Two More Beauties for Sherry

The first of Sherry's two quilts that I'm sharing today is a pattern called Arboretum by Saginaw Street Quilts.  Sherry started this quilt in a workshop a number of years ago, and decided to change up the size and layout to suit her needs.

Sherry chose the Zephyr pantograph and I love the feel of the wind blowing across the leaves.

Sherry is always drawn to fabric that includes text, and I love how the border and the backing tied together.

The second quilt started out to be one thing but ended up being another.  Three Churn Dash blocks, a little applique and a fitting pantograph make for a simple but elegant quilt.

I love the "Pieces of My Heart" pantograph.  I have had the chance to stitch it out on all different kinds of quilts and I always like the result.

Our Hearts Will Go On

Reneta made this beautiful rendition of the "Our Hearts will Go On" pattern from the Fabric Addict.  The pattern is a fun take on a traditional Storm at Sea block/ Clever color placement allows the two hearts to appear.

I

Reneta selected the "Zephyr" pantograph and I think it compliments the top well.  I love using Superior's Magnifico thread on batiks, and a light grey/turquoise was just right.

Nina's Labyrinth

I recently had the pleasure of quilting this beauty for Nina.  The pattern is called Labyrinth by Calico Cottage.  This pattern had been around awhile but this is first one to come into my studio.

Nina selected the Zephyr panto and a charcoal Magnifico thread.

Nina does not like to waste fabric and was creative in her approach to the quilt borders and pieced backing strip.   Nina did a great job measuring and pressing when assembling the backing as it was as flat as a solid piece of fabric.  What makes the achievement even more impressive is that it was a mix of flannel and cotton!   (Normally I wouldn't recommend this much piecing in a backing because the chance of working in a little extra fabric here or there and causing a pleat to form in the quilting process is a clear and present danger.)

I'm sure the lucky recipients who find this under their Christmas tree will be thrilled!

CIty Slicker for the Dorm Room

I made this quilt for daughter #1 as a grad present for her new dorm room at the University of Manitoba.  This quilt has been in the making for a while, but residence move in day of September 3rd was my deadline.

I asked for Kyla's input on this quilt along the way.  She had suggested that she could just take the original City Slicker quilt that I made when we were designing the pattern for Highway 10 Designs.  I wasn't quite ready to part with that one, and I wanted to make something just for her, I selected a jelly roll in some of her favorite colors and paired it with the icy blue background.

Kyla chose the Zephyr panto.  I used Quilter's Dream Puff batting so that washing and drying in the dorm would be nice and easy.  I used a variegated Fantastico thread called Misty Morn on top and Bottom Line blue in the bobbin.

I love to personalize quilts for my clients when given the opportunity, and I wanted to do the same for Kyla.  I wrote her name in one row of the panto.  Subtle, but present.

I wanted to make a couple of matching throw pillows to send along and I was lucky to have an extra bit of my Stonehenge backing once the quilt was finished, so I found some small batting pieces and loaded the pillow fronts and just kept on quilting the panto over them.

It was a close call but they fit!

This pillow was made from the little pieces of jelly roll strip that are left over from cutting out the quilt.

The second one was made from bits and pieces from the quilt and my stash.

And here you see it where it will be living for the next 8 months.  City Slicker is the perfect sized quilt for a standard dorm room bed.  This one is a twin XL.

Cheri's Quarter Sections

Cheri made this sunny version of the Quarter Sections quilt by Highway 10 Designs.  Instead of using a specific collection of fat quarters, Cheri collected fat quarters during her travels to various quilt stores.  Cheri farmed for many years so the "Quarter Section" theme was very meaningful to her.

Cheri chose the "Zephyr" panto and I think it gives the feeling of the wind blowing across the prairie.

I love how Cheri pieced extra blocks into the back.  A nice surprise when you turn the quilt over!

This quilt just makes me smile.  Perfect summer colors.  Great job Cheri!

Quarter Sections

I recently attended a family wedding and I am proud to say that the gift was this version of our Quarter Sections pattern - made and quilted by me and ready in time for the big day!

I wasn't familiar with the bride and groom's colour scheme in their house, but I thought that this neutral palette would fit in nicely in most modern homes.

I used 16 fat quarters and about 2m of border and binding fabric all from my stash.  Quarter Sections comes together quickly for those times when you want to make something but don't have a lot of time.

I used a new panto on this one called "Zephyr" by Lorien Quilting.

I love the photo above, it really makes me think of the aerial view of the prairies that gave the pattern it's name.

I am excited to report that the paper copies of our new Highway 10 Designs pattern are packaged up and ready to go. Available in the Etsy store or from me personally is you are local!
