Entertainment Overnight -- MTM

MTM

She sang, she danced, she did comedy, she did serious drama and acting. She did it all and wonderfully, beautifully.

Thank you for all of it.

You'll be missed. Very missed.

Rest in peace and godspeed to you.

The irony of "Captain America" coming out now

Chris Evans in Captain America costume (from fan-made poster)
I can barely get over the irony of the movie "Captain America" coming out right now.

I confirmed, in researching, that this comic was begun in the 1940's, during the Great Depression.

That it would come back out now, in our "Second Great Depression" or the "Mancession" or whatever you want to call it, since it's the worst economic times since then, over the last 80 years, is just too great.  A subtle comparison it's not, but still, there it is.

And sure, we have far better technology now and it's been wholly refreshed and it's great for, what?  15-year-old boys or some such but, come on, the timing of this is just too rich to pass on.

The thing that gets me most about it is the whole "bringing back the America we once knew" aspect of it.  Clearly, we'd like to pretend we live in a bygone era but we can't go back to when it was all white people and no global warming or pollution or Mexicans coming into the country or Japanese earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown, etc., etc.

Besides blowing great wads of money, I think our civilization--the US--will also, one day, be known for not learning (e.g., Vietnam, housing booms and busts, Afghanistan, etc.), ignorant, obnoxious bravado (Geo. W. Bush, the Iraq War, etc.) and sticking our collective heads in sand, at minimum.

Pass the popcorn.

Angelina Jolie as Cleopatra?

Heck yeah.  I say bring it on.

And for once, finally, she won't be playing a black-clad, mysterious temptress/provocateur that beats the asses of all the men who come at her.  In short, it will be a new, fresh role for her.

Maybe, just maybe, if we're lucky, we can see if she can act or if she's just another John Wayne type (who can only play who she is already).

Angelina, give us a break

Okay, Angelina Jolie proved she was cool a long time ago. She proved she was smart. She proved she could make a lot of money--AND get a hot, intelligent guy to marry her so they could raise their adopted babies. Great. All cool. But now, a request of Angelina. Angelina, honey, COULD YOU PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD, GET INTO A DIFFERENT ROLE AND DO SOME ACTING? This new movie of yours, "Salt", is just so much more of what you've already done for like the--what?--100th time? (It's worth the exaggeration). Sure, John Wayne only played, basically, one role in his entire life but that was then, Angelina, and that was the Duke. You've made the money, honey. Now, could you/would you select a role that isn't more of the same old "bad ass, beautiful woman whoops men's asses" and show us what that would look like? PLEASE?
