Hello 2013! Going Big

Ok 2013, I'm keeping this short and sweet.

I usually write up a list of my goals at the beginning of the year (looks like I missed 2012...it was a rough start) but I really don't feel like making a long-winded post about it. My theme for 2013 is "Go Big" or another vulgar one (my fave) "S*** or Get off the Pot". (And oh lord am I cringing at the amount of times I've written about pillow making and hiring help)
  • Create everyday / aka get my hands dirty / more FELTING (and shut off that computer)
  • Make a small line of pillows (I just ordered the wool and it's on the way!)
  • Work with my most fave places to create something exclusively for them
  • Hire some helping hands (anyone out there interested in a day or 2 a week??)
  • Look into artist residencies
So that's the gist. Capisce?

And before I go, I've got some new and one-of-a-kind pincushions fresh in the Etsy shop! They're all made from scraps of my hand felted merino wool leftover from projects and pillows from years before. They're all a little wonky, different shaped with fabric backings. You can even have the option of getting your initials stitched on the back. I just love this idea just as much as I love the idea of pincushions being such a personal item in general.  I've met people who have had their pin cushions for a really long time. What about you?

I Swear I Listen

I've received requests in the past to carry smaller sets of coasters in my shop and I'm sorry that it took me this long to get a set up!

Available in pistachio, moss, acid green and a medium heather brown. They're IN STOCK and ready to ship. Get going on those holiday gifts or as a little something for a gracious host at the next housewarming party. People always love these cozy guys.

Fall Designs in the Shop!

I updated the shop with my fall designs. Wahoo! Hang out and take a gander.

Pod Vase

The other side of the Pod Vase...just cause it's so cute....
Coaster set (includes a bowl, 6 coasters and a handy leather strap)

Nesting bowls in some new shades

Bubble cuffs

Wrist pods

Here are a couple of small new features that I'm digging in my fall line.....this mixed detail in my wrist pods. I love the painterly effect.

Same idea here with some hand stitching in my tall bud vases.

I *HEART* fall.

New Designs

Some new necklaces I cooked up a few weeks ago and designs i've been thinking about making for a long time. Combining fabric with felting has been churning in my mind forever.

I've come to realize that it can take me a good 6 months or so of thinking about a design (somewhat passively) and then BOOM! I need to make them NOW. And then, voila, in 2 days. MADE!

I'll be putting these in my Etsy shop tomorrow the 19th! (and a few more on Friday as well)

Things Are a-Changing (and getting some things off my chest)

I just launched my new website last week. I had given myself a deadline (up to right before I got on a plane to Austin to see my new baby nephew) and I accomplished it, but not without a lot of lack of sleep, tons of coffee and just lots of unnecessary stress. Somehow this is how I do things. Set deadlines, throw in some major procrastination, get closer to said deadline, work harder, panic, panic, coffee, coffee, ignore husband for several days and then DONE! I know lots of people who do this, but it always seems like I'm the best at it. And when I say best, I mean the craziest. Not in a good way.

Regardless, my site is up, I really love it and I'm excited to be able to upload my work myself in real time. I had been wanting a gallery-like site and I got it! So go take a peek already. I'll wait here.

In other "things are a -changing" news, I finished working on my fall 2012 line which is something I've never done before (having a seasonal line.) To be honest, I fought this since I started my business. I just thought I didn't need to, that I didn't want to be held down by a season so that I could create willy-nilly whenever I wanted. Well, this year I decided to make some changes. First off I met with Rena Tom, strategist extraordinaire for creative businesses. It was an intense hour of back and forth and it helped me SO much - thanks Rena! She helped me formulate a plan for my business and it really rejuvenated me big time. I came home and got cracking that very day. I feel very grown-up in my little business - new website, new fall line, created my first linesheet to send to stores, edited my current product line and I'm working on a small line for spring 2013. Holy smokes, who am I????

Before all of these changes came about, I had a couple of really rough months. Late last year I had made the decision to take some time off in my business and I think it was a culmination of going through some personal things and being in a rut with Papaver Vert. I didn't write about what was going on here (like I did when my husband and I lost our friend Chris to suicide last year) mainly because I just didn't feel like sharing yet. A few weeks before Christmas, my mom came down with a mysterious illness and was hospitalized for 10 days. I was so freaked out to see my mom that ill that I lived in her hospital room the whole time, not wanting to leave her side. Thank the stars she is doing so much better now but being confronted with the idea of losing my mom was a real rude awakening.

