In his first speech as Grand Duke, he highlighted the fundamental values that characterise social harmony, emphasising that solidarity, justice, tolerance, mutual respect and humanity form the backbone of a civilised society. The promotion of an inclusive society remains one of HRH’s priorities to this day. Shortly after his inauguration, TRH the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess made official visits to France (9-10 October 2000) and Germany (11-12 October 2000) to help maintain the close relations Luxembourg enjoys with these two neighbouring countries. Between April 2001 and June 2002, they travelled through all twelve cantons of Luxembourg in order to get to know the different regions of the country better and, above all, to strengthen their connection with the people of Luxembourg.
