Sleeping Under a Quilt, a Scrapbook Layout

Sleeping Under a Quilt stamped and embossed with Acanthus Teal Modern Gilding Powder/ scrapbooking layout

Happy January 20, 2020! Kim here today, sharing a scrapbooking layout using a new favourite stamp from Quietfire Design; ‘Sleeping Under a Quilt’ [item #6245]

My Mom is an exceptional quilter! This past Christmas, she gifted us beautiful quilts. My son was over the moon to receive a full size quilt, he has been sleeping under my Mom’s quilts all his life, and was wanting one to fit his bed! This stamp was perfect to tell this story.

Creative Scrapbooker Magazine January Sketchy Challenge

My layout started with the January Sketchy Challenge from Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. I love adapting them, to make them my own. Sketches are such a great place to start the creative process!

I used the quilt quote in the lower right corner of the grid design. I stamped it onto a piece of sturdy white cardstock using Distress Oxide ink and then embossed with Acanthus Teal Modern Gilding PowderThe Distress Oxide leaves a beautiful, crisp yet ‘juicy’ image for embossing. I like to choose a similar colour to the Modern Gilding Powder I use. Not necessary, just something I have been doing for so long, it’s just instinctual.

Note that I also added stitching to the border.

I sewed on two fabric hearts, it seemed to be a perfect embellishment for my ‘quilted’ layout.

I found the perfect background paper for the layout from a Moda Scrap collection I had in my stash called ‘The Beautiful Season Collection’. The colour was great and it looks like a border one might find on a quilt...I was really trying to keep with that theme!

I am really happy to have this story told and tucked into a scrapbook album. Often we think of stamps as a card making elements, but some of them are so lovely to add to scrapbooking layouts. This particular quote couldn’t be any more perfect for the job I needed it to do!

Happy creating in 2020!

There Are Many Gifts ~ Christmas Card

Quietfire Design There Are Many Gifts stamp set / CopperScroll Gilding Powders / Christmas card designed by Kim Gowdy

Monday mornings are a whole lot more fun when I get to share some creative play on the Quietfire Creations Blog! Over the weekend I was working to get a few more Christmas cards completed, time is ticking away and soon I’ll need to get my cards in the mail! Quietfire Design has some beautiful stamp sets with amazing quotes and images, it was hard to decide which to create with. Once I choose to play with the “There Are Many Gifts” set...the fun started!

My background was created with three colours of Distress Oxide inks, blended on top of Creative Scrapbooker Superstock. Lately I have been grabbing greens, but any combination of Distress Oxides always seem to work perfectly!

Once my layers were blended, I splattered water over top very randomly. I like to let it sit for a bit before lifting excess water with paper towel. This adds lots of visual texture and interest. I often soften the water spots with some more blended ink.

I stamped the sentiment from the stamp set with Vintage Photo Distress Oxide and then embossed with the Copper Scroll Modern Gilding Powder. Oxide inks are fluid and wet enough to use with embossing powders. I used the same ink to the edges of my cardstock.

I made a decorative element by embossing a chipboard die cut with Copper Scroll Modern Gilding Powder. Embossed chipboard is YUMMY!!! I love it! I layered a mono print and a Tim Holtz Paper Doll to create a frame, that sits just above my sentiment.

I felt it needed just a little something else, so I stamped a few random stars (from the same stamp set) on the background and glued on a few snowflake sequins. Sometimes it’s the smallest detail that makes me go from liking a card to loving it!

It's A Party - Be There or Be Square

Hello.  It's Wanda here today to share a Party Invite card.

A Way With Words Stamps & Dies --

For the colorful panel I started with white card stock cut to 5" x 3 1/4".  Distress Oxide ink was sponged on using mini blending tools and then dried using a heat tool.

Next I added Transparent Gloss Texture Paste (Ranger) through a stencil (Stamper's Anonymous).  Transparent paste goes on white and then dries clear.  However, if you adding paste over something that is water soluble, then the paste usually draws up (or absorbs) some of the color it's on top of.

