You can bid for an outstanding item: first released in 1984 and created for Jane Birkin by Jean-Louis Dumas, President of Hermes at the time, the Birkin bag is still to this day one of the most iconic fashion items, and practically impossible to get.
In order to help the victims of the recent disasters in Japan, Jane Birkin has very kind-heartedly accepted to donate her own Birkin bag, given to her by Jean-Louis Dumas himself. The bag is signed by Jane at the bottom and on the inside pocket and has been customised by her (as seen on the pictures).

Jane Birkin: ‘There’s no fun in a bag if it’s not kicked around’
The Telegraph
Jane Birkin talks of her nonchalant relationship with the luxury Hermès handbag named in her honour, ahead of eBay charity auction.
Picture the scene. Style icon of the moment, Alexa Chung, using her must-have Mulberry satchel, named in her honour, as a rain-shield while its contents dangle in a plastic carrier bag? Never going to happen. Is it even possibleto conjure an image of avid Birkin collector Victoria Beckham - whose collection of over 100 differing models is said to be worth £1.5 million - adorning hers with stickers?
But that's exactly what the charmingly down-to-earth Jane Birkin does with the bag, which costs upwards of £5,600, that Hermès created in her honour.
The British style icon and actress has told Vogue.com: "I always put on stickers and beads, and worry beads. I always hang things on my bags because I don't like them looking like everyone else's."
While we collectively scrape our jaws from the off the floor, it is worth mentioning additional nuggets bestowed from the 64-year-old's 'un-precious' school of thought: "I never have more than one bag at a time. I think one is already quite enough. Also, I hate changing bags, so I never have the thing of having ten bags."
In fact, Birkin says she has only owned four of her namesake totes since Hermès boss Jean-Louis Dumas created the bag back in 1984. The story goes that Dumas was sat next to Birkin on a flight from Paris to London, and the two got talking about how she was struggling to find the perfect weekend bag after the contents of her straw bag fell to the ground from the overhead locker.
Fittingly, for a woman who obviously doesn't consider a bag to be a piece of 'arm candy', two Birkins from her personal collection have previously been donated to charity auctions, and the same fate awaits number three: from today the black Birkin that has been toted around the world with the actress-turned-activist for the past five years will be auctioned to raise money for the Red Cross relief work in Japan.
Birkin also revealed that she is lobbying Hermès to diversify the iconic model, urging them to: "make it out of plastic or, even more fun, make it out of cardboard. Then it wouldn't be so heavy."
The only other person who might share Birkin's affection for customing is Lady Gaga. The highly-styled pop sensation was pictured last year with a white version of the infamous Birkin that had been inked with the Japanese alphabet, in what looked suspiciously like black marker pen....

