Big Screen Little Screen

There hasn't been much of Jake promoting Nightcrawler on the small screen yet with just less than two weeks till it's opening weekend, but Nightcrawler is doing a load of screenings on the big screen.

On Sunday night, there was a special screening of the movie at the Crosby St Hotel in New York City.

Jake was joined by the one of his fellow producers Tony Gilroy, who is the brother of writer/director Dan Gilroy.

Last week Nightcrawler had a screening in LA and was joined by co-star Rene Ruso and their director (and her husband) Dan Gilroy

Where Jake also met up with old friend Busy.

It will be interesting to see if Jake does do some more small screen time in the next ten days, or not.

All Taped Up

Some more interviews of Jake discussing Lou Bloom and Nightcrawler.

First is an interview with the CBC Radio show “Q with Jian Ghomeshi .  In the interview talks about " on privacy and voyeurism; shares how he got into the head of his sociopathic character; and why he's drawn to challenging and often darker roles." Jake also talks about why he decided to become a producer on the movie.

Jake sat down with IndieWire for a discussion of the movie and his character which resulted in several video clips.

This first clip shows off Jake's great memory as he reenacts the entire opening scene of Nightcrawler.

Fast Five Flicks

When Rotten Tomatoes sat down to interview Jake for Enemy they threw in a bit of a challenge name his five favorite films.

That's a tough call.

It's not just the movies Jake listed but what he said about them that made it interesting.

First - Searching for Bobby Fisher
"And just the story of father and son and the score is beautiful. It is inevitably one that I am always drawn to, and I think it's filled with hope but also like a real darkness and the beauty of childhood."
The darkness of childhood- interesting choice of words from Jake.
La Strada - Fellini's La Strada
" And it's also personally really resonant because my father said after he saw that movie, it was what made him want to make movies, and when I finally saw it when I was a teenager, I understood why. So it inevitably has a resonance beyond the brilliance of the movie itself.

So it was just something that was prominent in your family, growing up?

La Strada? Yeah when I was an infant we were just talking about it. [laughs] No, I just think it sort of tied to that. I mean, I just wonder sometimes if my father hadn't seen that movie and been so moved by it, you know, would he have met my mother? Would my sister have been born? You know, there's a lot of "would-haves" and eventually all of us have found our way into the movie business, so you know, that's just an interesting thing. And you know, you never know how a movie will inspire someone and how it will lead not just one life but many to come. Sort of an interesting idea"
Another interesting choice, because in the past Jake's talked more about musicals and Danny Kaye movies and his mother when talking about movies growing up. Has he ever talked about Fellini before?
And there's someone else that might have influence that choice.  Austin.  Austin's cinephile influence and he's  a huge fan of the Italian directors
Next he picked Jerry McGuire.  But he talked more about Fast Times than Jerry McGuire. Crowe's Fast Times was ground breaking and changed the teen movie genre.  While it was first R rated teen movie and it was most realistic of a teen movie.  Jake did talk about the infamous scene with Phoebe Cates and the bikini.  Yes that scene with Phoebe is one of the best known scene in movies. it is iconic and I don't think a guy under 40 (gay or straight) doesn't know that one.  (And that's true about the video tape thing -  Cameron  say that in an interview)

Fourth Jake picked the Goonies

"
Goonies, yeah. I mean maybe Goonies is better than Jerry Maguire, though I do love Jerry Maguire. Goonies is just like... I have no words for how awesome Goonies is. I happen to be working with Josh Brolin on this Everest movie I'm about to do, and I still geek out. You know, I want him to wear a headband in the Everest movie because it's such an amazing character choice. If I remember correctly I feel like he wore sweatpants over jeans in that movie? I'm pretty sure. I might be wrong about that. And that was a pretty dope character choice as well. Just incredible acting, and the scenes with Chunk still move me. And Butterfinger... Oh wait, no. Snickers? What is it, Snickers? My first crush was in Goonies too: Kerri Green. She was in Lucas. She was in Summer Rental. OK? Dude, she... Lucas is a very formidable... I had such a crush on her. Oh my god. If you see her in Lucas, you'd understand."

