Hexagon Flowers from The Quilt Barn

We love The Quilt Barn!  Heather has been fortunate enough to attend a quilting retreat at their brick and mortar shop in Idaho.  The Quilt Barn is an awesome shop with all things quilty and sewing.  Then they also have a cute blog and offer lots of fun tutorials and other things.  Here's an awesome hexi tutorial from Tara!

Anyone remember this quilt I made last year? I used about 18 Moda Mini Charm Packs and about 4 yards of background fabric.  I had a great time making it and it was, actually, pretty easy. It just takes lots of time.
I think of this as a modern Grandmother's Garden. I didn't want to sew together the hundreds of plain spacers that go between each flower. I was sure I would lose interest. Buuuut...if I didn't have to make the spacers? Perfect

Here is how you can make a Hexie Flower Quilt. A baby quilt would be cute too, and wouldn't be as time consuming..

Hexagon (Heaven!) Quilt

Meg here.  I am beyond excited to share this quilt today!!!!!!  Eeeeek!!!

Yes I know it's Fabric Tuesday (and you can scroll through my loads of pictures to link up :)  But I'm being selfish this week and sharing my finish.

I could not wait for Briar Rose by Heather Ross to be available.  The first night Heather and I ordered enough to make everyone in our family a quilt.

Usually I hoard these fabrics, maybe it's because we got a lot...but I cut into it right away.

I bought a Hexagon ruler at Joann.  5.5" I believe.  I cut squares of fabric to that size, placed the ruler on top and trimmed the corners accordingly.  I used the awesome tutorial by Kati of from the blue chair.

I like most everything I make, and I love a lot of what I make.  I'm stuck up like that. But I LOVE this quilt.  Love.

I had this quilted by Logan in Utah at Chocolate Dipped Quilts.  A-MAZ-ING.  Seriously. I have looked it over and over and it is perfection.  Her stitches are unreal!! I have yet to see the tiniest mistake, and I know my piecing wasn't perfection so I'm not sure how she pulled it off.

It has this beautiful floral design that covers 6 hexie's and 1 in the center.  She connects each with this beautiful looping.

You can tell I've already been loving this quilt (not because it shows) because I know every square inch of it.  I threw it on my little 4 year old the other day and declared "this is my favorite quilt ever." which he promptly told me it wasn't his, he hated the fabrics and the pink and purple.  And yes, he has snuggled in it plenty since then!

I also have to say this the most snuggly quilt.  I definitely recommend the rosette minky that I got at Hobby Lobby.  On instagram someone asked Logan (who quilted this) if it was hard. She said it was not hard to  quilt, just messy!  And I've quilted a lot of other types of minky that weren't hard either.  So worth it.

You can send your next quilt to Chocolate Dipped Quilts (Logan) too!  Heather and I love sending our quilts out, whether we don't have the time or we want it to be extra special or, in my case, my machine doesn't have the capabilities I want sometimes.

Chocolate Dipped Quilts is located in Utah.  You can also mail her your quilt.  All of the pricing and details are on their site.

Thank you for indulging me.  Back to you guys!!

Fabric Tuesday #163
a couple of fun facts about Fabric Tuesday
*these can be WIPs too, you don't have to be finished!
*you can link up more than once
*you just have to use fabric ie doesn't have to be sewing or a quilt!

Sew Paint It darling hexagon quilt...

Marianne from Sew Paint It is a lovely blogger from Australia. She is a crafter, quilter, home renovator, furniture re finisher and more crafty things kind of girl. (we could be Bff's!) This entire quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted! Amazing! Be sure to visit Marianne's blog to see some more fun quilts and projects....

I made this quilt a while ago for my little girl.
It is hand pieced and hand quilted.  The fabric is Love u by Deb Strain for moda.  It was made from a jelly roll.  It was the first jelly roll I ever bought so I didn't know much about machine piecing then.  So I cut it all up and made hexagons.
I made up the design.  The pale pink dot fabric is from spotlight and I used two fat quarters of it. That was all I had and I just managed to get enough hexagons out.  I don't know where the white is from but it was in the stash.  It is ribbed and a bit too thick really as it was rather hard to sew.
The backing is ikea fabric and the binding is from delilah by tanya whelan. For the hexagons I do not have a plastic template to work from.  I used word and I drew hexagons and printed out the pages and cut them out.  I tack the fabric to them and do not use adhesive.
I also made a cushion with the same love u jelly roll.  I just did it random patchwork and quilted it by machine using a swirly freehand pattern.
I did round corners on the quilt and I love them.  It means you have to use bias binding which is a pain, but looks so cute rounded.
The chair is painted my favourite colour.

Ruby Hexagons Quilt by The Life of Riley

I'm excited to show you today's quilt! It's a gorgeous baby gift made by Rachel of The Life of Riley.  I'm excited because it is a little different than most quilts we feature, it's all hexies!  So sweet and a great baby gift.  Check out The Life of Riley, she's a great quilter as seen here on her 2010-2011 finishes and 2012 finishes but she's also a great cook!  She's got a great list of yummy recipes too!
The quilt is finished and delivered!  Welcome baby Lucy!

99 Hexes.  33 fabrics - 3 of each in the quilt top.  80 diamonds.  20 half diamonds.  8 triangles and 4 half triangles.  The hexagon fabric is from  the Ruby line by Bonnie and Camille for Moda.  The white is a white on white leaf pattern.
The hexes were pieced into rows by machine, the diamonds and triangles were pieced in by hand.  The border was done by machine.
The back is a solid piece of flannel also from the Ruby line.  Soft as butter!
I did some free motion quilting of flowers and leaves.

