Goats in Pajamas

Reneta made this darling baby quilt using the Kidding Around - Goats in Pajamas pattern from Art East Quilting Company.  Reneta made three blocks and adapted the layout to allow space for adding the baby's name.

I love the cute flannel fabrics that Reneta chose for the goat's pajamas!

Reneta requested my freehand all over woodgrain design for the quilting.  It is one of my favorite designs to quilt out and I think it looks good here.

Sylvia’s Block on the Month

This quilt was made by Sylvia.  Her sewing group was following a Block of the Month pattern. and she made changes along the way that better suited her taste.

Sylvia asked for a simple meander that wasn't too small in scale.  I hadn't quilted an all over meander in ages so this was fun for me.

Rip Snip And Drop

I made this quilt from the results of a fun little game that we played at the Manitoba Prairie Quilters.  We were each told to bring one yard of fabric (and to make sure we liked it as we would be coming back home with half of it.)   Liz then led us in the One Yard Fabric Exchange Game called  "Fold It - Snip It - Rip It - Drop It - Pass It" as explained here by Heirloom Creations.

Above are the fabrics that I came home with.  I was really pleased as they were quite well coordinated compared to what some others ended up with. I brought the darkest blue on the left.  I knew I wanted to make a baby/child's quilt to donate to our guild's charity program, but bright novelty prints are lacking in my stash.  What is a girl to do?  Phone a friend!  My friend Eileen is always willing to let me peek into her "fabric pantry" when I am stuck.  I hit the jackpot.  I gained the fabrics and one orphan block that you see below.

I looked for ideas for some scrappy patterns online and drew this idea out to match the fabric sizes that I had available, and the Winnie the Pooh block worked perfectly in the middle.

I quilted it with a quick freehand patten and added a donation label.

This was a fun game and we had a huge number of quilts donated to our charity program as a result.  Win Win!

Vintage Grandmother's Flower Garden

Susan brought this wonderful vintage Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt.  It is entirely hand pieced!  Susan told me that she stopped working on it in 1981 when she changed jobs and picked it up again during her extra time at home during COVID.

It was fun to see Susan remembering what was originally made out of the these great fabrics.

Susan left the quilting plan up to me.  I decided that  simple custom quilting of freehand continuous curves would keep the vintage feel.

Riding Mountain Memories

Myrna made this wonderful quilt that features printed photos of her hometown of Riding Mountain, Manitoba.  On the body of the quilt I used my freehand topographic quilting design to add a nice texture.

I did minimal quilting on the 4 photos.  I stitched in the ditch around the blocks and followed the outlined of the main elements in each of the photos.

Myrna also provided this pieced backing with a couple of panels and more coordinating fabrics that she used on the front.

Heavy Metal

Marion was very resourceful in making this quilt.  Marion bought the centre Stonehenge Heavy Metal panel by Northcott, and for the majority of the rest of the quilt, Marion used a friend's leftovers that had made a number of quilts from this fabric line.  No specific pattern, just a lot of creativity.

Marion asked for simple quilting, and I suggested my freehand topographic meander.  It added a nice  texture and kept the manly feel of the quilt that Marion was going for.

Lone Star

Wow it has been a month since I sat down at the computer to share any of the quilts that have been through my studio - time to remedy that!
Dorothy made this lovely Lone Star quilt with a beautiful selection of batik fabrics.  Dorothy left the quilting design up to me and I decided on freehand "3's and E's"

Dorothy opted for one of the wide backs that I keep on hand - this being a very pretty blue Stonehenge.

I know Dorothy was planning on giving this quilt to a friend who was retiring, and I'm sure she will be just thrilled with this beautiful quilt.

Pretty in Pink

Fern brought this pretty quilt top for finishing.  Fern's sister pieced the top, so Fern didn't know too much about it when she called me.  I was surprised to see that many of the angles were made with a folded edge technique that left a lot of 3D/floppy edges.

I felt the only way that I could successfully quilt the top was to do a freehand design from the front.  If I were to attempt a pantograph from the back my machine foot would inevitably get caught in the loose edges and create chaos.

I doodled some different designs and Fern liked the "3's and e's" so I was happy to proceed with that.  I had to be very careful and did flip the fabric a few times which required some ripping and fixing, but overall it went really well.

Fern also opted to have the binding completed by Marion -  a talented quilter I have been working to offer machine binding services to my clients who request it.  All that is left is for Fern to enjoy her quilt.

Cindy's Wonderful Woodland

Cindy made this fabulous Wonderful Woodland quilt as a gift for a baby that will be arriving soon to friends in Japan.  What a perfect choice to send a little bit of Canada over to a new baby from its "Canadian Grandma".

I did my freehand woodgrain quilting pattern as I love the texture it adds and I like to plan my stitchhing path to avoid stitching through any cute little eyeballs!

Cindy chose a lovely grey fireside for the backing and this is a super sweet and cuddly quilt.

I also had the opportunity to quilt up this stunning digitally printed panel for Marion.  The panel is called "Winter's Wings" and is from Hoffman fabrics.  Marion wanted some simple but denser quilting for this one and she chose the Soho pantograph.
