Ayyam Gallery is pleased to announce Femafia, the solo exhibition of acclaimed Iranian artist Afshin Pirhashemi, who returns to Dubai with a new body of work.Pirhashemi's evident fascination with women, their struggles in hostile environments, and a resulting combative character, now expand to a wider scope of observation, tainted by the atmosphere that has been surrounding the artist for the past year.News, films, and women, among others, ignited a shifting outlook on the world that Pirhashemi has translated with his unmistakable style into photorealistic portraits defiantly laying on minimalist backgrounds.

While Pirhashemi's consummate brushwork remains a constant, his instantly recognisable monochromatisms seemingly dissolve, allowing colours to gain territory on his canvases.Following his UK show last year (Seduction, Ayyam Gallery London), in which two large-scale paintings introduced nude hues on the faces of his bold heroines, Pirhashemi’s thirst for pigments amplifies after years of colour abstinence.

Through carefully orchestrated depictions of his flamboyant characters, paired with strong, symbolic, and revealing titles, Pirhahsemi takes the viewer on a narrative road to an evolving psychic state that translates his oeuvre into one continuous series.

Ayyam Gallery Dubai (DIFC) is pleased to announce LOL, the solo show of influential Syrian artist Khaled Takreti.Highlighting Takreti's latest body of work, the exhibition travels to Dubai after a highly successful debut at Ayyam Gallery's Beirut outpost in September 2014, where a new monograph on the artist was simultaneously launched.

LOL demonstrates Takreti's recent innovations in painting through a methodical process that involves multiple stages of executing his compositions. In each work, the artist begins with appropriated or photographic imagery then creates a stencil that serves as the outline of his subjects as he renders an ‘etching’ on the sparse background of untreated canvas.

The new, bilingual monograph on the artist will be available at the DIFC installment of the exhibition.Featuring a catalogue of reproductions spanning two decades of Takreti's oeuvre, the publication also includes essays by critic, editor, and novelist Pascal Amel and Ayyam Gallery artistic director and chief writer Maymanah Farhat.

Gallery Ward is proud to present Egyptian Beliefs, the first solo exhibition in Dubai for renowned Egyptian artist Adel Tharwat.Organized by Ehab Ellaban, this exhibition highlights iconic concepts, style, and imagery of Tharwat's representations of Egyptian culture. The artist's bold and vibrant figures and sceneries are charged with noble understanding of a rich heritage and deep awe to forefathers of all civilisations that shaped modern Egyptian life we know today. The paintings tell combinations of stories through obvious and subtle associations of elements from old tales, popular myths, and melodious hymns that have survived and become uniquely encrypted in Egyptian memories.

Although the artist derives inspiration and incorporates images from history, he maintains a completely modern perspective in contexualising his visions. Thus the works reveal new meanings to symbols manifested in objects (like the key), forms (like triangles), texts, or postures and features of his figures that are reminiscent of Pharaonic monuments and murals.Tharwat's surreal settings raise new aesthetic implications, in terms of colour, composition and angles, use of space, and conceptual presumptions, bringing forth an experience that drives viewers to use their imagination in order to make sense of and complete the stories presented.
