Silhouettes

Have I ever told you about the silhouettes I have? I think not since after this post so many of you asked about them. I'm not sure if it's just a southern thing but round these parts, us mom have silhouettes done of our children. If we are rich or have rich parents, we have an oil painting commissioned as well. So I've heard.

A few years ago, Lena Bengtson was coming to a local children's shop. You had to book your appointment way in advance if you wanted an appointment. I was never able to get one, always calling too late and she was booked. She is like a real, live silhouette arteest. And I wanted her...bad. This is taken straight from her website:

A degree in fine art with an emphasis in portrait painting has given Lena the skill needed to capture an exact likeness. The detailed cuttings are done in the European embellished style. Lena has cut silhouettes in 15 states and 3 European countries.
This is not your preschool overhead projector silhouette. I wanted to have my boy's profile captured by Lena and I was lucky enough to secure an appointment this time.

Little did I know that a month or two later when our day had arrived I would have a decision to make. The business that my husband had bought was not going well. At all. So, I could use what little cash we had to pay for these frivolous, unnecessary works of art or skip the sitting. Now all you Dave Ramsey Gazelle intense folks don't get all crazy on me but, I chose to use our cash for the silhouettes. I took that $54 out of our grocery money and lived to tell about it. At least I knew enough not to put it on a credit card.
My boys sat for Lena and she was wonderful. Y'all, she sits with a pair of scissors and black paper and just stares at the child and cuts! No tracing, no drawing--just cutting without hardly even looking at the paper! It only took 7-8 minutes and the boys simply looked at books.
It was the right decision for me. I have not regretted having spent that money on those precious works of art. There are some things in life that you only have one chance to capture.
Now, if you have the funds, you can go to Lena's website and find out about submitting a photo and she can create a silhouette for you. They are SO detailed! Or, you can do what Linda or Molly or Leah did and make them yourself--but no matter what, consider having silhouettes made of your children, you will not regret it!

  • I shared what I compromised my grocery money for. Do you have something unnecessary that is so important to you that you would sabotage your grocery budget? Fess up, I know you do.

These are beautiful, and well worth the $54, I think. Good call.

I can't imagine what my kids' silhouettes would look like if I tried cutting them out like that! More like scary Halloween decorating than a keepsake, I'm afraid. :)

My parents had one done of me when I was younger in Disney World. On Main Street. The guy did the same thing! He just stared and cut. He never looked at the paper. It was weird. I remember being so fascinated that I asked to stay and watch him. What kid does that? Hey, look the Magic Kingdom is right outside. What do you want to do? What? Stay inside and watch a guy cut out paper?
Surely this was a sign of my future strangness.
BTW, $54 well spent! I love them! SO what if you had to eat Mac and cheese or ramen for a week? Worth it!

Last year I had the opportunity to purchase about $3500 worth of various trims and crafty bits for less than $40. It was a once in a lifetime chance to build up a stash to end all stashes and I simply had to buy it. Unfortunately we were broke at the time so grocery money was my only option. I explained it all to my sweet husband who I must say is either the most supportive and understanding husband in the world or the world's biggest enabler because he agreed that I couldn't let this opportunity pass me by. I have used that stash on so many projects this year and still have loads left over. I rationalized that I could always sell it online and make a lot more if I had to part with it. It was a tough week of eating breakfast for dinner but we survived and I have not once regretted it.

I think there is no possible way you could have made any other decision than to have the silhouettes done. I agree with Julia, Good call.

I'm not a mama, but at soon as my surrogate is ready I'm gonna get me a baby (ala Holly Hunter in that Savannah movie - can't think of the darn real movie title - you know the one). And, then....I'm gonna get me a silhouette done! I've always thought they were timeless and so sweet!

Wow, that really is amazing!

I am horrible at spending grocery money... so much so that I should probably be spending more time with Dave Ramsay, than the Nester ;)

Crafts, fantastic shoes, clothes for the kids, decor for the house, a pedicure....the list goes on and on. Lately I have been blowing it on anything. I am quite naughty. Love your silhouettes.

hee hee...girl, I love you....
hmmm...what have I blown it on...I'll have to think about it...xoxo, but the thing about balancing the budget is every once in a while you TOTALLY need to do things like this or you miss the moments that take your breath away...like this one, for you!!

