing are made from the same cotton cloth; likewise, the varied forms of the universe are creatively fashioned of the one Consciousness, which remains forever pure.

Whatever form appears, appears because of Him. There is nothing else here but the Self. It is the gold itself which shines in the form of a necklace or a coin; they are made of nothing but gold. In the current of the river or in the waves of the sea, there is nothing but water. Similarly, in the universe, there is nothing which exists or is brought into existence other than the Self. Though it may be smelled, or touched, or seen, there is nothing else in camphor but camphor. Likewise, no matter how He experiences Himself, the Self is all that is. Whether appearing as the seen, or perceiving as the seer, nothing else exists besides the Self.

Through Her, The absolute Void became the primal Person (Purusha); And She derived Her existence from Her Lord.

Shiva formed His beloved Himself; And without Her presence, No Person exists.

Because of Her form, God is seen in the world. Yet it was He Who created Her form of Himself.

When He embraces Her, It is His own bliss that Shiva enjoys. He is the Enjoyer of everything, But there is no enjoyment without Her.

She is His form, But Her beauty comes from Him. By their intermingling, They are together enjoying this feast.

Shiva and Shakti are the same, Like air and its motion, Or gold and its lustre.

Fragrance cannot be separated from musk, Nor heat from fire; Neither can Shakti be separated from Shiva.

If night and day were to approach the Sun, Both would disappear. In the same way, the duality of Shiva and Shakti Vanishes, when their essential unity is seen.

Since He appears because of Her, And She exists because of Her Lord, The two cannot be distinguished at all.

When He awakes, the whole house disappears, And nothing is left.

They became two for the purpose of diversity; And both are seeking each other For the purpose of becoming one.

Each is an object to the other; And both are subjects to each other. Only when together do they enjoy happiness.

The lover, out of boundless love, Has become the Beloved. Both are made of the same substance And share the same food.

Out of love for each other, they merge; And again they separate for the pleasure of being two.

When sleep comes to an end, a man returns to his senses. Now my individuality has come to an end, and I have returned to Shiva and Shakti.

Salt gives up its salty taste to become one with the ocean; I give up my individual self to become Shiva and Shakti.

When the covering is removed, the air inside a plantain tree merges with the air outside. And this is how I honor Shiva and Shakti by removing all separation and becoming one with them.

Out of Supreme love they swallow up each other But separate again for the joy of being two.

They are not completely the same but neither are they different. No one can tell exactly what they are.

How intense is their longing to be with each other. This is their greatest bliss. Never, not even in jest, Do they allow their unity to be disturbed.

They are so averse to separation That even though they have become this entire world, Never for a moment do they let a difference come between them.

They created a difference to enjoy this world. When that "difference" had one glimpse of their intimacy It could not help but merge back into the bliss of their eternal union.

They become two for the sake of a divine play, But in every moment they seek to become one again.

How can we distinguish these two from each other? He appears because of Her, And She exists because of Him.

To capture light we take hold of fire. To capture the Supreme Shiva we must take hold of Shakti.

An object has a reflection: When looking we see two images, yet there is only one thing. Likewise, this world is a reflection of the Supreme Lord. We may see two, Yet only One exists.

Out of pure emptiness She gives rise to the entire world. Everything depends on Her. Yet She exists only because of Her Lord.

Merged in unity there was nothing to do. So Shakti, the bringer of good fortune, Created this world for the sake of divine play.

She reveals Her Lord's splendor by melting Herself and becoming everything; And He glorifies Her by hiding Himself completely.

He is so mysterious and subtle, That while apparent He cannot be seen. It is by Her grace alone that He comes into being.

While He is sleeping, She gives birth to all that exists and all that does not exist. When She is sleeping, He has no form at all.

Look! He is hidden, and cannot be found without Her. For they are mirrors, each revealing the other.

She is His very form, But Her radiance comes from Him. Blending into one, they enjoy the nectar of their own union.

Shiva and Shakti are one, Like air and the wind, Like gold and its luster,

Shiva and Shakti cannot be separated. They are like musk and its fragrance, like fire and its heat.

In the light of the Sun there is no difference between day and night. In the Light of the Supreme Truth there is no difference between Shiva and Shakti.

Jnanadeva says, I honor the union of Shiva and Shakti, who devour this world of name and form like a sweet dish. All that remains is the One."

