Gee Cross Methodist Memorials

Gee Cross Methodists Church stands on land which was once part of Ralph Fold. Originally, Stockport Road Wesleyan Methodist Church and founded in 1882, when the Primitive Methodist Chapel on Joel Lane closed in 1969 the two congregations merged as Gee Cross Methodists Church.

This Memorial Stone was laid by Mrs John Blackwell of Godley July 28th 1888. This is six years after the church was founded and is by the entrance to the Sunday School.

These tablets were rescued from Joel Lane and re-erected here.

Warburton, Plant and Nash Memorials

These photographs were taken over two years ago by Tom Wigley close to Captain Clarke's Bridge and near the site of the former St George's Sunday School Rowing Club.

Nothing now remains of a War Memorial that was erected to commemorate rowing club members who were killed in the First World War.

This memorial stone shown was added to commemorate the three club members who died in the Second World War. It is understood that the original memorial was destroyed by vandalism and the Second World War memorial was fished out of the canal at some point and set into the ground along with the one commemorating that the ground had been given by the parents of Harry Warburton.

The Crown Pole

The "Crown Pole" is not a conventional signpost. The top eight fingers in descending order point to Audenshaw, Stalybridge, Dukinfield, Denton, Ashton-under-Lyne, Mossley, Longdendale (almost invisible here as it points directly at the camera) and Droylsden. The bottom finger, presumably added to give balance, merely points "South".


It was erected in 2002, along with others in Tameside, to commemorate the golden jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II.


On the market ground opposite Corporation Street, it replaced former flower tubs.

In January 2012 it was uprooted to be moved to an undisclosed site as Hyde Market underwent extensive renovations.

War Hill Cross

SJ 99 NE LONGDENDALE WAR HILL 4/87 Cross - G.V. II Cross. Medieval in origin but heavily restored in 1760 and 1897. Ashlar. Stepped circular ashlar plinth inscirbed "Restored in commemoration of the sixtieth year of the reign of Queen Victoria 1897". Octagonal shaft on moulded base has foliated capital and supports a cubical sundial with 3 copper faces. The front face is inscribed "hora pars vitae", the rear "and watch and pray time hastes away when time is done eternity comes on".

Big Tree 1983

The original "Big Tree", which stood at the corner of Lilly Street and Stockport Road by the Diamond Row reservoir, traditionally marked the boundary between Hyde and Gee Cross.

The reservoir was covered and the nearby Diamond Row cottages were demolished, to create an open space.

In 1983 a new "big tree" was planted as a memorial to sacrifices made in Northern Ireland and the Falklands.

Janet Howie's photograph was taken in September 1983; compare it with my own photograph from 2007 on Hyde Daily Photograph.

Potter Family Grave

This is the Potter family grave in the grounds of Hyde Chapel where lie buried the parents and grandparents of Beatrix Potter.

Beatrix was the daughter of Helen and Rupert and was born on 28th July 1866 at their London home. Her paternal grandfather, Edmund Potter was a successful cotton manufacturer with mills at Dinting, near Glossop, a radical MP, and a friend of Cobden and Bright. Her maternal grandmother, Jane Leech was from another prominent local Unitarian family, the Ashtons of Hyde and was the sister of Thomas Ashton of Pole Bank Hall and the first Mayor of Hyde. She married John Leech in 1832. They had eight children (two of whom died in infancy) and it was their daughter Helen who was Beatrix Potter's mother.

Werneth Low, circa 1990

I found this in a box of photographs recently. It was taken with a "panoramic" camera. I don't remember much about it, except that I only took one roll of film with it. Most of the results are not especially impressive but they include a couple of pictures of the Cenotaph or War Memorial on Werneth Low. This is scanned and cropped.

The date is around 1990, I think. I've posted the other surviving photo on Hyde Daily Photo.

Haughton Green Equitable Cooperative Society Ltd

This picture of a Haughton Green Equitable Cooperative Society Ltd anniversary plate was sent to us by Fred Anderson who tells us that the old coop was opposite the "tommy todd".

His family lived in Gibraltar Lane before moving to Gee Cross, and finally left the area in 1967.

Bennett Street War Memorial

The photograph of the War Memorial on Bennett Street dates from August 1999.

Stone with iron railings. Tall square-shaped shaft with cross motifs at the top and carved panels at the bottom. Stands on a square base which bears the inscription

"In affectionate memory of the men of Newton who gave their lives for their country and the cause of liberty 1914-1919".

and rolls of honour.

The railings have decorative top and bottom rails and spikes along the top.
