Always Last's antidotes review in MRR

"if Fat Wreck Chords ever opens up a Malaysian office, then Always Last ought to be the first signing. They have managed to distill that signature "Fat Sound" (i.e Bad Religion filtered through the lens of NOFX, ending up like a cross between No Use For A Name, Good Riddance, and Propagandhi), sing in perfect english, and faithfully reproduce the variety melodic pop-punk styles that early randy did so well. Always Last, of course, might scoff at the likes of Fat. The lyrics and liner notes are staunchly independent/diy-'til-death, and the record is co-released by three different Malaysian labels (i just picked one here to list arbitrarily). Personally, methinks it's pretty excellent all around (a little off-key singing notwithstanding), though its always trifle odd to think of the, ahem, reach of cultural imperialism that such western sounds (and ideas) can be reproduced wholesale. but there you go, that's internationalism for you!!" plagiarism is punk rock, NOT!

Today we got an email from one of the punk labels we looked up upon, BYO (Better Youth Organization) records. We did some mistakes and they notify us. This is our email of apology and also the email from them. We expose these emails for the sole purpose of lesson learned for us and our friends to take notes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nervhous Records!

Came across this while looking online: http://www.myspace.com/punkrockbowlingtournament

We are BYO records, you may know us because you stole our event, including our artwork, to stage your own copycat bowling tournament!?! Do you think this is ok? It is not ok to steal other people's idea's, art, music or anything else. PLEASE STOP IT NOW! DO NOT USE ANYTHING FROM BYO without express written permission. That permission, now that you have stolen from us, will not be granted easily. We have been doing this for many, many years and while things may be different in your community, culture, country, in the punk rock world that we come from, we do not steal or use other people's work without asking.

Do not take this lightly. I see you are doing a show with NO USE FOR A NAME. They are friends of ours, as are most of the punk bands around the world. Do you think they would like to know that you steal other people's work? Do you think this would help them decide if they want to travel to your country to work with people who cannot be trusted!? You can be sure they will not.

Take some advice from someone that has been doing this for over 30 years, if you want to run a punk rock label/band/zine/promoter, whatever, you better learn to be honest and trustworthy in this community or no one will work with you.

I hope you have some sort of explanation for this theft!

I'm waiting to hear it!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Shawn, it's a shock to get an email from BYO! Unfortunately it's a negative one. Anyway, we would like to apologize for using the name and the artwork from BYO's annual punk rock bowling. Actually what we did was just a very small gathering of friends who are active in the label and honestly, it was less than 20 persons just went for bowling. It was really nothing big as what you guys did.

So we just simply took the name, obviously because there's no other name we think is suitable, and we thought it was a general name for an event, plus the fact that we are all punks too :) And to tell you the truth, the event was just a one-off thing, not annually or as frequently as BYO did. RM20 fee for each participants were to pay the rental of bowling alleys for each person to bowl.

About the flyers, the intention was just to make the bowling/gathering more exciting and just for fun, nothing more than that. We have to let you know that we DID NOT make any single money out of that, it was just an unofficial gathering. Our friend who did the design who used your artwork is just a beginner in photoshop and image editing and we actually didn't know that the artwork was stolen from BYO. We should have checked first.

We all have very much respects for BYO for the struggles you people went through, the effort you guys did for the hc/punk scene worldwide, the always awesome records you guys put out and not to forget your band YOUTH BRIGADE. You all are very inspiring to us and we hope you won't stop being awesome.

Please accept our sincere apologies, and we promise and guarantee you that this sorts of thing will never happen again, at least not from us.

Hi Nizang,

Ok, don't sweat it, everyone makes mistakes. Just, in the future, even for something that's just for friends, if you wanna use someone else's idea and then you're gonna put it up on the web, always best to drop an e-mail and ask if it's ok. That way you avoid something like this happening. Anyhow, good luck with everything you are doing. Maybe we'll make it over there next year. We are probably taking a surf trip end of May to Indonesia, so who knows, we may do some shows in Asia.