Embracing each other they merge into One, As darkness merges with the light At the breaking of dawn.

When we discover their Unity, All words and all thoughts dissolve into silence, Just as when the Universal Deluge comes, the waters of the ocean, and those of the Ganges, will merge into one.

The air and the wind will merge into the endless sky; The sun and its light will merge into the Universal Fire.

With a true vision of them, the seer and the seen merge into one. Again I honor the two who are one.

They are like an ocean of knowledge. And only those who throw themselves in can drink of their waters.

I appear separate from them just so I can honor them. But that separation is not real, it is only in name.

Gajendra Moksham

Gajendra was the king of elephants. While roaming in the jungles, the elephants were drinking water from a forest lake, when a crocodile caught hold of Gajendra's legs. The kith and kin of him realised that Gajendra is going to be no more since crocodiles are invincible in water as elephants in the terrestrial area. So they left him abandoned and started away.

For a few hours, Gajendra was trying to fight the crocodile by kicking it but the valour of the crocodile was so high that Gajendra's energy started dwindling. Most of us cry out to the God in hopeless (nis-sahaya sthiti) situations and so did Gajendra. It took a Lotus from the pond and prayed to the Lord.

No sooner did the Lord realize that the little elephant had surrendered itself to Him, relinquishing the ego and his over-self-confidence, that he started on His Garuda Vahana and equipped with Sri Sudharsana Azhwar.

Now the wind direction changed. The crocodile has to see its death and Gajendra got freed up.

Well. This is not just a story. There is a tight linking of this story to mankind. Here goes the linkage.

The human is Gajendra.
The world is the lake, where human plays with his kith and kin.
The crocodile symbolizes the Death and Difficulties that attack man.

The lesson that is being learnt from here is that nobody can liberate a human from the clutches of death. God alone answers the prayers. Hence there is also a Hindi saying 'Nirbal key bal Ram', which indicates that the God is the strenght of the weak.

Here goes the Gajendra Moksha Stuthi:

PURUSHAAYAA DIBIJAAY PARESHAAYAABHI DHEEMAHEE

Blessing of Daily Work.

Blessing of Daily Work.

Thank God every morning when you get up that you have something to do that day which must be done whether you like it or not. Being forced to work, and forced to do your best, will breed in you temperance and self-control, diligence and strength of will, cheerfulness and content, and a hundred virtues which the idle will never know.

Good I will become

Always say to yourself this one thing, “Good I will become, whatever it cost me; and in God’s goodness I trust to make me good, for I am sure He wishes to see me good more than I do myself.” And you will find that, because you have confessed in that best and most honest of ways that God is good, and have so given Him real glory, and real honour, and real praise, He will save you from the sins which torment you, and you shall never come, either in this world or the world to come, to that worst misery, the being ashamed of yourself.Lovely Thoughts for Lovely People Just Like You

Follow the wisdom provided by nature

For the one who is moderate in eating, recreation, working, sleeping, and waking, this yoga of meditation destroys all sorrow.

Bhagavad Gita 6.17

Follow the wisdom provided by nature. Everything in moderation - sunlight, water, nutrients. Too much of a good thing will topple your structure. You can't harvest what you don't sow. So plant your desires, gently nurture them, and they will be rewarded with abundance.

Honour your father with all your heart

An old man celebrated his 75th birthday and tearfully bid farewell to his family. His eldest son accompanied him in the long and arduous journey to the forest. The old man carried a knife with him and he was carefully cutting down the thorny bushes on either side of the narrow path. Finally they reached the forest and while departing, the son asked him why he was cutting the thorns on the way. The loving father replied, “It was to make your return journey safe and comfortable.”

The son was deeply moved by the tender care his father was showing to him even when he was abandoning the old father in the forest to lead a painful life in a dangerous jungle with uncertain future. The incident opened his eyes. Returning home, he talked to his friends and relatives about the desperate plight of the old people they abandoned for the sake of complying with a cruel custom. Gradually, his mission found results. The people began to think about the cruelty of their traditional ritual.

The matter was discussed in the king’s court and respecting the opinion of the majority, the king proclaimed that the custom shall not continue.

He sent his troops to bring the abandoned old men back to their homes. The citizens gladly followed the army and they could trace many old men from different parts of the dense forest. But the loving old man could not be found anywhere. At last, his son spotted parts of his clothes near a cave. He rushed to examine the clothes but they were found to be stained with blood. It was obvious that the old man had fallen prey to some wild carnivore.