A picture of the label which you can read about here.

Love of Solids Wall Quilt, awesome!

Leanne from She Can Quilt is very talented, no doubt! Just check our her newest finish, Kaleidoscope Quilt, amazing!  I love looking through her posts or her flickr account, very inspiring.  And today's quilt...I love this quilt, it makes me want to go out of my comfort zone!
For the Love of Solids [a modern swap] - wall quilt - complete.

I have finished the wall quilt I am making for my secret partner in the Love of Solids [a modern swap]. It is 29.75" x 21.25". The fabric is an assortment of Kona solids, some are the organic solids, some are the regular. There are two different Essex linen or linen/cottons as well.

FTLOS - front detail

The spiral pattern was made using the Parfait Cafe tutorial here.

This quilt had several inspirations. I hope you might be reminded of the beach - logs, water, shells, sand, plant life, and also the movement at the beach.

  Beach inspiration - 2011

I think you will see some of my inspiration in these beach pictures.

FTLOS - front detail

The pixelated squares, or sun-shattered views, or whatever you might see, are made of squares that finish at 1". The boards on the deck are 5"wide to give you a bit of scale.

FTLOS - front detail

I quilted it heavily. It has not been washed, and still you get a lot of quilty puffing. You might have a glimpse of sunbaked, ocean tossed distressed wood, sand, shells, and water.

FTLOS - back

Here is the back, which is a piece of Essex Linen or maybe their linen/cotton blend, I cannot remember. I used thread from 3 different spools of hand-dyed thread from Valdani Inc. - backyard honeycomb, subtle elegance and silver foam. This thread is a dream to work with and is made from a beautiful highly mercerized long staple cotton.

FTLOS - back detail

The quilting is by machine, echoing the patterns, somewhat randomly and not perfectly, much like the distressing nature causes.

FTLOS - binding detail

The binding was interesting. I wanted the front to finish without any edges but I wanted the quilting to show on the back. I considered this tutorial by Lisa Call, combined with this tutorial by Kerry at Verykerryberry, to come up with this. The part you see on the back is about 3/4". If anyone wants a tutorial for what I did exactly, let me know. It hangs nicely with pins, I have to add some kind of hanger to the back, in case my partner is partial to using a dowel or a wire for hanging.

For the Love of Solids [a modern swap] - wall quilt - complete

I just love it - it is going to be very hard to send it away, but I have plans for another one or maybe several more, similar but different, for me. Thanks to my friend Marianne at The Quilting Edge, for encouraging me on this project, I think I have managed to really stretch and I am very happy with where it has taken me.

Little Miss Mk- big girl room!

Kelley from Littlemissmk has this darling blog here. She makes some darling fun projects. How much do you love this first photo of her little girl in her "big girl room"? Priceless! She made this darling "small quilt" here, love this idea! And this sweet post about her Grandma and a quilt she made with her, love it! Be sure to check her out, great little corner of the blogosphere.

Macy turned three and we decided to re-do her room. Her room had been very gender-neutral (ie- boy) because before she was born we decided not to find out if she was a boy or a girl. So it was time for a change. There is no denying it- Mace is very very girly. Very pro-pastels. So when I thought about making her a big girl bed quilt I wanted it to scream girl so I could always remember just how pinkalicious she was at age 3.
I used this Folksy Flannel fabric that I love. It is so so so soft. I never really sew with flannel but the few times I have I've thought "why don't I sew with this more often?..." Macy insisted that the dominant color of the quilt be pink (shocking,) so I chose brick shot cotton and I think it goes pretty well. Its woven with pink and orange threads and it has a pretty orange shimmer in the sunlight (Alton, if you are reading this I know you are rolling your eyes. Go with it. And thanks for reading my blog.:)I used this wonderful hexagon quilt-along tutorial. It is super clearly written and I was so happy to find it online- for free- what you can't find online these days...I really wanted to work in this Alice in Wonderland fabric. Its actually a robe from a fabric designer that makes PJ's as well. My girl has quite the Alice obsession. So I worked her in to be falling down the center of the quilt- down the rabbit hole I guess. When I finished the quilt I wasn't super pleased with how the pale blue Alices looked against the other bright fabrics, but such is life.I included a bit of his yellow shirt to remind her of how much he loved her.
I made a label for the quilt as well and sewed it to the back- my first label, I think. I hesitated posting it because its syrupy sweet and might make you think I'm overly sappy. And I guess I am when it comes to my girl, so I'm posting it anyway... Of course I couldn't have completed this quilt all myself. I had major help again. Lori helped me work out a few (tons) of my headaches. And then she even hand bound the quilt when I was done. Just to be kind. I know, I'm lucky.I updated her bulletin board with matchy-matchy fabric and new pictures of family and friends we love. Helps us remember them in our prayers- seeing them right above her bed. Also found a sweet Alice print and made some fun flowers from this Martha tutorial to make it feel a little more golden afternoon-ish. I go back and forth between thinking the flowers are cute and then cheesy, but they took me more time than you would think so for now I'm sticking with cute...A few days before her birthday and before I had done the big room re-do, she was talking about her favorite topic- Disney movies. I asked her "Who is your favorite, Mace?" She looked at me and without missing a beat said "Mulan, Mama." Interesting. So naturally I pretended I didn't hear her and changed the subject. This is her fake sleeping while I snapped pictures. The fake snoring was pretty comical. Goodnight, miss Mulan.