Wait a minute Jakey - what happened to Martha Plimpton?  You said she was your crush when your mom did Running on Empty - which around the same time. Did you just ditch her for the auburn curls as soon as you Kerri? Because honestly River seemed to be closer to who you were probably crushing on (and who wouldn't - it was River Phoenix!)

Speaking of auburn curls. Remember who loves the Goonies?  That's right Austy.

It's one of his favorite movies. They incorporated into OTH for him and he's tweeted about it.  I don't think it's Jake who geeked out with Josh over it, but more like Jake's Tall Texan who did.

And finally he picked, Woman of the Year, with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn.

And Jake gave this gem.

"I remember feeling very specifically about that movie that I love so much, which is how Spencer Tracy cracks his eggs while he's making an omelet. I will always crack my eggs like Spencer Tracy because of that movie.
[laughs]"

Whaddya Say....

More interviews for Enemy and new insights from Jake

From IndieWire:

I know you had a backstory for Detective Loki when you and Denis worked together on “Prisoners.” What kind of backstory did you have for Adam and Anthony?

Denis always wanted it to be two different people, and I always felt it more easy to play the people that we are in different contexts. Like you go to a party and you’re a different person when you come home. But who is that person at the party? What were you playing? Were you playing somebody? Were you aware of that? And I just think it’s a fascinating question. So to me it wasn’t about a backstory as much as observing in this case all the many kinds of parts of a personality that we meld into one––their feelings, their emotions, their interactions with people. Those are the personality things I was trying to ask myself. It was always subtle. It wasn’t like all of a sudden he’s wearing a blond wig.

And who knew Jake was a little arty- as in the paint sense

You say it’s easier to play the people we are in different contexts, but I feel like it would be harder. Isn’t there more of a chance to mix up their personalities?

I found it to be like watercolors, where it would easily bleed into the other area. But if I was working in oils or something, you could define the lines a lot more clearly; when you make a statement it’s there. I would constantly ask Denis if he could feel the difference. I could feel the difference and I didn’t know if he could see it, so he would be like Woah, too much! So I don’t know about harder or easier, it was just different. It’s the same medium but you’re working with a different composite material.

Speaking with Salon.com  he shared this:

And then I decided, because of what he talked about, the idea of identity, the idea of sort of the exploration of intimacy, sexuality, connections of all kinds with yourself, with other people, commitment — all these things — to yourself, to a relationship. I decided not read the the book because I felt like it would somehow hinder this exploration. Sometimes the literary form makes it hard to interpret something cinematically because you get caught up in the things you love so much about the words and I really actually didn’t want to get caught up and I knew I would because I knew the script was already different from the book.

Talking about the technical aspect of movie making:

Right, a lot of people complain about that in other movies.

Yeah, a lot of people say, “I don’t like that. I want to really interact with someone.” And I do like interacting with other people so much, other actors. Watching another actor do amazing work, for me, is my other favorite thing. But I never realized how much I love the technical aspects of moviemaking. You feel like you’re helping make a movie even more when you’re doing those things because so much of moviemaking — the filmmaking process — is so technical.

Funny how the son of a directors and screenwriters has never mentioned this before - may be it's that other fella who write and directs that might have made the difference.

Jake also sat down to talk with the Screen Actors Guild in a 90 minute Q & A back in November

Talking about One's Enemy

While Jake is working in Italy there is still a movie to promote and earlier this year Jake went up to Toronto to sit down with well known Canadian talk show host George Stroumboulopoulos to talk about Enemy

Here are some of the clips:

A theme that both Jake and Denis have touched on is the intimacy of film making

and struggling with intimacy

Jake went on to talk about working with people who inspire him

And George ask Jake about his Electric Company connection

In addition to Jake's Vanity Fair interview  he sat down with the CBC's Q guest host Brent Bambury to talk about Enemy.  Denis earlier last fall said in an interview with Q that the movie really "gets into his leading man's real mind -- calling it a a documentary about the subconscious of Jake Gyllenhaal --- something the actor identifies with to a certain extent."

Jake call it more collective -"In a way, it's really about the exploration of all of our unconscious."   But which is it subconscious or unconscious there Jakey?

Rule Breaker

Jake recently sat down for an interview for No. 7 Hollywood Issue of Man of the World magazine.

In the interview he talks about balancing the personal and professional life.

