Fabric Tuesday!

Welcome to Fabric Tuesday!
Edition 13
Where we share all things we made (or made better) with fabric!  Please join in!

This week I want to introduce you to a new sponsor.  You may have seen her cute button hanging out over there.

Fabric Shoppe

Jody runs this great shop, Fabric Shoppe on etsy.  Now let me tell you...I sought out Jody.  I saw her amazingly adorable collection of fabrics and I was hooked!  Here's what you need to know about her and her cute shop.
  1. She has a great blog, Everyday Beautiful, where she has giveaways, tutorials, a collection of other's tutorials...you name it.
  2. Through her blog you can follow her on twitter, facebook and keep updated on her shop.
  3. In her shop she carries the kind of fabric that makes my heart go pitter-patter.  She has the latest and greatest in designers and fabric lines.  Really.
  4. Most of the purchases ship on the next business day!
  5. My favorite, she has a weekly customer appreciation sale!! She sells 1 fat quarter for a DOLLAR!!  That's more than half off.  AND it's cute stuff, not leftovers.  This week it's Riley Blake's Colorful Christmas Mittens.
Want to see the darling fabric from Jody that will soon be a tutorial on this blog?

Don't you love that angry owl?  Actually I can't decide whether he's angry or bored.
Love him.  I'll call him Nigel.
This is a custom bundle including Remix and Urban Zoology fabrics by Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman.
Don't you love that rainbow stripe??
It will most definitely be my binding.

I am currently making a tutorial of a Coin Quilt with a little spin to it.
Pun intended.
Oh how I love to be nerdy with puns. :)

Pssst...come see a tutorial on Fresh Poppy Design of this cute turkey

HST Quilt Tutorial part 2

First, as we are getting ready for Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter, etc. Heather and I would like to feature quilts leading up to each holiday that are the appropriate colors, themes, feeling etc.. If you have a quilt that would fit into these category please send us an email with the link! (myquiltstory[at]gmail[dot]com) Also if you know of  a quilt that should be featured send us a link or picture and we'll get in touch with them.  Thanks!
Remember these HSTs?  I'm ready to share the rest.

I got those beautiful Joel Dewberry Modern Meadow fabric from Treasure Bay Fabrics.  Really great little etsy shop...I just went over and saw this most darling fabric, don't you think?!?

Want a sneak peek of the quilt?
Don't you love these beautiful flowers? ;)

Down to the nitty gritty.  We left off with 120 HST's.  Here is the first block you will assemble.
Remember to "square up" after each step.  Basically making sure each time you sew then you trim to make sure everything is straight and measuring correctly.
Click on the image to enlarge.
Repeat this block 6 times.

Here is a finished block in fabric.

Now, you could choose to do this block 9 times (or 12 or 16...) and would result in a beautiful square quilt.  I wanted my lap quilt to be rectangular.

Therefore, the remaining HSTs I made into "half" blocks and this is how I constructed them.

And a tip.
Your lucky day.

For those of us who have wee ones, or not a designated craft room, or don't have a design board...basically you can't leave your blocks laid out.  I use masking tap and mark the block with it's location...being careful to mark each block in the same spot (for me, top right corner).
This way every night I could stack them back up again and not feel panicked that I'd forget the order or lose all my work.
I've never left the tape on for more than 24 hours nor has it been in extreme heat/cold.  So just use caution with these beautiful quilts!

Okay do you just want to see the whole quilt top?
Oh fine :)
Refer to the picture for quilt block layout.
Piecing blocks first by row, and then sewing all rows together.
Finished quilt size 50" x 60"

I've seen this layout around and I really wanted to give it a try.  Some people have called it a geometric squares quilt...but when I hear/see "geometric" I just want to put my fingers in my ears and "la la la la".  For now I'll just call it a HST quilt.

Hope you like the layout and hope you give it a try!

See you tomorrow for another QuiltStory!

Fabric Tuesday Week 12!

Welcome to Fabric Tuesday!!
A place and a day where we share all crafty things with fabric, so please join in!

Hi everyone!  I have had a very busy crafting weekend. Every few months I take a personal quilting/crafting retreat to my folks house. They live in the mountains about 20 minutes away. They feed me well, let me watch murder shows all weekend, my mom offers her free labor on my projects, and they let me spread all my stuff all over their house. I LOVE it. (I think they do too, either that or they don't know how to tell me no.)

Please welcome our new sponsor!

Just last week I got a gorgeous pile of fat quarters in the mail from Randi of  Fresh Squeezed fabrics a super fun etsy shop! Seriously could you just die of gorgeousness?  The line is from Fig Tree, called Breakfast at Tiffany's.

So pretty!  Randi also has a super fun blog with a ton of inspiration!  Tons of projects made with all the fabric she carries in her shop. Like these cute little clutches. I want to make some so bad!

Anyhow, I make about eleventy billion HST's. Oh my word, that was alot of work. Seriously!