I recently bought my husband a Longhorns Football t-shirt with a few of our grocery dollars...that he worked so hard for. And there is the occasional white chocolate mocha....

I am so excited about this post b/c I am hoping to do these as gifts for my sister this year for Christmas. This has given me even more ideas. Thanks

this is still a secret, I sabotaged my grocery money (or dress money for a formal event we are going to in 2 weeks eeks!) on having my blog designed!!(the design is not done yet) don't tell... husband doesn't know yet...maybe I'll tell him after eating Halloween candy (the sugar in his system may help!) :o)

These are just beautiful! Thanks for sharing the idea...I will check out her website too! Ah, the grocery store money...if there is something I want to save for, I actually take an extra $20 out of my debit each time I am at the store. It's a good way to have a little extra cash for things such as silhouettes when I might need it! :-)

Gosh, I remember having silhouettes done of me and my sister when we were little, and I LOVED looking at them. I think your children will too!
I couldnt really take away from my grocery money since I only spend like $50 a week, but I think if I did take away from the food budget it would be for something for my house! :)

My mom had a silhouette done of me when I was little. I remember sitting on the stool while the lady cut the black paper. It probably took her 15 minutes. I just can't imagine having talent like that! I can't think of anything I'd need to sacrifice grocery money over...but with Christmas coming I'm sure there's going to be something.

I think it was money well spent. They are priceless.

I had my son't silhouette done when he was about 3-it was a set up exactly like yours where the artist was booked for a children's clothing shop and it only took a few moments. My son is 22 and I still have that dear little silhouette out on one of my end tables at all times! I love it.

We also had one done on a visit to Disney World and that one is precious, too.

Truly a lost art. By the way, I am a Northern Girl!! teehee

Thanks for the link to that silhouette artist! I am always looking for gift ideas for my niece and nephew. They have everything, but I don't think they have these! yay!

We've gone meatless for a month before but I think that was for Christmas presents that we really should not have purchased. LOTS AND LOTS OF SOUPS AND BEANS!!! BTW . . . I would have taken it out of the emergency fund and put it back in parts. I'm bad about that.

I made a fun silhouette for my husband for father's day.

Love them! I have Lena silhouettes of my girls too - she is amazing to watch in action.

I think it was a good spend. While the groceries would have been gone in a day or two, you'll have these for a lifetime.

you won't believe this- an artist from DISNEY was at our fair two years ago and he used the same phenomenally incredible scissors and black paper, takes less than a minute to make an intricate piece of art technique. and it was amazing! and, a group brought him in and sponsored it, so it was FREE. and, we got to take home TWO copies of each sil. along with the original! whew! what a deal! and they're still some of my favorite things in the house- little delicate eyelashes and all.

They are beautiful. You should read about the history of silhouettes. Food for the eyes or food for the stomach, sometimes the eyes need the feast. My husband and I have a weird setup-I pay for all the food, he doesn't care what it cost, so no saboutoge.

Alyce said...

I'd probably buy shoes or purses!
I have always wanted to have silhouettes of my kids. What I really want is an oil painting of them. I have seen these companies advertise where you can send in a photo and they'll do an oil from that. Pricey. I was surprised that you only had to pay $54. I had to laugh at the Dave Ramsey comment though..hahaha..his books are stacked on my nightstand (they give my lamp some height)

i had ALWAYS ( i mean my oldest is 3), but always wanted hand cut silhouetes! can you believe we had them done at disney world this sept?!? they came in awesome frames too. i would have sacrificed more than grocery money, and we're davers too!

Very neat! It was $54. Had it been $5,000 then maybe it would be a different story. But you know what ..... life is short. Sometimes you just gotta live a little. :)

Thank you so much for Lena's website! I had my daughter's silhouette done by Lena back in 2003 at toy store on East Blvd. I wanted to get my son's silhouette done by her, but I could not read her signature on the pic. I thought her first name was Tena. So I could not find her info anywhere.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for solving this problem for me! I am thrilled! You have made my day! Lena's work is simply amazing and worth every penny!

