Review: Restoran Angcle Peoh

>> Sunday, August 30, 2015

Overall comment: One of the best asam laksa that I've tasted...and oh, the duck egg fried kuey teow was really delicious too!
Halal: No

You may wonder why the strange spelling of the restaurant name, eh? I was wondering the same when I first heard of this place 'til I read the story on the wall of the restaurant :D How interesting! Read on!

This restaurant has been around for about a year. I was there during brunch & the crowd that trickled in for lunch was "wow"! It's tucked in the busy area of Bandar Bukit Tinggi 2, Klang, which makes its competition even stiffer. To survive & do really well in such an area needs a restaurant to serve some really good food. On that same road itself, I noticed 3 Penang food restaurants, but I reckon Angcle Peoh's truly stands out among the rest.

The lunch crowd on a Saturday

Here's to share with you what I've tried that morning:

Winter Melon with Aloe Vera & Basil Seed Cold (RM4.90/glass)
Refreshing drink to quench your thirst & especially great if you think the asam laksa is spicy for you.

Angcle Peoh himself preparing bowls of delectable asam laksa

Asam Laksa (RM6.90/serving)
I actually enjoyed Angle Peoh's asam laksa as it has the right balance of sour, spicy, sweet & savory. It's not too sour nor too spicy, which was just the way I liked it. The soup had generous portions of fish in it, prawn paste & also onions, lettuce & mint leaves. Very well balanced, I must say. Oh, noodles weren't stingy in portion as well :)

Penang Fried Kuey Teow with Duck Egg (RM8.90/serving or RM6.90 with chicken egg)
I was really delighted to find that the kuey teow used are the thinner strands of kuey teow! Fragrant with sufficient garlic, duck egg & chili to give it an extra kick. The best part - it has enough "wok hei"/"wok-fire"! One of the best Penang char kuey teow too!

Fried Tom Yam Mee (RM9.90/serving)
Oooo...fried tom yam Vit's noodles?? I LOVED IT! Sourish, slightly sweet, slightly spicy, slightly savory...another well-balanced dish. The amount of seafood on this plate of noodles was also generous & perfectly cooked (the squid didn't feel like rubber/over-cooked!). "Umph!" - wok hei, flavor & all.

Penang Fried Hokkien Noodles (RM8.90/serving)
This is my 2nd time tasting the Penang Fried Hokkien Noodles in Selangor. I don't come across such a dish often nor do I order this when I come across any...haha...lacking confidence, I guess. Despite having no/less dark soy sauce, this dish was pretty tasty. It has the fragrance of pork lard, which elevates a simple, classic dish to the next level.

Cendol (RM5.00/serving)
Who doesn't fancy authentic Penang cendol? Their cendol fell below par in my humble opinion as it was slightly too rich with coconut milk & the cendol was slightly hard. Overall, it was still delicious compared to the many so-called Penang cendol in Selangor.

This restaurant serves other delightful Penang favorites as well as some classic Chinese noodle dishes like pork noodles (my family loved it!). You'll find the classic Penang prawn noodles, Penang rojak, Penang Hokkien mee/prawn mee, Penang white curry mee, nasi lemak & nasi lemak ayam merah.

Angcle Peoh's restaurant is opening its next branch at Kota Kemuning next month!! You have to try their Asam Laksa & Penang Fried Kuey Teow to the very least. I'm really looking forward to the opening of their new branch as it'll be nearer to where I stay :D Woohoo! Good Penang food nearby! *dance dance*

Review: I'm Chef Cafe, Taman OUG

>> Wednesday, March 11, 2015

Ah, time flies! I've been so caught up with work, house-moving & CNY that this poor blog has been abandoned for more than a month *cries*

To revive my blog, allow me to introduce to you to a pocket-friendly cafe that's located at OUG Garden. I'm Chef æˆ‘是煮人 is a humble cafe located on a relatively new grey-colored building behind Shell petrol station (near myBurger Lab). This cafe aims to serve Penang-style food with a home-cooked-food feeling, where all the dishes are specially prepared by the restaurant owner's mother from Penang, whom we refer to as "Miao Ma".

Simple cafe with seats available inside & outside
The cafe's concept is very simple, straight to the point with nothing fanciful. One may mistake it as a cafeteria, but it's actually more comfortable than a cafeteria yet not as fanciful as our usual coffee joints/cafe.

Some of the dishes that we reviewed are as below:

Penang Lobak (RM5.00/serving)
This Penang lobak is not available at all times; only when Miao Ma gets the lobak itself personally, fresh from Penang. It's pretty tasty & serves as a good appetizer/snack. Firm, fragrant, tasty meat 'rolls'. Noms!

Penang Rojak (RM5.00/serving)
Fresh fruits, vegetables & crispies with fragrant home-recipe rojak paste. Another good snack/appetizer.

