The mother of an accidental shooting victim wants authorities to file additional charges connected to her son's death.
A juvenile court judge sentenced Levi Reed to one year of probation Friday for the July, 2012 shooting death of his friend, Noah McGuire. Reed, 15, pleaded guilty to reckless homicide last month, and stated that he did not know a gun he had found in a bedroom in his grandparent’s home was loaded before he shot McGuire, 14, in the chest.
McGuire was spending the night at the home when he was killed. McGuire's mother, Judi Sandoval, does not believe Reed should have been charged in her son's death. Instead, she wants the gun's adult owner to be held responsible.
"He's a good boy. He's a good boy and I hate to see him mixed up in the criminal justice system," Sandoval said of Reed. "I'm angry an adult has never been charged. Columbus police have failed to do that."
No additional arrests will be made in connection with case, according to prosecutors.

ReplyDeleteThat is a very good question. While the boys were wrong to go rummaging in grandparents' bedroom, the adults in the home incur a responsibility to make the home safe for visiting children. It being a sleepover, it cant have been a surprise. So before kid gets there, secure the firearms.
On the other side of the coin, this was another "didn't know it was loaded" accidents. He took the magazine out of the pistol, but didn't clear the chamber. Something that mandatory firearm safety training in school might have prevented. My guess is that he had been taught proper use of condoms in school, but gun safety is verboten.
More "Someone Must Be Held Responsible" BS. You're telling me that a 15-year-old had no idea that guns are dangerous and not to be toyed with? Really?!

The gun's adult owner should be held responsible. Why would you not want that, Moonshine? Don't you believe in individual accountability? Or do you want to enjoy the same tolerance when you allow one of your guns to be misused by a kid?
DeleteMikeb, do you ever get tired of that line? It's so cute how you imply that anyone who supports a careful legal system that follows rules must do so only because he's worried about needing such protection at some point.