I've used the Texture Paste over Distress Oxides that have been oxidized with water but this was the first time I used it just over the sponged ink, no oxidizing.  I knew it would change the look where the paste was verses where there wasn't any paste.  I was not expecting pink.  It's fine here and I like how it looks. It is something to remember though and you might want to test on a scrap if you are concerned what a color might do for a project.

All the stamping was done with VersaFine Onyx Black.  The month was die cut with the smallest Stitched Circle Cutting Die (Elizabeth Craft Design's).  The number 4 was punched with a 1/2" circle punch.  It's easiest to stamp the number and then punch with the number showing through the back.

Party was die cut from white cardstock and then embossed.  I embossed two layers of clear embossing powder and then did one layer of white embossing powder.  There are what looks like air bubbles in the embossing which I think looks really cool.  I don't know why it did that, but I might experiment some time to figure it out.

The edges of the month, number, and Be There banner were inked with Wilted Violet.  Twine was attached to the back of the circles to make them look like balloons and they are popped up with foam.  Once I saw the picture I wished I had wrapped the twine to the right of where it is so it wouldn't look like it's crooked (not something that stands out seeing it in person), but everything is very well stuck and I'm not going to mess with it :-)

Thanks for following along!!!

Be Brave, Each of Us has a Song to Sing

Hello Again!!!!  It's Wanda and I hope today finds you well!!!

I had fun putting this project together.  I started with Distress Oxide Inks onto Distress Mixed Media Heavystock paper.  I put the inks onto a craft sheet, sprayed with water, and dipped my paper in repeating until I was happy with it.

Next I did some layers of stenciling with the A Way With Words Dotty Stencil (from Quietfire Design or Elizabeth Craft Designs).  First I put the stencil on, sprayer some water, removed the stencil, blotted the paper and dried it.  This left light colored circles that you can make out a bit.  Next I put the stencil on and inked through it with Distress Oxide Salty Ocean.  Finally, using just the largest circles along the edges, I inked through with Snow Cap Pigment Ink.

The crow and the music are both from the Crows - Set of 9 stamp set.  After being sure the panel was completely dry and tapping an anti-static pad over it, I stamped the music and embossed it with Detail Black Powder.  I stamped the crow and embossed it with Black Sparkle Powder.  Each of Us has a Song is stamped with Archival Ink Jet Black, no embossing, and I wish I had embossed it or used a stamping platform to stamp it, but I didn't.  To help it show from the background a bit better, I used a water brush to brush water over that area, blotted off some of the color, and dried it.  I inked around the edges of the panel with Distress Oxide Frayed Burlap and finally embossed the edges with Black Sparkle Powder.

The next layer is paper cut from an old music book.  I crumpled the piece well, flattened it back out (but not too much), rubbed a Distress Ink Tea Dye pad direct to the paper, sprayed the paper with water, and dried it.

I die cut Be Brave (from Quietfire Design or Elizabeth Craft Designs) from black cardstock, set it on but it was just too much black.  I thought silver might work well so embossed the black words with Silver Embossing Powder...

but I didn't think they stood out enough so I embossed right over the silver with Wendy Vecchi's Cactus Blossom Powder - I liked that.  The final detail was dots of Cactus Blossom Enamel Accents.  It's all attached to black cardstock.

I hope you've enjoyed today's project and that you find some time to play with your inks and stamps this week.

Hugs, Wanda

Hello!!!  It's Wanda here today to share a card for Christmas in July!!

*Onto Mixed Media Cardstock work up a background with Distress Oxide Ink (Picked Raspberry, Twisted Citron, Peeled Paint).

Always Believe That Something Wonderful is About to Happen

Hello and Happy May Day!!!  It's Wanda with you today.  It's been very wet and chilly here in Southern Iowa and I'm ready for the warm weather to come back.