"It's taken me a long time in my career to realize that you can't be good at everything. You sometimes have to give something up. There are limits."

Is that one reason his work scheduled isn't as busy as it seems? Could it be that there is something more important that Jake wants to make sure he's being his best?

Again he talks about the movie business and personal life.

"The movie business is largely just stuffing actors in this place, and this place and this place."But it's time in your life that you can't have back."

Kind of sounds like he doesn't want to miss those special moments. Sounds like what happens not making movies is way more important. Not what  most single unattached 30 something men would say. Most would be focused on work. Oops sorry he's not unattached - cause you there's models not to be seen with. Wait - uhh yeah funny he's worked more day since being "attached" but when on a break Jake was no where to be seen.  Hmmm...funny that.

"I do care about the stories people want to tell. But then I want to get back to my honest self for the directors I work with."

In the pictures for the issue, Jake is shown with showing off what's on his chain. And usually you don't wear your own ring on your own chain. Especially when it's bigger than any of your fingers.  Is that part of getting back to his honest self?

Jake goes on to speak about many of the roles he's played.

"Many of the movies I've loved the most have had similar processes about rules being broken and bent. "I love that."

Will he be a rule breaker off screen now?

Past, Present, Future

In Jake's interview with the LA Times in addition to the comments about family and reflecting on his life at 30 and where he sees himself at 60. (Family, kids)

He did something he doesn't do too very often , he spoke about Heath.  And with great admiration.

"I work with actors, and I've made a conscious effort to work with people who are more talented than me, because I think they bring out your best work. Heath was always full of massive charisma and great skill, and he really took his time to listen to himself and find that. And I have great admiration for that."

Heath left an impression on Jake personally and professionally that he will carry with him for the rest of his life.

Did anyone notice what Jake left out of this interview?  He talks about a future,  but notice he never mentions who he is sharing it with, and  mention of  the word wife.

So who is he going to have this messy family with?

Live in LA

Austin was back in LA and very much his charming self on KTLA this morning talking about not only the River River, but Beautiful Boy too. An being The CW affiliate they had to kick it off with a little bit about OTH.

Austin gives a little fashion commentary about the KTLA crew, pretty much confirms that the baker's dozen is it for OTH, shares a clip of him in Beautiful Boy, and invites everyone to join him for a ride this Sunday. He does say he wants to shoot the gun off as Grand Marshal.

See what your impressions are when he's talking about OTH.

Austin's sporting some arm charm too.

It's Two Wheel Tuesday so get out and ride.

Of course some OMGers confused it with Sneaker/Sandal Saturday and didn't get too far.

Bird Booze Evolution?

Wild Turkey - - Grey Goose - - Plastered Pelican

Sounds like a drink menu for a theme bar called Empty Nest (Park Overall could play the sassy bartender)
Who's that lucky duck who hanging with him out behind those Ray -Bans? And check out the long arm of that bouncer.

Today's F stands for Flashback

(a little fuzzy in the beginnning, but the interview is all there) -

Something for Austin F'in Friday, to help get ready to see him back on the small screen.

Because as everyone knows by now.

"Exclusive: Austin Nichols Relocates to 'One Tree Hill'

John from Cincinnati is moving to Tree Hill. Ex-Cincinnati star Austin Nichols is joining the cast of One Tree Hill, sources confirm to me exclusively. He'll play an indie movie producer who expresses interest in turning Lucas' first novel into a film. And because OTH loves its triangles, he'll also share a past connection with Peyton! My OTH mole describes Nichols' gig as "heavy recurring," which I'm pretty sure means we're going to be seeing a lot of him."
EW.com

One Tree Hill airs in the U.S. Monday nights 9 pm EST on the CW Network. (check your local listings)

So the questions are this:

1) How many episodes before Austin loses his shirt in a scene?

2) How long before his character mentions directors Hal Ashby, John Ford, or Sam Fuller?

3) How much do you bet that will make him The CW's vision of Hipster cool, ironic misunderstood, but with a dream of doing it his way.

And the most importantly

4) What does an indie producers hair look like?

And looks like a some Austin Monday's will be in order . What a way to start the week. Don't think any will be any protesting to some Austin bookends for the work week.

Austin with long time friend and now co-star Sophia Bush.

Now you see it .... now you don't