But is it for you? First, a bit of background...
The Birkin has evolved since it's inception as the Haut A Courrois (aka HAC), a taller version of the Birkin model that was essentially designed as a travel piece. Legend has it that in 1984, British actress Jane Birkin inspired the company to evolve the HAC into the shorter two-handled shopping bag - and so the Birkin was born.
If you're interested in a Birkin, you should understand all of your options :) Potential buyers should understand the sizes available, the overall design - and of course, the choice of skins and prices before taking the plunge.
Size:
The Birkin comes in several sizes (25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 42cms) and the HAC comes in two sizes, 28 and 32cm.
The 25, 30 and both HAC sizes are designed to be carried in your hands. Unless you are super-skinny, don't expect to carry the 25 or 30cm anywhere besides your hand!
The 35 and 40cm Birkin bags are meant to be carried at the crook of one's elbow or in one's hand. Again - unless you have extraordinarily slender arms, don't expect to carry either of these bags on your shoulder.
The 45cm is basically designed for travel and is also meant to be carried in your hands.
The only true shoulder bag in the Birkin line is the 42cm JPG Birkin. The 42cm bag is the exception to the "crook of elbow" or "hands" design - and was introduced in 2004 by Jean Paul Gaultier for Hermes. The "JPG" version is shorter than it's Birkin and HAC counterparts, but with longer handles which allows for it's carriage on one's shoulder.
Design:
Each Birkin has a flap which extends from the back of the bag and is meant to fasten it closed on the front. As such, many women will often allow the flap to fold into the bag - and just carry it "open". It's much easier than pulling the flap over the top of the bag and then toggling the clasp to close the bag!
All Birkins have interior pockets - usually one large zippered compartment and another open flap compartment.
The JPG Birkin, again, is the exception to this rule and contains NO inner pockets (an issue for some people). It also has oversized hardware (the lock, keys, and clochette are much larger than the Birkin and HAC bags).
Hermes leathers are some of the best in the world, and as a result, some of them can be EXTRAORDINARILY heavy to carry. For example, the JPG in Clemmence is one sturdy - and heavy - bag. Imagine what it's like with when you fill it's 42cm with your personal items! Know this and be ready to deal with it before you buy.
So is the Birkin worth the money? And how much do they typically run?
Well as you’ll see from eBay, Birkin’s are probably the most popular design, and therefore command some of the highest prices. Depending upon the size and skin, prices typically range from anywhere between $6000 and $40,000USD.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that Birkin holds its value – which is always good if you decide to resell your bag.
So is the Birkin the right bag for you?
Well, if you don’t mind a bag that, for all intents and purposes, cannot be carried on your shoulder, then you’ll probably love the Birkin. If you like the look and don't mind a bag that is somewhat heavy, then look at the JPG Birkin. If you like a small bag - and don't mind carrying it in your hands, then check out the 25 or 30cm Birkin.

If you love to shop online for high luxury accessories such as I do, then these three easy steps will help educate you on how to buy authentic Hermes handbags and other merchandise online. Follow these three easy steps as a guide to buying Hermes online.
A few notes on Hermes birkins is that the waitlist is CLOSED, so be prudent when a buyer has 10-50 or more Hermes birkin bags, even if there feedback is perfect. Also know that fake bags can be made to ressemble authentic ones. Todays technology and easy access to all things globally speaking, makes it easier for those in the business of making fraudulent merchandise to duplicate almost to the "T" authentic merchandise.
So, with that said, here are the three steps that I hope will assist you with your future online purchases of authnetic Hermes birkin bags:
1. PHOTOS: PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE FINER DETAILS OF THE PHOTOS USED - NOTICE THE ZIPPER, THE ACCENT OVER THE E ON THE HARDWARE AND LEATHER IN THE WORD HERMES. STUDY DETAILED PHOTOS FROM SUPER POWERSELLERS WHO HAVE SOLD LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF THESE BAGS FOR YEARS. PAY ATTENTION TO ANY VARIATIONS ON SMALLER SELLERS WHO ARE ALSO SELLING THE BAGS.
2. LEATHER: WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND THAT HERMES USES THE FINEST LEATHERS AND SKINS AVAILABLE, AND OF THAT, ONLY 2% OF THE SKINS EVER PASS THE DETAILED INSPECTION OF EXCELLENCE IN QUALITY, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE LEATHER. IF IT LOOKS CHEAP, IT PROBABLY WILL BE A FRAUDULENTLY MADE HANDBAG.
3. PRICE: EVERYONE WANTS A GOOD DEAL WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING LUXURY, OVERLY PRICED AUTHENTIC MERCHANDISE. UNFORTUANTELY, SINCE THE HERMES BIRKIN WAITLIST IS CLOSED, THIS IS SIMPLY NOT POSSIBLE. IF THE PRICE IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT ALWAYS PROBABLY IS.
Older birkins that have been well used can range from $3,999-5,999 depending on the wear and tear to the leather, fabric, hardware and stitching. Newer birkins will most likely be close to the retail value or double. For instance, $6,999-12,999 is reasonable depending on how much profit the buyer is trying to make from the deal. This may help, but unfortunately, there are more bags being resold and resold that I believe the market is crowded with resellers of high end luxury that you may not be able to find a birkin just bought from the boutique. Be patient and keep looking. Thank.