I plan to show you a little tutorial for this project in the next couple of weeks...

and the best news of all is Randi has already set aside an identical set of FQ's for a giveaway!  We will be setting that up in the next few weeks too, so be prepared!

 And now FABRIC TUESDAY

Let's see all the cute projects that I will then have an immense desire to make for myself!

Fabric and a Tutorial

Over the next month or so Heather and I are going to be telling you about our new sponsors as well as sharing some fabulous tutorials.  Today we're talking about Treasure Bay Fabrics!

Let me give a little spotlight and then we'll hop right into a tutorial for a HST quilt.  Melissa of Treasure Bay Fabrics has a great little etsy shop and she carries some seriously darling prints (japanese imports, Michael Miller, Alexander Henry, Freespirit, more and more and more...)  I've loved working with her, and that is an absolute must for me!  What makes her shop different?  She loves suggestions on what to carry, she takes custom listing requests and ships internationally daily.  Also Melissa has a great blog where she often has giveaways (including a recent giveaway of Riley Blake fat quarters!) and she also hosts giveaways through facebook.  Make sure to stop by and say hi :)

edited to add: finished quilt size 50" x 60"
Joel Dewberry's Modern Meadow

Would you cry if you got this in the mail?
I almost did.
PS Yes this fabric has already been cut, I couldn't wait to dig in, not even for a quick photo.
And of course, this fabric is all from Treasure Bay Fabrics.
I am so happy I went with this colorway, originally I was going to go with blues, greens, browns.
Which is fabulous.
Which is so typically me.
So happy I went with the dark blue and not brown.

Materials Needed:

* 1 1/2 yards white fabric
* 1 1/2 yards of various prints (at least 4 different prints, I have 5)
* 2 yards backing fabric
* 57" x 67" batting
* 3/4 yard fabric for binding
* sewing machine, scissors, thread, etc.

First: Cut sixty 6" squares from the white fabric and the various prints, 120 total squares.

Second: Using a white square and a printed square, make half-square triangles.  Repeat 119 times. :)
Would anyone be interested in seeing how I make my HST? Or are we all set in our own ways?  Do we all know how to make one in the first place??

Third: Make sure to square up each and every HST.
ie cut each and every one of them to be perfect 5 1/2" square
That's it for part 1!  Next Thursday we will put together all of our blocks and in no time we'll have a quilt top finished.

Please let me know if any part of this tutorial is confusing or incorrect.
Please let us know if you are making this quilt, first I'd feel really cool, second I'd call my mom and third maybe we could feature you!

I'm really excited for the layout of this quilt and can't wait to share it all with you.  I hope you'll quilt-a-long with me or at least give it a try someday.

See you tomorrow with our Friday QuiltStory.

I made a monster excell chart to make sure everyone got the right amount of entries.  Thanks to everyone who made a comment, thanks for all the blog posts, this giveaway was a huge success. And thanks to all our new followers. We think you will like it here!

Thanks so much to Sara at the super cute Ladybug Quilt Shop. Make sure to continue to stop by her shop when  you are craving some darling fabrics...

The winners of one of the fat quarter bundles from Random.org ended up being (insert drumroll)

Trisha said...I love the Hooty HOot Kangaroo line by Riley Blake. I am trying to figure out what I could make with.

andonlymehere said...Oh my gosh love the fabrics! The mint is too darn adorable. I'm going to have to hop over there on payday and get some owl prints for my daughter!

Thanks again for everyone for all the comments and support of Sara and her Ladybug quilt shop.

Now onto the Friday Quiltstory. Charity just started a new blog ahandleonit.blogspot.com , now take a moment to go over to her blog and give her some comments. You all remember starting your blog and wondering when anyone would ever comment besides your loyal mom or sister. Go on and show the love. This is a sweet story you will want to read...

On any given day I hold many different titles, wife, mother, college student, gardener, and occasionally quilter. In May of this year my college classes were coming to a close for the session. I was ready to dive into a project, when the June issue of American Patchwork and Quilting arrived. I was hooked and couldn’t help but get started. Mine looks a bit different from the cover picture, as most of my quilts are leftover pieces. I don’t know the names of the fabric or even if what I used has a name. I went with what I liked and tried to work it all together. The finished quilt measures approxamately 66” X 88”.

As the summer progressed and I worked through the heat to accomplish all of the handstiching, I wondered where this quilt would go. Normally each of my quilts are made with a specific person in mind. This time it was just a creative adventure for me. Time revealed whom this was to be made for. As I worked on, my son was a awarded a grant from the Central Pa Down Syndrome Awareness Group. http://cpadsag.org/ They opened possibilities in communication for him in ways that we just couldn’t have done on our own. My heart swelled with appreciation that I decided this quilt should go to them. At the 3rd annual Buddy walk September 18, 2010 this quilt will be part of the silent auction. I hope that it will bring help to the group, so that others can receive the blessing that our family did. I also wish that the quilt provides warmth and comfort to someone who needs it.

Thanks Charity, this was such a good cause and beautiful quilt. Check out the amazing handstitching! Make sure to go give Charity a good welcome on her blog!