The sad citizens returned to their country in silence, but enlightened in spirit.

God commanded, “Respect your father and your mother, so that you may live a long time in the land that I am giving you” {Exodus 20: 12}.

This is a commandment written by God for man. This commandment is special in that it is associated with a reward.

“Children, it is your duty to obey your parents, for this is the right thing to do. ‘Respect your father and mother’ is the first commandment that has a promise added,’ so that all may go well with you, and you may live a long time in the land” {Ephesians 6:1-3}.

“God’s curse on anyone who dishonours his father or mother” {Deuteronomy 27:16}.

“Any one who makes fun of his father or despises his mother in her old age ought to be eaten by vultures or have his eyes picked out by wild ravens” {Proverbs 30: 17}.

“Honour your father with all your heart, and never forget how your mother suffered when you were born. Remember that you owe your life to them. How can you ever repay them for all they have done for you?” {Sirach 7: 27, 28}.

Our love should not be just words and talk

St. Martin of Tours (A.D. 316-397) was born as the son of a senior military officer of the Roman army. Attracted by the Christian doctrines, he went to the church as a candidate for baptism (catechumen) at the age of ten, even against the wishes of his pagan parents. At the age of fifteen he had to join the military.
On a bitterly cold winter day, he was passing through the city gates of Amiens. He saw a scantily dressed poor beggar, shivering in the snow storm. No one cared for him. Out of compassion, Martin cut his fine military cloak into two pieces with his sword. He gave one piece to the poor man who thankfully wrapped himself with it as a shawl. Martin covered himself with the other half.
That night, Martin had a dream. Jesus appeared before him, dressed in the half-cloak which he had gifted to the beggar. Jesus showed the mantle and said to the surrounding saints and angels “Martin, as yet only a catechumen, has covered me with this cloak.”
Martin remembered the words of Jesus: “I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did this for me” {Matthew 25: 40}. He got baptized soon. He renounced the army and announced that he would be a soldier of Christ. He spent the rest of his life as a zealous missionary, preaching the word of God and suffering humiliation and punishment to uphold his faith. He lived as a monk and formed the first monastery in France. Later he was ordained as the Bishop of Tours. He led the fight against heresy. He is a patron saint of soldiers and of France. The piece of the cloak kept by him became a holy relic, known as ‘St. Martin’s cloak’.
people Before cared for everyone, especially the sick and needy and shared their assets equitably to benefit everyone {Acts 4: 32-37}.
“Suppose there are brothers or sisters who need clothes and don’t have enough to eat. What good is there in your saying to them, “God bless you! Keep warm and eat well!”- if you don’t give them the necessities of life? So it is with faith: if it is alone and includes no actions, then it is dead” {James 2: 15-17}.
St. John advises, “My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action” {1 John 3:18}. "If someone says he loves God, but hates his brother, he is a liar. For he cannot love God, whom he has not seen, if he does not love his brother, whom he has seen"{1 John 4: 20, 21}.
“Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it. Never tell your neighbour to wait until tomorrow if you can help him now” {Proverbs 3: 27}.

Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised

A person was driving his ‘Model-T’ Ford car through a remote village in USA. He stopped it to take some refreshments from a wayside restaurant. Then he tried to start the car, but failed. He tried his best but could not identify the problem or solve it. As he remained worried and stranded in a strange place, another similar car came forward and stopped near his car. An elderly man alighted from the car and smiling softly, asked the person about his problem. Hearing that the car refused to start, the stranger told him, “Let me try. I have some experience in handling this model.” He examined the car, made some quick adjustments and started it. The car roared into life. The man thanked the helper and praised his skill. Then he asked his name. The stranger told him, “My name is Henry Ford. I am familiar with every part of this car as I was closely associated with every stage of its design, development and manufacture.” The man was surprised to find that the stranger was the great Henry Ford, who founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903.
Henry Ford (1863-1947), after innovative and extensive experiments had developed the Model T car in1908 as a simple, reliable and affordable car which was within the economic reach of the average American. By developing the concept of ‘assembly line’ in motor car manufacture, Ford could increase the efficiency of manufacture and decrease the cost of production. He lowered the price of the car and revolutionized the manufacture and use of cars in USA.
In the journey of life, we may encounter a variety of problems concerned with different facets of our life such as health, education, work, relations, family and finance. We often create unnecessary tension, anxiety and worry when we try to solve the problems by ourselves. Like the car- designer in the story, we have an expert creator, who knows everything about us and our life, our requirements, weaknesses and capabilities and so is able to solve any problem associated with our life. Let us have the humility to surrender ourselves before the omnipotent God. He is the loving Lord who has a definite plan for the welfare of each of us.
It is said that the shortest distance between a problem and its solution is the distance between our knees and the floor. The one who kneels to the Lord can face any problem with confidence. When prayers go up, blessings come down. Prayer should be the ‘steering wheel’ and not the ‘spare wheel’ in the vehicle of our life. God answers ‘KNEE-MAIL’ without fail.
The Lord has said, “By my great power and strength I created the world, mankind and all the animals that live on the earth {Jeremiah 27: 5}. David praises the creator, “Lord, you have made so many things! How wisely you made them all! The earth is filled with your creatures {Psalms 104:24}.
“The Lord says…I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for” {Jeremiah 29: 11}.
“Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised!”{Matthew 5: 5}.
“Ask, and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” {Matthew 7: Luke 11: 9}.
St. Paul advises, "Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking Him with a thankful heart" {Philippians 4:6}.

Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words

A little boy was in the habit of using abusive words. His mother wanted to change his habit. She brought a hammer and a box of nails to the boy’s room and told him that she would hammer a nail to the door of his room every time he used an abusive word. The nailing continued everyday. Seeing the growing ugly sign on the freshly painted door, he gradually began to behave in a better manner. Later he stopped his bad habit altogether and proudly reported his decision to the mother. To encourage him, she told him, “Now, at the end of every day you complete without uttering even a single bad word, we will pull out one nail from the door.”

Gradually, all the nails were pulled out and the boy was delighted to display the door to his mother. Then the mother showed him the holes left in the door. She said, “Words are sharper than swords. Whenever you say an abusive word to another person, it leaves a scar in his mind and another one in your own mind like the nail-marks left in your door. It is better to avoid using bad words than repenting after repeating them.”

He understood her advice and followed it faithfully.

“Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you” {Ephesians 4:29}.

“No insults or obscene talk must ever come from your lips” {Colossians 3:8}.

St. James advises, “Every one must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry” {James 1: 19}. “Just think how large a forest can be set on fire by a tiny flame! And the tongue is like a fire” {James 3: 5, 6}.

“May my words and my thoughts be acceptable to you, O Lord, my refuge and my redeemer! {Psalms 19: 14}.

You cannot serve both God and money

A well-known multimillionaire was travelling to a distant city. On the way, he approached a hotel to spend the night. The manager of the hotel easily recognized him and greeted him most heartily. He personally led the rich man to the most luxurious suite in the hotel and instructed the staff to provide all necessary amenities to the wealthy guest. While they were busily decorating the rooms and arranging more luxuries, he called the manager and said, “Sir, I don’t need such a luxurious room for a night’s stay. I need only an ordinary room.”

The manager was surprised to hear the unexpected request of his very wealthy guest. He told him, “But, Sir, Your son visits this hotel occasionally. He asks for the most expensive suite with all available amenities. I thought you too would appreciate the facilities available here.”

The rich man replied quite politely, “Please do not compare me with him. He is the son of a very wealthy man. But I am not.”

Later he told the manager that he came from a poor family and gradually became rich by his earnest and honest efforts, minimizing his expenses. Even after he became rich, he used to follow his principles and spend money very wisely, avoiding all unnecessary luxuries in life. A substantial portion of his income was regularly set apart for charity.

As he was not born rich, he was aware of the value of money. He believed that it was a sin to spend money for luxuries when millions were suffering from constant poverty and frequent starvation. Growing rich by rightful means and hard work is not sinful. But love of money and unwillingness to help the poor and needy around us using the money we received as God’s gift, are grave sins.

“Many people have been ruined because of money, brought face to face with disaster. Money is a trap for those who are fascinated by it, a trap that every fool falls into” {Sirach 31: 6, 7}.

“Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have” {Hebrews 13:5}.

“No one can be a slave of two masters; he will hate one and love the other; he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” {Matthew 6: 24, Luke 16:13}.
