Narnia

Every year at Thanksgiving and Christmas Cpc's family gathers at "the cabin." It belongs to Cpc's grandparents, there's a room for each of their kids, and a loft for the kids. It's Narnia themed, complete with a "Wardrobe" playhouse out back for the kids. We love the time we spend there.

This year (and in times past) we gathered at the cabin with Cpc's high school friends and their wives - who all have children of their own as well. We really enjoyed our time this year - and the boys particularly loved it after taking an opportunity to build a snowcave. It's fun for the wives to see the husbands together acting like boy scouts again. I am embarrassed to post this video - it's pretty funny though. Beware, it's like five minutes long!

Also, cdc took his first steps on his very own at the cabin. So here's that!

Cpc

I'm on a roll with posting. This is great. Not nearly so daunting. I can just post a couple little notes on one subject and feel accomplished. YES!

So, Cpc! What a sneaky and smart little two-year-old he is these days. Living at G&P's house is a whole new adventure in parenting. There are so many new things to figure out, and there's no stopping this kid once he decides he wants to figure something out. He fed the dog today, including the plaque-fighting powder that is included in her meals. He is determined to figure out what the boards and posts that are in the living room are for. They are for a quilting frame. He has nearly knocked every lamp in that room over picking up those 1x4's. Lovely. I can't leave him alone for 5 seconds, and I'm not doing very well at that. But I sure LOVE his determination to figure everything out, and it makes it really hard to discipline him.

Cpc loves the trains as well, especially the sound effects. He is also loving all of the games he got for Christmas. He loves to sing. He is most talented at singing "Follow the Prophet," "Rudolph," "Frosty the Snowman," and "Edelweiss." Now instead of asking me to sing "Sing a Rainbow" twelve times each night, he requests each of the his twelve favorite songs once. He loves to color with his new paints and markers, as his interest in crayons has waned now that he has them all figured out. He LOVES Thomas and requests to watch it daily, although it is the ONLY movie that he lasts just 10 minutes for.

Recently during a dinner in which he had not yet eaten the cauliflower and chicken on his plate, we asked him if he wanted treats when we got to Momsey's house. His response was "No, I wan moh rice pease!" Such a sweetheart!

Cdc

Well, since I'm working on simple blog posts. This one is devoted to cdc.

My sweet cdc. He is babbling up a storm. Cpc never said things like goo-goo and ga-ga. But boy, cdc sure does. I love it. His nickname "baby" sure fits him these days. He loves "da-da", and even says "heh da" (hi dad) quite often. He has learned to call me "na-na" which I am more than thrilled to hear each time he says it.

Cdc LOVES the train table that Santa brought the boys for Christmas. He can bash those trains all over the train table for 30 minutes at a time. He has learned to stand up to his brother, even pushing him out of the way quite often. He does still give his martyr cry, even if he won out over his brother - but we still love him. He loves peek-a-boo during diaper changes and car rides, his two least favorite activities. His favorite foods are still Cheerios, bananas and bread. He learned to like cauliflower this week, since it had delicious cheese on it.

Cdc's biggest accomplishment as of late is his standing abilities. He is now happy to stand next to his train table and bash trains without touching the table for a good 45 seconds. He has slacked off in his enthusiasm for walking, probably because I have tried too many times to get him to do it (I know he can do it, if only he'd try!) He can take 1-2 steps on his own however, if you fool him into it.

Oh how we love this little Swedish boy of ours!

A Fresh Start

Along with the new year comes our wedding anniversary, so each January we have a lot to think about when it comes to evaluating ourselves and planning for the future.

However, neither of us have ever been real gung-ho when it comes to new year's resolutions. Don't get me wrong, we like goals (okay, I LOVE them). But I think the whole "new year's resolutions" thing tends to make people set these huge goals without really planning how to get there. So people get all ambitious for two weeks, then fall apart for two weeks, and then spend 48 weeks wondering what went wrong before doing the same thing all over again. Or maybe that's what I used to do when I was younger. No more, serving a mission totally changed that for me - and for my family.

When pmc where serving missions our church came out with a new manual for missionaries called "Preach My Gospel." We LOVE it - we use it monthly for Family Home Evening. Even though it's for missionaries, it's totally applicable in so many ways to just normal life. Well, there is a whole chapter in there about how to use time wisely, which includes setting and living to reach goals. Along with this new manual came some new missionary planners. I have never seen more simple yet thorough planners (even my old favorite Moleskine) - until December when we were walking through Deseret Book. Some company thought like I did and has produced the "return missionary" planner.

Three weeks in, we're loving them. Mr. Flexible and Mrs. Schedule are now working together much more harmoniously. Mrs. Goals has finally limited herself to one goal at a time and is actually tracking them, while Mr. One-thing-at-a-time is finally allowed to freely work on his desired goal without distraction. Our family is progressing much more efficiently. There is much more peace. We are not nearly so worried about the fact that opposites attracted in our case.

So our family goal this year is to "PROGRESS." Pmc will be working to "strengthen," atec will be working to "find joy," cpc will be working to "discover," and cdc will be working to "step forward." We definitely strayed this year from our one-word-goals, but there was simply no way around it. We are excited to be a little more capable, at the end of 2011, of reflecting on the progress we made. We struggled with that at the end of 2010. Oh well . . . onward and upward!

So, a fresh start for us. As for our blog, we are attempting to give it a fresh start as well. The plan is to have many more short posts by writing in our planners the things we want to blog about, and scheduling it in. My only problem is that as soon as I write down one thing I want to blog about, a whole list comes to mind - and then it seems daunting. So, I better simplify!

Good luck to all in the New Year!
