A Beginner's Guide to Sushi

A Beginner's Guide to Sushi

Download EBook Learn To Make Sushi At Home

If you are new to the wonder world of sushi, this infographic will help you learn the basics of the Japanese food. From Blu on the Avenue Restaurant, the infographic provides sushi newbies with everything they need to know before visiting their first sushi restaurant.
Sushi doesn't necessarily mean raw fish. It usually includes vegetables, fish and seasoned rice. Sushi is served with a side of wasabi and ginger. And, those thin slices of fish that are served without rice are called sashimi.
During your first visit to a sushi restaurant, start with cooked fish like eel, shrimp or clams. Then have a taste of fish-free sushi rolls like cucumber, avocado and other vegetables. When you're ready to try your hand at raw fish, start with fish you are familiar with. Also stick to mild tastes like tuna or scallops. To get the hang of eating sushi rolls, start with smaller sizes and don't forget that rolls should be eaten in one moutful.

4 Foods That May Shorten Your Life

Getty Images

Everyone wants to know the secret to living longer. There’s no telling what exactly helps some people make it to 100, but healthy eating is one thing that sure does help.
Some foods, though, could actually hurt your chances of growing older by messing with components in your cells called telomeres. These little caps on the ends of your chromosomes are key for protecting DNA from damage—many experts compare them to the plastic tips on the end of shoelaces.

Thing is, as your cells replicate, telomeres get shorter over time, according to the University of Utah Health Sciences. As telomeres shorten it can trigger cells to malfunction and die, and shorter telomeres have been linked to conditions like cancer and cardiovascular disease. Research has also shown lifestyle factors including diet can speed up (or slow down) the shortening process, which is sometimes thought of as an “aging clock.”

These four foods can contribute to telomere shortening, so it might be best to limit these eats for a long and healthy life.

Epidemiologist David R. Jacobs, Ph.D., of the University of Minnesota calls it food synergy, and he, along with many other nutritionists, believes it might explain why Italians drizzle cold-pressed olive oil over tomatoes and why the Japanese pair raw fish with soybeans. "The complexity of food combinations is fascinating because it's tested in a way we can't test drugs: by evolution," says Jacobs. And, he adds, "it's tested in the most complex of systems: life."
