Celebrate - Simple Customized Z-Fold Card

 

Today we’re making a simple customized Z-Fold Card using the A Way With Words dies.  Each time you change the word, I’ll show you how to change the card size.  This technique was featured in our Facebook Live on October 29, 2020 which is embedded in this post below!

Patterned Cardstock
Glue Dots
Ruler
Tape runner
Plain copy or multiuse paper

Instructions:

1. Die cut your a Way With Words word twice – from the same colour cardstock.  I used white.

 

2. First we’re going to make a template.  Place one of the die cut words about ¼” from the edge of the copy paper and use a pencil to mark about ¼” from the left side of the word.  Vertically score a line at that mark and fold. 

 

3. Measure the distance from the edge of the paper to the fold. (For this card it was 5”.) Divide that number in half (2.5”) and create another score line using that measurement to the left of the first score line.  Fold.

4.  Trim excess paper so the new edge aligns with the first fold.

 

 5. Trim the height of the template to the size of card you will ultimately want.

6.       When you’re happy with the template, cut your card base from pretty patterned cardstock.

7.       Cut a strip of plain cardstock as long as the card is wide in the open position and that is slightly wider than the letters are.  Cut another strip slightly wider from coordinating cardstock and adhere the two strips together.  

 

8. Trim a piece of the strip to fit the back of the card (5”) and adhere in place.  Adhere the diecut to the middle of this strip.

9. Adhere the rest of the strip to the left side of the open card. Adhere the second Celebrate diecut to this strip so, when folded, the diecut words line up perfectly.  Trim the right side of the diecut to the fold line. 

10.Use the left over strip to stamp the sentiment and adhere to the “hidden” fold. Perfect!  All done!

Just use this technique for any of the word dies.   The Cherish baby card below had different measurements.  The first score line was 4” from the right edge of the card.  It’s a smaller word, so the card is smaller.  You can customize your z-fold cards just this way for any of the A Way With Words dies!

This is such a lovely set of dies and the "Autumn" die is just perfect for this time of year!

Let me show you how I made my card!

I first started out with a piece of 140lb watercolor paper.  This paper was a sample set that had every kind of watercolor paper that this company makes. I lightly sprayed it with water.  Then I sprinkled on - very lightly - PaperArtsy Infusions in Olive Tree and Golden Sands.

These pigments are like ColorBurst pigments and are very strong.  I really wanted to retain the mottled look you get when you first sprinkle them on wet paper.  I allowed this to dry thoroughly.  Then I took my "Autumn" die and die cut the word.  I already had my paper chosen.

I love the effect I get with the pigments on this die cut.  Next I gathering all of my supplies

together that I would be using.

My paper comes from Kaisercraft "Fallen Leaves" collection and I really felt the color

palette was sophisticated and blended well with the calligraphy of the die cut.

My card base is made from Brutus Monroe "Martini" card stock - it's a lovely olive color.  I cut that 

to 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" and scored and folded it in the middle.  My darker patterned paper

measures 4 1/8" x 5 3/8"I adhered that down first.  My next patterned paper measures

3 1/2" x 4 3/4".  Before adhering it to the base, I inked the edges with Antique Linen

Distress Ink.

This gives the edges just a bit of definition.  I also inked the little flag.  I adhered down

the patterned piece and the flag with the addition circle piece on it.  

Before adding my

die cut "Autumn" to my card I cut it out 3 times out of a golden color card stock scrap.

I stacked these together and then adhered them to my project.  And that finished my card!

I decided against any embellishments...I liked the softness and elegance that it had.

Autumn Notes

It is on my bucket list to see the Northeast portion of the United States in the fall - specifically Vermont and New York.  The Shenandoah Skyline Drive is gorgeous in Virginia but I want to see more red!  But I've been inspired by the changing colors to make another slimline card combining Autumn Notes by Quietfire Design word dies with the recent release from Elizabeth Craft Designs. 

To make my slim line cards, I start with 8.5 x 11 white card stock.  The base layer is 3.5" x 8.25" and the card base is from the leftover.

The Autumn Notes were cut from thick card stock and covered with Modern Gilding Powder Copper Scroll.  I also used the Modern Gilding Powder Gothic Black on the elegant ornament die - looks so rich in real life to have that added weight to it.

On a sheet of watercolor paper, I used all the fall colors that the Color Bursts (remember those?) because I like the mottled look that happens.

I also lightly sponged the edges of the card so that the white card base could act as a matting.
