Three Postcards of Bobcats (Kentucky Wildcats)

North American Wildlife
Colorado

Bobcat (Felis rufus).
The bobcat is secretive as well as curious.  It has keen eyesight and hearing that enable it to ambush its prey.  It is a small cat, wieghing (error - should be weighing) approximately 20 pounds and its 6-inch tail accounts for its name.  Its tufts of hair rising from its ears are used as a form of communication with other bobcats.

# 6674 Bobcat (Felis rufus).
The young bobcat will leave its range of birth at 11 months and will seek out a range of its own.  A bobcat mother has been known to abandon her young because of the scarcity of food for her and her kittens.  Its ability to adapt to habitat and diet has made it possible for it to survive from swampland to wooded mountainsides.

University of Kentucky Wildcats
(The mascot is a bobcat)

The unmatched excellence of UK basketball is a long standing tradition and a source of great pride to all Kentuckians.

This postcard is from 2009.

The University of Kentucky has three official mascots:

Blue — A live bobcat. He lives at the state-operated Salato Wildlife Education Center near the state capital of Frankfort. Unlike the school's two costumed mascots, he never attends games, because bobcats are very shy by nature and do not react well with large crowds.

The Wildcat — A costumed student, he made his debut in the 1976–77 school year.

Scratch — A later addition, he is a more child-friendly version of The Wildcat.

This spectacular butterfly from the rain forests of Central America is one of the cracker butterfiles (error - should be butterflies), so called because the males make a crackling sound with their wings when they fly.  Phil DeVries, author of "The Butterflies of Costa Rica', called this species "Starry Night" after the famous Van Gogh painting.

The 1983 War in Grenada

On October 25, 1983 Grenada was invaded by U.S. and Caribbean forces in response to urgent requests from six Caribbean countries to restore order and stop the spread of Marxist revolution in the region.  Since reporters were excluded from the landing operations, pictures such as this came to the U.S. from November 1 to November 5, 1983.  Two airfields and the campus of an American-run medical school were the first major targets.  American units took "minimal" casualties when about 600 Cubans working at the Point Salines airport put up unexpectedly strong resistance.  This picture shows a small part of the large cache of weapons seized by U.S. Troops.  Aso seized, were 12 Soviet-built BTR-60 armored personnel carriers, two were shipped to Andrews Air Force Base for display.  Also on display were twelve 2U-23 antiaircraft guns, 291 sub machine guns, 6,330 rifles and 5.6 million rounds of ammunition, (enough to equip two Cuban battalions for 43 days of combat.)  After a three day trip to Grenada, the congressional study grpup (typo on card - should have been group) concluded the move had been justified - even Tip O'Neil reversed himself!  Returning Army Rangers declared "It's great to feel wanted!"  as America showed a new pride in the military.  November 5, 1983

Phuket, formerly known as Thalang (Tha-Laang) is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand.

Phuket, which is approximately the size of Singapore, is Thailand’s largest island. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by two bridges.

Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign ship logs of Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traders. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.

Swiss Cheese

Schweizer Emmentalerkase (Swiss Emmental Cheese: known as Swiss Cheese in the other parts of the world)

This is postmarked in 2012 with four Switzerland stamps - three showing the art of Anne Oertle and one of tennis champion: Roland Hirter

- - - - - - -

Emmentaler is a yellow, medium-hard cheese. It has a savoury, but not very sharp, taste. Three types of bacteria are used in the production of Emmentaler: Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus, and Propionibacterium freudenreichii.

In the late stage of cheese production, P. freudenreichii consumes the lactic acid excreted by the other bacteria, and releases carbon dioxide gas, which slowly forms the bubbles that make holes. Failure to remove CO2 bubbles during production, due to inconsistent pressing, results in the large holes ("eyes") characteristic of this cheese. Historically, the holes were a sign of imperfection, and until modern times, cheese makers would try to avoid them.

President Woodrow Wilson - Declaration of War (World War 1)

"The World Must be Mabe (Made) Safe for Democracy.  Its Peace Must be Planted Upon the Trusted Foundation of Political Liberty."  (Woodrow Wilson.)

This postcard is unused.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Thomas Woodrow Wilson (December 28, 1856 – February 3, 1924) was the 28th President of the United States, from 1913 to 1921.

Three of the points he made while asking the Congress for a declaration of war (World War 1) (2 April 1917):

- Armed neutrality, it now appears, is impracticable.
- The world must be made safe for democracy. Its peace must be planted upon the tested foundations of political liberty.
- It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war, into the most terrible and disastrous of all wars, civilization itself seeming to be in the balance. But the right is more precious than peace, and we shall fight for the things which we have always carried nearest our hearts — for democracy, for the right of those who submit to authority to have a voice in their own governments, for the rights and liberties of small nations, for a universal dominion of right by such a concert of free peoples as shall bring peace and safety to all nations and make the world itself at last free. To such a task we can dedicate our lives and our fortunes, everything that we are and everything that we have, with the pride of those who know that the day has come when America is privileged to spend her blood and her might for the principles that gave her birth and happiness and the peace which she has treasured. God helping her, she can do no other.