Penang Hokkien-Fried Mee (RM7.90/serving)
It's been a long time since I had this dish. The best part of this very homey-tasting fried noodles was the home-made sambal! SO GOOD - fragrant, "seductive" - makes you want more although it's very spicy!

Penang Mamak Mee (RM7.90/serving)
Maio Ma fries this mamak mee as well, but I felt that her version was slightly too wet for my liking. I prefer dry, fried mamak mee. This version was slightly sweeter as well.

Aunty Chicken Chop (RM12.90/serving)
I actually found the sauce for this chicken chop very interesting & different (a good different). It had a VERY familiar 'breakfast taste'...and we found out that there's actually blended baked beans in the sauce! Very interesting. I'm not a huge fan of baked beans, but this was good with the crispy & juicy deep-fried chicken thigh :D

Three Taste Fish w/ Rice (RM8.90/serving)
This is a good portion for lunch/dinner. A generous serving of fried dory fish fillet, 1 fried egg + a bowl of rice for RM8.90. The sauce for the fish is Miao Ma's own home-made recipe as well. She revealed that she mixed onions, garlic, soya sauce, cap Arnab chili sauce, & lime (kat zhai) juice as well. Very appetizing.

Eight Treasure Drink RM2.00/cup (Hot), RM2.30/cup (Cold)
We concluded the review with her recommended Eight Treasure Drink (Pat Poh Leong Cha). To me, such drinks can't go wrong ;)

If you're working/studying/living around the area, this is a good option to a satisfying economical meal. Miao Ma is more than happy to share her love for cooking with you!

Review: Delifrance Malaysia Christmas Menu

>> Tuesday, December 23, 2014

As I sit in the bedroom, overlooking the gloomy weather outside the window in the wet & rainy Kuantan town, my stomach rumbles & longs for a warm, comforting meal. Too bad there isn't a Delifrance outlet here at Kuantan. Imagine biting into warm, crispy pie crust with oozing, creamy meat & mushrooms, on a rainy weather - bliss!

Delifrance Mid Valley

This Christmas, Delifrance Malaysia proudly introduces a variety of warm meals & pretty cakes. To kick-start our tasting session, we were treated to some of their all-time best-sellers as below. What better way to begin with pastries as appetizers! :P I love pastries...

The Christmas set menu was also introduced, where each dish comes with a glass of F&N Seasons' iced lemon tea.

Chicken/Beef Lasagne (RM17.90/serving)
Lasagne layers filled with minced chicken/beef in a light tangy sauce topped with melted cheese. Comfort food indeed!

Poached Salmon with Creamy Dill Sauce (RM34.90/serving)
As much as I love salmon, I felt that this dish lacks "umph" compared to the other dishes available on the Christmas set menu. Nevertheless, the salmon is nicely cooked & the creamy dill sauce complimented the salmon quite well.

Provencal Lamb Stew (RM34.90/serving)
Although this dish didn't look the most appetizing (it's all brown!), but trust me, it's one of the best dishes on the Christmas set menu. The pieces of lamb were so tender & melts in your mouth. The gravy was also very flavorful, with the right balance of herbs & spices. I'll certainly recommend trying this dish if you're here for their Christmas set menu! Oh, it comes with mashed potatoes at the bottom as well! *drools*

Cheesy Turkey Pasta (RM15.90/serving)
I'm certainly no big fan of turkey ham pasta & this was no exception. The pasta was cheesy enough, but it could get slightly cloying since the sauce is cheesy + creamy.

To complete our tasting session, desserts are certainly a must!

Mini Fruit Tartlets

Rocky Land Gift Cake (RM35.00/cake)
Blegian chocolate cake topped with ganache. I didn't try this as I was quite stuffed, but it certainly looks like a perfect Christmas indulgence :)

Santa Play Land Gift Cake (RM48.90/cake)
Who doesn't fancy red velvet cakes with sour cream cheese topping? The cake was quite moist (could be more moist though) & it wasn't too sweet. Not too bad & no doubt it looks pretty enough to be a great Christmas gift for family & friends ;)

Classic French Macarons (approx RM3.00 per macaron)
Oh-so-sweet-but-oh-so-yummy! Not the best I've had, but it's still good :D At least the shell was crusty on the outside & soft on the inside, with evident taste of its flavor (strawberry, chocolate, coffee, coconut & more).

This Christmas, for a simple yet satisfying meal, come by Delifrance & be pampered with their delicious puffs, warm Christmas set meals or even their cakes.

Review: Chicago Rib House, 1 Utama

>> Friday, January 24, 2014

Overall comment: Tender ribs that will satisfy + a good variety of non-ribs dishes to enjoy as well.
Halal: No

You would have passed by the Chicago Rib House when you shop at 1Utama's New Wing. It's one of the very few places within the shopping mall that serves porkilicious meals! Now, aren't you excited? :D

Chinese New Year is just a week away. With the many restaurants offering their Chinese New Year promotions, Chicago Rib House will not miss the opportunity to introduce to you their Porkalicious Joy Luck Sets in addition to their famous pork ribs!