Then, several months later, my husband and I lost his mom to breast cancer. She had been diagnosed several years before, so we knew what was coming, but it was still shocking none-the-less. We were able to be right next to Lynda, in her house, when she died. I feel so lucky to have been there right at that moment.....we didn't know that that would be the day. I mean, how often do you get a chance to witness such a personal moment and say goodbye? My mother-in-law was always so lovely to me and accepted me as her daughter from the moment I met her. It's not often you hear that about a mother-in-law, right? There was a time in my young life when my mom didn't speak to me. I felt like the world had ended but Lynda's house was my refuge and I spent so much time there. I will always be grateful for that and even though I never told her how much it meant to me, I'd like to think she knew. On a side note, Lynda was an avid crafter. A few weeks after she died, I cleared out her craft room, donated a bunch of things while taking home lots and lots of books, yarns and antique notions for myself. She was always giving me bits and pieces from her room so I know she'd be happy that I took lots of good things. Thanks so much Lynda :)

Looking back, I'm pretty sure what got me out of my funk was my work. And by that I mean working with my hands, designing, creating. More so then thinking about my business. And then the business followed. And then the openness to changing. And now here!

Things are a-changing and it's good.

More to love!

Would it be bragging if I say how much I'm in love with my Bubble Cuffs? Fine then. I can't help it.

As a designer you can't help but love your own work (most of the time) and feel an attachment, and I just have to say that this little lovely is my baby. It just wears so well, feels good on and is more than just a plain ol' bracelet. There's just so much more to love people! I'm hoping you're picking up what I'm putting down.

Hand crocheted with 100%wool, then wet felted, trimmed and steamed. The wool has some stretch to it which makes for a nice fit.

Currently in my Etsy shop in 4 solid colors - mustard, turquoise, leaf green and bright blue. And one duo in turquoise and grey.

And soon to be on their way to Rare Device in San Francisco!

Ok. Done bragging.

Renegade Craft Fair!!

Can you hear me people? I'm yelling out that title for a reason! This weekend, the Renegade Craft Fair is  T H E   P L A C E   T O    B E!!

Yes, I've have had my fair share of coffee today (and this week) gearing up for the show, but even if I hadn't, I'd still be as psyched :) It's such a great show, with such talented artists and the friendliest of faces. Here you not only get to shop such a diverse crowd of vendors, but you get to rub elbows with the people making their passions. You get to ask the who, what and why of their designs and of themselves. It's truly personal shopping at it's best.

Here's a few pics of things I've been working on that I'll be selling this weekend:

Glass cozy w16 oz./tumbler - $54/each (one-of-a-kind)
              Glass Cozies

Hand felted merino wool necklace cords and wrist cords with embroidery thread. $42/each
Merino Cords
Please note that this year the fair will be held at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco right off the 9th St/Civic Center exit off the Bay Bridge.

See you there!

Blog? What blog?

Apparently I have a blog. My brain has mentioned this to me several times, but as usual I was crocheting, felting or watching endless amounts of instant-play Netflix while doing the crocheting and felting to hear exactly what it was saying. But just now it yelled rather rudely in my face. Geez!

Instead of writing that I will do a better job at keeping at my blog, I will post some pics of some new items that will be at Renegade this weekend!

I'm so excited about the show. I've likened it to going to craft camp before, so imagine that feeling when you were a kid, packing up, getting ready to go on an awesome weekend camp adventure where you get to see all your old friends! It's totally like that - minus the s'mores but there will be beer there. An adult craft camp :)

And one last thing....some cute l'il hanging lanterns I made, playing around with some cream wool that I handfelted. I used glass yogurt jars and made metal wire hangers. They would look equally cute filled with fresh cut flowers on your breakfast table.

New In the Shop

I'm proud to announce the newest members of the Pod family!
podlets

My new little podlets are now up in my Etsy shop and I just love them. They're modeled after sea urchins, come in 3 sizes and are similar in shape to my pinpods. I've been clustering some of them around my house, trying them in different scenarios and they really just add a touch of zen to anywhere I put them. Line them up in flowing trail, stacked like rocks at the beach or jumbled upon themselves....just lovely.

Each podlet can sit on either of it's ends, with one side featuring a contrasting color dot. They are stuffed plump with eco wool and fun to squish. I debuted them at the Renegade Fair and my boothmates and I loved watching people beeline to them, pick them up and instantly squish them. We started to notice more and more men doing this.....hmmm.......not sure what to think but I love knowing that they're "guy" friendly!

Anyways, have a peek and stay awhile. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Wrist Pods

I've ventured onto an out-of-the-way side road with this newer design:

I gotta say, I really love my Wrist Pods....(i know, i know, cue the dreamy background music)....but I really do!

I've worn each color out and about town and they look great dressed up or dressed down.

A lovely combination of airy and bold, light with structure:
and a beautiful embroidered detail on each that I'm crazy about:

Available in my shop in 4 different colors.

New In the Shop

Finally!! Something new in my Etsy shop!
I introduce my new Pinpods! These little guys were a big favorite at the show last month and they are really the cutest, most squishable little objet d'art with a purpose. Great for crafters to hold pins, a measuring tape, some thimbles or safety pins. My favorite part.....turn the pod over to show a brightly colored dot!

These will be in my Etsy shop tomorrow morning.
And just a side note as per my pieces, they are made to order so please allow a full week between purchase and ship date.
