Foodie's Best - Most Creative and Unique - Old House Restaurant

Ever been to a restaurant where you do not need to decide what to order?
Well this was a first for Foodie :-)
You just walk in a let them know how many people having the meal.
So, why don't you need to decide on what you are having ...
Here is why ...

The boss, Mr Tan, is also the boss of Bee Chin Heang.
His passion of cooking has inspired him to open this unique place.
He does the marketing every morning and picks the fresh ingredients from the market.
The 'menu' therefore, is based on what is fresh from the market on that day.

So, you just walk in and wait for your surprise :-)
Best thing is you know whatever being served is fresh.

For those who have more to splurge, you can make reservations (minimum 6 pax) to try the more expensive cuisines like braised abalone, scallops, lobster dishes etc etc
Menu with prices depending on choices is available.
Decor inside is rather haphazard with loads of Chinese antiques, ambience is quite nice.
Really is very unique, you will never see another similar place like that in Penang.
So this is a MUST visit !

Dish of the day when Foodie went was, roast pork, char siew and roast duck platter ...

... pork lard (bak eow por) fried with beans ...
health freaks may not like this, check out the oil ... but its ok, only once in a blue moon ...

... steam fish ... really nice simple and fresh ...
So, the meal always comes with 3 dishes + 1 soup + 1 drink + 1 huge bowl of white rice.
Portions are generous.
For lunch is RM 13.80 per pax no service charge, no tax
For such fresh food, generous portion, and a surprise ...
Foodie feels it is all well worth it :-p

FOUR Generations of Superb Chinese Food, Penang Has It All

This is a real old town of Penang.
If you are a tourist and you want to experience old Penang at it's best with one of the best Chinese food, here is the place to go.
This place never lets you down and has been running for FOUR generations with the same consistency.

So before we venture into the delicious food, let us take a walk around the old town of Penang...

Right along Cintra Street the road parallel to People's Park where our dinner venue is, shoplot No 76 which sell the best 'Eu Char Koay' in Penang.
See later photos on a good suggestion on how to eat the 'Eu Char Koay'

Then, right opposite this shop, still along Cintra Street is Ng Kee Cake Shop, selling traditional biscuits and goodies ...
The wide selection makes your mouth water.
Even if you are not a dessert person, just go in and have a look.
There are savoury char siew buns and great sweets as well.

Now for the highlight ... Boey Chong Kee
Run by a generations of daughters in the family, tucked in the old town of Penang, this is a local's secret.  If you are a local and have never been here, please go there tonight.

This is the home of The Best Sweet & Sour Pork in The WORLD!
And no, I am not exaggerating ...
Try it if you don't believe me !

Other highly recommended dishes you should try ...

Beef Tendon with Egg - Ngau Pak Yip (Cantonese)
Sour Plum Steamed Fish Head
Stir Fry Beef with Bitter Gourd
Braised Duck
Braised Spare Ribs
Beef Sar Hor Fun with Egg
Seafood Hor Fun

I think if you are a red meat person, try all the beef and duck dishes ...

Dip your 'Eu Char Koay' in to the sweet and sour pork sauce and you are in heaven ...

Tip from Foodie
Go with a big group of people so you can savor more dishes
Also must go early as the wait may be very long... after all this is a family business
Over the years, the prices here have gone up rather drastically but what to do ...
if you come across good food, it has to be worth the money cause
these days ...
GOOD FOOD IS HARD TO FIND !

Best Koay Chap with Worst Tong Sui (Dessert)

If you never had Koay Chap in your life, this is the best in Penang, you should try this one to make it a memorable first.
The stall only starts in the evening, the older ladies in charge of taking your orders may not be very friendly but it's ok, cause the food is good ... so we have to bear with it.
That said, they are super efficient, fast and hardly get your orders wrong.

Plenty of places to sit.  This stall, which used to be by the roadside, has now bought up a shop lot of their own.  Although they are still by the road, they now have proper seating for their customers.

Standard order is RM 6 per bowl.
Very good value for money considering the amount of goodies they put inside. If you are not someone who is into spare parts, you can ask for just duck meat and koay ie the starchy carbs :-)
Don't forget to request for the ever tasty chili sauce, if you love it, you can ask for more with no extra charge...

New seating area is nice and clean

Now we come to the Major Rip Off !
The shop lot owned by the Koay Chap stall is placed next to a dessert stall.
The minimum price for the dessert is RM2.50.
Do NOT let the girls pressure you to order the dessert, unless you really want to order.
You are not required to order a drink as the stall belongs to Koay Chap stall ie. you could order other drinks from any stall or shop along Kimberley street and not specifically this one.

The dessert is super diluted, tasteless and overpriced
Foodie will NOT like this one ...

All along Kimberley Street you will see lots of street food. One of them will be Economy Fried Bee Hoon.  A few of these stalls selling the same stuff.
The taste is rather standard.
You could buy a packet and eat at the Koay Chap place, they are ok with it.

There is also a nice Koay Teow Thing stall opposite the Koay Chap stall, Char Koay Teow (not great) and a Chee Cheong Fun (very nice)/
All in all Kimberley Street has plenty to offer.
The ambience here is different for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Have fun exploring street food at Kimberley Street.
