Three breweries medal at 2016 U.S. Open

Boiler Brewing of Lincoln, Nebraska Brewing of LaVista/Papillion, and Scratchtown Brewing of Ord were all medal winners this past week at the 2016 U.S. Open Beer Championship. Nearly 5,000 entries were judged at this international competition with the final round of judging taking place in Oxford, Ohio.

Having only been open to the public since April 1 of this year, the first two medals won by Boiler Brewing as a commercial brewery is quite an impressive feat. Nebraska Brewing is no stranger to this event, having medaled at the U.S. Beer Open in multiple categories in all eight years this competition has existed. Scratchtown Brewing medals for the same beer, Black Eye Imperial Porter, for the second consecutive year.

Congratulations to all three breweries!

Raise a Glass with Farnam House

As I'm sure you know by now, Farnam House recently won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup for the Bier de Garde. So, they've decided to celebrate tomorrow (June 2nd at 5pm) by cutting the price of the Bier de Garde in half until the keg blows. At 6pm, they'll have a big "Chalice Hoist" for everyone to cheer the victory.

And of course they couldn't just leave it at that. There will be a special menu available and they'll be tapping their 100th batch, a 10% ABV Belgian Golden Strong.

Nebraska Brewers Win at the World Beer Cup

At the recent World Beer Cup, two Nebraska breweries took home medals. Farnam House won a silver medal for their Bier de Garde and Ploughshare won silver for their blond bockbier, Pivo Bublina. Congratulations, you guys! Here's to more future medals!

By now I am sure you have heard that Farnam House took home a silver medal for our Biere de Garde. It was in the category for Belgian and French style Ales. There are many great beers in this category and to even be considered is an honor. To be judged as one of the three best is very humbling to say the least. We got to share this stage with Gold Medal winner Barrel Aged Woodthrush from Little Fish Brewing in Athens, OH. The Bronze went to Domaine DuPage from Two Brothers Brewing Company in Warrenville, IL. Cheers!! #Nebraskabeer #worldbeercup#worldbeercup2016 #craftbeer #Omaha #Nebraska#Wedontcoast #explorenebraska

Ploughshare Brewing Co. Wins Award at World Beer CupLincoln, Nebraska • May 9, 2016—Ploughshare Brewing Co. claimed a silver award in the 2016 World Beer Cup, a global beer competition that evaluates beers from around the world and recognizes the most outstanding brewers and their beers. Gold, silver and bronze awards in the competition’s 96 beer-style categories were presented May 6, 2016 during the World Beer Cup award ceremony at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ploughshare was awarded the silver award in the German-Style Heller Bock/Maibock beer style category for its Pivo Bublina, a
blond bockbier with notable honey, marmalade, and floral hop notes and an off-sweet finish. Maibock, literally a bockbier (strong lager) brewed for release around May 1st, is a traditional pale colored bock style and is generally hoppier and crisper than the sweeter dark bocks brewed brewed for Christmas and Easter.
“This beer exemplifies what craft brewers can do to honor classic beer styles. Our custom brewhouse allows us to craft lagers such as Pivo Bublina in the same manner as the best German and Czech brewers,” said Matt Stinchfield, Founder at Ploughshare. “We chose the best quality German malt, hops, and yeast, which along with our exceptional brewing water and patience, gave us all the ingredients to produce a world class lager.”
Pivo Bublina is Czech for “beer bubble.” Stinchfield explains the name: “After two glasses of this deceptively strong lager, you might find yourself in a place of mellow wellbeing. We call this “being in the beer bubble, hence the name.” The winning beer is on tap at the brewery’s taproom and at better draught accounts in the Lincoln area. World Beer Cup winners were selected by an international panel of 253 beer judges from 31 countries. Regarded as the “Olympics of Beer Competition,” the World Beer Cup saw an impressive field of 6,596 entries from 1,907 breweries in 55 countries. Presented by the Brewers Association, the World Beer Cup has been held every other year since 1996, to celebrate the art and science of brewing by recognizing outstanding achievement. For more additional information, visit the World Beer Cup website. Ploughshare is a 15-bbl microbrewery located at 1630 P St. in Lincoln. The brewery specializes in brewing classic styles of ales and lagers, as well as adventurous seasonal styles. Ploughshare has been selling its beers in draught format for just 18 months. Special cask beers are tapped weekly. The taproom also offers wine, gluten free beer, and non-alcoholic beverages, including fresh French pressed coffee and nostalgic sodas as well as an ever-changing beer-inspired menu.  The brewery sources only the highest quality ingredients for its beer and food.  Matt Stinchfield, Owner and Head Brew Master, opened Ploughshare Brewing Co. in July 2014. Zac and Lucky Bucket continue to pile on the awards and recognition.  Zac has recently been elected one of the top 40 business persons in the greater Omaha area under 40 by Midlands Business Journal.  Being one of the top 40 is great in itself, but Zac was also picked as the TOP Young Business Person of the Year too.  AMAZING!!  This is a great accomplishment and with the distillery about to release some more products it couldn't come at a better time.  Congrats Zac!

Great News in Kearney!!

I received word from Rich at Gottberg the other day, and confirmed it with Trevor, that Thunderhead won some medals at the International Mead Festival last week.

Gold - Braggot division - Tiny Tim

Silver - Braggot division - Golden Frau Honey Wheat

Some other great news from that competition is Kearney homebrewer Kim Harold won a Gold in the Pyment division in the homebrewer class.

So a big congrats to Thunderhead and Kim, wait to bring it home in the largest Mead competition in the world, I believe.