Thanks,

Shawn

distro stuff review #5: SMZB 10 years of Rebellion

SMZB ’10 Years of Rebellion’ CDR (Core Rock Moon)

SMZB, the first punk band from Wuhan, China was scheduled to play in KL in 2003 but they had problems with visas. This 12 tracks CD collects their hits throughout their 10 years as a band. Musically, something like Rancid mixed up with the melody of Social Distortion. The addition of tin whistle gives the songs a strong Chinese feel whereas bagpipes makes some of the songs sounds Scottish. This is the Malaysian pressing released by Core Rock Moon. Ricecooker Shop used to carry the original version by Maybe Mars Records, for those who missed to buy it make sure you buy this version. corerockmoon@gmail.com

distro stuff review #4-Full Pledge Munkees 'Pick it Up!' CD

Full Pledge Munkees ‘Pick it Up!’ (Nyaring)

Ska punk with horns from Singapore. Fuck the first and third tracks play on and on in my head, the lyrics are so jiwang karat but this band make jiwang karat lyrics cool again. This band went to many places around Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak all through out 2007 to promote this album on the ‘Kawan tour’ along with Plague of Happiness. Nyaring Records, 70 Jalan 9/5, Taman Air Biru, 81700 Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia or pushkepek@hotmail.com or www.nyaring.com

Notes: Band featured in ROTTW March '09

distro stuff review #3 -Nuisance Drilled 'All is well, Euphoric ending'

Nuisance Drilled on this recording consists of 3 members of Sarjan Hassan and 1 member from Banzai 606 which both are thrash core bands. But if you think this is another thrashcore band, you might be slightly wrong. They're more towards sludgecore with rocking guitar solos and vocals screaming as if he's seeing ghosts or maybe suffering unbearable pain. Hahah!

This CDEP contains 6 tracks with samples from 'Enam Jahanam' movie between each song. A very 'artistic' and 'conceptual' EP. Come in digipack with the frontman's artwork scattered all over the inlay.

Final sample is a revenge conversation from the movie, probably showing the revenge of the band after waiting too long to release this CD.

stuff review 2-Half-Asleep 'self-titled' cdr

Half-Asleep ‘self-titled’ ep cdr (self-released) @ KL Indie Fest 2008

When Blink 182 just came out with enema of the state album, I was hooked to it but never really memorize the lyrics or anything like that. They’re just a bunch of crazy minded rock stars that wants attention from the people who follow the music industry. In later years, there were many drummers who tried to copy travis barker’s style of drumming. And not just that, they even dress like this guy and even had that TV tattoo on their stomach with non-permanent marker I guess! This is one of the bands that have the drumming style like Travis Barker. Every time they play, all eyes will be stuck on the drummers move and some even took video of the drummer only for this band without the other members. Hahahha! Anyway, I’m such a sucker for poppunk and I love this band. The drumming is like blink-182 but musically, they sound like a lot of big poppunk bands that have heavy emo touch in their songs and lyrics. Quite cool for someone who were born in the 80’s like me. There are also songs about hating poseur emo kids, and the whole punk kids thingy. But I don’t quite agree with the line ‘we are the kids who hate government’. I guess most punk kids don’t hate government, there are just certain (and many) policies, rules and decisions that the government made that are injustice, exploiting that shouldn’t exist that these kids are against. Anyway, I love most of the songs on this CD and some of the songs even being featured on ‘K.A.M.I’ TV series. The version I got was the first pressing and the front cover is colored using color pencil while the inside inlay was written using hand and I find that cool. But I saw the latest version of this CD is using computerize design which is a turn off. But yeah, again…who the heck wants to buy a poppunk CD with hand-writing design??

Notes: First pressing using color pencils!

stuff review 1-sally faerie 'dreamlands under' cdr

Sally Faerie ‘Dreamlands Under’ cd-r (Record Lusuh)

In 1999, when I put out a couple of issues of Mosh zine, Su posted me her zine, "Punctual" for trade. We kept in touch. We met couple of times in Kuantan and Shah Alam, I followed and watched her jamming with her band in 2001. The band still active till now and late last year, I got their CDs.

SF plays poppunk/indie pop the 90’s style with strong Weezer influence. The first track ‘One Day’ once appeared in ‘Peachy Little Secrets’, a compilation by Fruit Records (the label who put out Mocca CDs in Singapore). The third track is having the most ‘punkish’ sound, and it’s a malay number entitled ‘Bukan Maksudmu’. I watched this band playing last New Year ’s Eve in KL, and they did a cover version of a Cindy Lauper song and also ‘Bukan Maksudmu’ and I found myself singing along. The closing track the instrumental version of the first song, but they only remove the main vocals and remain the backing vocals. Certainly my cup of tea!
