I have a husband and father-in-law who are experienced and knowledgeable about baby chicks and chickens. Which is good. Because I don't think I'd have the nerve if there wasn't someone around here who knew what they were doing! But because I am enjoying it so much I have also gotten every book I can on the subject from the library. There is one called Chick Days by Jenna Woginrich. I really loved that book. If you are thinking of getting chickens and want to read a cute fun little book about it, pick this one up. Tomorrow I am going to get her other book, Made From Scratch. She is a little city girl with an office job turned farmer/homesteader. I love her writing style and personality. She also has a blog at http://coldantlerfarm.blogspot.com which she updates with witty, quirky, lovely posts daily and sometimes more often than that. She lives in upstate New York and I so wish I lived close to her! She often has workshops at her farm covering everything from raising chickens and keeping bees to spinning your own yarn from wool from sheep you raised. From homebrewing and archery to teaching yourself to play the fiddle. This girl is pretty amazing. I wish she were my friend. I feel like we would be good friends.
Anyway, I will make do with reading her books and blog. Taking pictures of my cute little chickens, and dreaming of being a real, live farmer.
I'm not going to post videos here and now, but go to http://www.youtube.com/user/MissaDeller?feature=mhee to see the chicky videos I've uploaded (I'll be putting more up soon)!
Here's the first set of week old chicks:
(guess what...)
And a little older now:Suki guarding her flock. They will grow up to be bigger than she is.
movin' on up
...hello, Clarice.