The promotional Porkilicious Joy Luck Sets are available from 17th Jan to 13th  Feb 2014. Prices range from RM39.90 (individual platter), RM88.80 (for 2 pax) to RM168.80 (for 4 pax).

To add to the festive mood, Chicago Rib House has introduced the Ang Pow Dip to further reward their customers. For every order of the Porkalicious Joy Luck Set (2 pax), customers are entitled to one lucky dip, while every order of the set for 4 pax will entitle 2 lucky dips. A la carte customers can also stand a chance for the lucky dip.Every RM100.00 spent entitles for 1 lucky dip. All lucky dips are while stocks last, so don't miss out the opportunity!

Jade Empress (RM23.80++ per jug)
A refreshingly cool and lightly spiced cocktail
This is one of their CNY promotional items. It is quite a refreshing drink that paired well with the load of meat served in the set. It has a good variety of textures, flavour & fragrance. The base of the drink is the apple cider vinegar, accompanied by soda water for the fizz, cinnamon powder for the "kick" & it's topped with chopped green apples & oranges for some "bite". I kinda liked it, but I thought the taste of the cinnamon powder was a tad heavy.

* Carlsberg Beer is also available by the jug at only RM38.80++.

So what's in the set, you may wonder. I had the opportunity to taste the set for 4 pax, so here are the dishes included in the set (4 dishes):

Yee Sang
Norwegian Salmon, shredded mango, carrots, red cabbage, white radish, cucumber, cilantro, spring onion, sesame seeds, crackers and served with Chicago Rib House's specially made in-house Plum Sauce
Unlike the typical Chinese Yee Sang, Chicago Rib House uses the smoked Norwegian Salmon, which is more salty. I personally didn't like the combination of smoked salmon with fresh vegetables with a sweet sauce as it was just over-powering with salt. As per its original name of "yee sang" (yee = fish, sang = fresh), I much prefer fresh slices of fish to go with the medley of fresh vegetables.

Toss it, mix it - for a more prosperous year 2014!

The end result of the mixed "yee sang" - salad with a Chinese touch

Platter Set (RM39.90++ per set for ala carte/individual platter)
Spare ribs, pork sausages,  grilled fresh water prawns, grilled mussels, vegetable sticks & cheese dip
I love the colours on the platter; it's rich in colour & the pieces of meat were nicely positioned to bring you on a "journey" through the whole platter. I actually liked the cheese dip, although I felt as if this platter was left out to be served for quite some time (the sauce looks "left out on the counter for a little too long"). The sausages lacked the "charred taste" & same goes the spare ribs. I felt that the spare ribs were somehow too soft. Not that I like tough & rough spare ribs, but these felt "boiled"/"pressure cooked" to get it tender before grilling it just for a while (not long enough) & smothering it with the BBQ sauce. Aroma is key for such ribs & it's falling short. On the other hand, the seafood weren't exactly top-notch. Prawns weren't very fresh, but mussels are still fine. It's something that Chicago Rib House will have to look into so that their mixed platters won't be affected by their seafood pieces. Remember, ribs is key here!

Braised Pork Belly
Braised pork belly served with an Asian-inspired tangy sweet sauce of passion fruit, spices and wine
When I saw this dish, I was like "oolala...". It's like our Chinese "tau yu bak" (braised dark sauce pork) + "dong por yoke" (braised pork belly - REALLY thick fatty one). Flavour is quite good, but somehow not much got absorbed by the meat i.e. the flavour was mostly just on the surface. The braised pork belly was tender, lacking flavour & realllllllly fat!

Baby Back Ribs
Tender baby back ribs char-grilled with Plum Sauce accompanied with 2 sides
What's there to complain about a plate of baby back ribs? Chicago Ribs House is living up to its name for a good plate of pork ribs :)

Some of the side dishes available:

Beer-Battered Fries
Crispy fries just like your favourite serving of the "fish & chips" fish.

Mashed potatoes with its skin + cheese
Not the best as it's somewhat dry, but I'm a sucker for mashed potatoes, so I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Corn, Fragrant Rice, & Fresh Vegetables

Baked potato topped with sour cream, cheese & bacon bits, I think
I didn't get to try it.

Coleslaw

Ah, after those 4 dishes, I think I was over-dosed with pork, meat, & cholesterol. If you're adventurous & won't mind indulging in more sinful dishes, Chicago Rib House is also introducing the Drunken Prawns this festive season!

Drunken Prawns (RM68.80++ per set)
Steamed with white wine, flambé with brandy
It's not just a plate of steamed prawns, but an interesting "performance" as well when the staff flambé the prawns with brandy :) I didn't really like it as it lacks the alcoholic "punch" that I usually get from typical Chinese restaurants. I also felt the prawns weren't very fresh for that day.

For some variety this Chinese New Year with your family & friends, drop by Chicago Rib House & enjoy a Porkilicious Joy Luck meal! :)