I laughed like crazy when I read this post. We ARE southern (Birmingham, AL). We ARE NOT rich, but........ I did have oil paintings done of all three of my girls at the age of five. Each girl is wearing an heirloom dress and barefoot (did I mention we're southern?) I just got the last one back from the artist. We saved and planned for them. I'll cherish them always!!!!

I,too, have the silhouettes of my boys done by an artist! They were worth every penny! It was amazing to watch the son /grandson (I forgot which one!!!) of Carew Rice carefully shape their little heads and faces from black paper!!

I love the silhouettes! What a wonderful thing to spend $54 on. If it comes down to it rice & beans, beans & rice. Right!

Those are fantastic...worth the 54 bucks. You can always eat peanut butter and beans for one week! LOL...but you'll have these forever!

Thanks for the link to her site.

I had my two kids done at a place on Main Street in Disneyland! Yes, she was a real arteest, as you say, and she sat there with a pair of scissors and did it while staring at them. It's amazing! She did two large ones, and two mini ones to turn into Christmas ornaments. They came framed in cute oval frames too! Money well spent!

You made the right choice. They're only little for such a short time. You don't want to regret that you didn't have it done. After all, it's only money. But some things just won't wait. Mimi

i love silouettes! my mom had them made of my brother and i every year for over 15 years. they look stunning all over the wall in her formal living room. i've started teh same tradition with my girls. we get them cut by Karl Johnson at the NC State Fair every year. He does a phenomenal job. I have 9 so far (I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old.) I'm telling you... it's an obsession. Money well spent, IMO!

Good for you! I am totally in agreement: capturing memories is well worth the grocery indiscretion. I just paid a hefty sum (to me) to have our family videos changed over from VHS to DVD. Was it in our budget? No, but I would be a very sad, regretful granny someday if I didn't do it and instead lost those precious memories to time and the inevitable tape deterioration...

You are so kind to mention my silhouettes in your post. While they are nowhere near as intricate and lovely as yours, they still honestly make me sigh with happiness that I was actually able to do them and I love that this is something that will be handed down through the years. Honestly, thay are so easy to do, which reminds me that I owe some of my readers, who asked, a quick tutorial. Thanks for the reminder, and for sharing your little ones' sweet silhouettes.

Have a great weeekend,
Linda

Thank you for sharing this site with us! I've been wanting to have a silhouette done of my daughter for some time now. I never dreamed that they could look so wonderful though! Ordering one right now!

Before Amazon, I would have messed up more than my grocery budget for books!

Thankfully now, I can put them into a wish list and manage my book buying a little better!

My parents had a Disney silhouette cut (of myself) on a family trip when I was about 18. It had "Disney World" written on it and some decorative shading, etc which I never liked. Just recently I figured out how to scan it into Photoshop and remove all the objectionable stuff, leaving just the silhouette. I then printed it out on cardstock and framed it. The great thing is that I can print out extras for my mom and daughters so they'll have a copy too. It's so nice to be able to look at that 18 year old profile and reminisce about a firm jawline :)

I would have totally done the same!! I have wanted my kids silhouettes done for a while, gosh now the overhead projector just doesn't seem as appealing to me!:)
- yours look great!

That is something to treasure! A few days of eating leftovers never hurt anyone. I think it was a great use of money, considering it is something you will keep forever!

When my family was in Disney World in 1997, there was a silhouette artist there, and I had to have my kids' done. That was going to be my souvenir from the trip. I couldn't, though, justify the money for the frames. Well, I kicked myself for that from the moment we arrived back in Pennsylvania. We didn't have internet then, but I somehow made many phone calls and ordered the frames from a store in Disney World. Not only did I spend time and money on the phone calls, but I had to pay for shipping!

I still have my daughters silhouettes from 1st grade that were given to me on Mother's Day. My daughters are 33 & 32 now. I have them hanging in my bedroom and they keep asking me why I hang on to those. I just smile and remember the look on their faces when they gave them to me. I love them and so happy the teacher made them for all the mothers. Memories are important.

My nest door neighbor did her two boys and my two girls silhouettes when they were 7 and 11. They are now 40 and 44 and the silhouettes hang in my living room and they are so precious to me. A reminder of a sweet time in our lives. I'm glad you made the decision to have your boys' done. You won't regret it.