I recently bought a Royal Sovereign Laminator (Model CL-1223) and have been testing it out with foil.  Very fun!!!!  For this card I wanted to try using Transparent Embossing Paste.  Onto a piece of Mixed Media Paper (Ranger), I put the paste through the Butterfly Kaleidoscope stencil scraping it mostly flat, removed the stencil (clean your stencil before the paste dries), let the paste completely dry on the paper, put a piece of foil over the paper (Therm-O-Web iCraft deco foil, Emerald Watercolor), placed the paper with the foil on top inside a folded piece of parchment paper,  ran it through the heated up laminator, pulled the piece of foil off and, ta-da!!, gorgeous foiled, dimensional butterflies!!!

I added background color to the piece with Distress products.  I sprayed some water on the paper first, then sprayed Distress Spray Stain Picked Raspberry just in the center of the paper (but, of course, you get speckles toward the edges of the paper), blotted with a paper towel and dried it.  Around the edges I inked with Distress Ink Mustard Seed and Squeezed Lemonade and then also distressed the edges.  When I was putting the card together I decided to add a bit more to the background and did some random stamping with the Crackle Background using Distress Ink Mustard Seed

For my center piece I also started with Mixed Media Cardstock (Ranger), inked the Crackled Background with Distress Oxide Ink Cracked Pistachio, gave it a very light spray with water and then stamped it onto the paper, dried it, stamped the quote (Always Believe) with Archival Ink Jet Black, sprayed the paper with Distress Spray Stain Squeezed Lemonade, blotted it, dried it, dripped on some water, blotted it, dried it, cut it out with a Stitched Circled die (Elizabeth Craft Designs), and inked the edges with Distress Ink Mowed Lawn.

The "flowers" are Elizabeth Craft Designs ModaScrap Dandelion Fluff diecut from colored cardstock, inked with Embossing Ink (Ranger), embossed with clear powder, and white dots added to the ends with a Posca Paint Marker.  The butterfly is metal (Finnabair Mechanical Grungy Butterflies, Prima).  I used my finger to dab on some Ranger Ink Enamel Accents (a mix of Classic Cherry and Wild Orchid).  I've also used a paper doily and some twine on the card.

I hope you've enjoyed this card.  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for following along!!!!

Hugs, Wanda

Friendship isn't a Big Thing

Hello All!!!!!!!  It's Wanda here today with a mixed media card.

My main panel is 6 3/8" x 4 3/4".  Using the Flourished Frame Stencil I applied white Embossing Paste to the panel (be sure to clean the stencil right away when finished).  Once the paste was dry, I inked over the panel with Distress Oxide Inks - Fossilized Amber in the center area and Cracked Pistacchio around the edges - allowing the colors to blend in the frame area.  Once inked I lightly sprayed the panel with water and dried it.  Next I used the Distress Marker Spiced Marmalade on the embossing paste, applying some on the top of the paste and then using my finger to rub and spread it.  Yes, some went off the paste onto the card creating shadows, more in some areas and less in others.  The quote, Friendship Isn't A Big Thing, was stamped onto the panel with Archival Ink Jet Black using the Misti Stamping Tool.  It was stamped a few times to make it nice and dark.  Next I stenciled the hearts, Hearts and Paws Prints Spray Stencil, with Fossilized Amber Oxide.  Where the ink went over the lettering it softened the color but I hadn't removed the stamp from the press so was able to stamp it again.  Later I decided I should have used Cracked Pistacchio so stenciled the hearts again bumping the stencil a bit and not covering all the Fossilized Amber. I then gave a very light misting of water over the panel.  I had meant to stamp the quote again but forgot until I was already assembling the flower on the card.  It is not as noticeable in person as it is in the picture.  The flower is Susan's Garden Notes Queen Anne's Lace (Elizabeth Craft Designs). There are wonderful videos on YouTube for cutting and assembling the flowers.  Finally I edged the panel with Distress Paint Tarnished Brass.  This is layered to a white panel, green craft thread (Tim Holtz) wrapped around, and layered to the folded green card.
