Newspapers and ukeleles

From The Quotations Page:
"Trying to be a first-rate reporter on the average American newspaper is like trying to play Bach's St. Matthew's Passion on a ukulele."
Bagdikian's Observation

My immediate thought is that somebody, somewhere, is playing St. Matthew's Passion on a ukelele right this minute.

In fact, I was haranged for weary half hour very recently by a mandolin player who insisted his instrument does not get enough respect in the classical world and that he, personally, feels his Bach arrangements are underappreciated.

Weren't there a bunch of mandolin orchestras in the early 20th century? There are mandolas, mando-cellos, mando-basses, and all sorts of things that didn't quite catch on.

The F5 Gibson mandolin was particuarly intended for classical use. Too bad for your friend Bill Monroe found one in a barbershop--Now it's the standard for bluegrass. There are great things being done with mandolins today, even if some turn their noses up at them.
