Melville Intermediate - AIMS Basketball Review

On Sunday 28th August Mackenzie, Marcia, Kennedy and I went to Tauranga to represent our school at the AIMS opening ceremony.  The opening ceremony was at a new stadium that has just opened in Tauranga.  (AIMS stands for Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools - Mr Webb).  We saw a lot of our friends and a lot of different schools from around the country.   The opening ceremony was one of the highlights of the tournament.

On Monday we were waiting for the rest of our team to come.  As we got there we waited, and waited and waited.  We soaked up the atmospherem and took a look around.  Still we were waiting and Mr Webb was getting distressed and kept reminding us that the others were going to be here, but every time that he said it, it made me more and more nervous.  Finally they came and we were ready.  Our first game was against Te Kura Kokiri.  We didn't know a thing about this team.  We started to warm up and I kept getting nervous.  When we first saw them they looked really small but they were good.  The ball went in the air and we won the tip and after the first touch of the ball we were on a roll.  We won this game 31-22.  Our next game was against Kaitoa Middle School and we had played them last year.  The beat us last year for the third and fourth play off but this time we won 46-36.  Early in the morning on Tuesday we were playing a team that was also unbeaten this far in the tournament and unfortunatly we lost 27-35 to Murrays Bay.  After coming off that unlucky loss we still had to play Hastings Intermediate.  They had lost all their games and we were hoping that that wouldn't stop.  We redeemed ourselves and won 39-25.  The next game was against a school from Christchurch called Chisnallwood Intermediate.  We won 71-5 and everyone got time on court.  We came second in our pool and we played Tauranga Intermediate in the quarter finals.  It was a good game and we won 43-31.  We had worked so hard for the past six games, it paid off and we made the semi-finals.  A brand new day came upon us and we played early against Sacred Heart College who hadn't been beaten yet.  Unfortunatley we couldn't break that and we lost 31-41.  As everyone thought it was over, but no we had to play for third and fourth and we met Kaitao Middle School yet again.   It was a really good game and we won 44-30.

After a hard working week we placed 3rd in New Zealand with Murrays Bay coming first and Sacred Heart College coming second.  It was a really good week and I'm sure everyone enjoyed it.  I would like to thank Andrea Randall, Joanne Wilson, Matt O'Brien and most importantly our supporters who came out everyday to watch us play (espically the Katoa family and Haweara whanau).

Melville Intermediate - NZAIMS Tournament 2011: Starts Sunday!

Tomorrow is the last day at Melville Intermediate School, for a week.  Sunday marks the opening of the 2011 AIMS Games, and Melville Intermediate are off to compete in Girls Basketball for the 3rd consecutive year.

Not only will Mr Webb be away but so will Kennedy, Marcia and Mackenzie from Room Eight.  But don't panic we'll be all back the following week returning to our regular postings.  There's over 4,000 student at Y7/8 level heading for Tauranga for this tournament, and it's going to be huge.  Those of you who will there, keep your eyes peeled for the Melville Intermediate School team in their traditional Green/Red playing uniforms and Black/Red Tracksuits.

Melville Intermediate - Vs. St Peters College

On Tuesday Melville Intermediate continues to compete at the YMCA in the local Y7/Y8 league. Melville's Girls team made the semi-finals of the A grade competition in term one, and this term started with a loss to the KOK Running Rebels. On Tuesday Melvilles second game was against St Peters College. The final score ended up being 52-24 to Melville with a strong game from Sita, Kennedy (who was player of the game), Marcia and Fauiki. A tough challenge awaits tomorrow, with three quaters of the Melville Team competing in the Waikato Inter-Intermediate Girls Rugby Competition on Tuesday during the day and then having to back up in the evening taking on St Colombus Wildcats. This footage of the St Peters game was filmed by Fauiki from Room Fourteen.

Melville Intermediate - NZAIMS 2011 Here we come!

Melville Intermediate are preparing to compete again at the NZAIMS Tournament.  This tournament is the premiere sports competition for Y7 and Y8 students in New Zealand.  Last year there were over 100 schools and 4,000 competitors, with over 800 officials in Tauranga for the week of competition.  In 2010 Melville Intermediate entered Boys Soccer, where the team came 14th, Hip Hop where our team finished 4th by 0.5 of a percent and Girls Basketball.

Our Basketball teams over the last two years have a proud record of success, last year our Girls made the semi finals before being defeated by Kura O Te Koutu from Rotorua and finishing 4th.  Our 2009 team was undefeated for the entire tournament and crowned national champions at the conclusion of the games! This years team has started preparation by playing at the YMCA on Tuesday night.   The team is in a Boys/Mixed competition and has already defeated Maeroa Intermediate and St Andrews Middle School.   Last week the Girls were defeated 35-45 by the Flyers Lakers, although they were dissapointed to lose they managed to play a forty minute game with five players and no reserves! Today Melville Intermediate played against the KBC Sting and defeated them 43-33.   Kobe managed to score 17 points, in her first game for the year, Mata scored an impressive 16 and Sita contributed well with 10.   The team has three more games in the 'A' pool against top opposition before the play offs.   This footage is from Melville Intermediates game against the Sting tonight, the AIMS Games might be six months away but its approaching fast.

Melville Intermediate - Sports Update 2011

We've had some recent activity in our School as the sports teams have begun games in the 2011 season.  Firstly we're looking at representing Melville Intermediate at the 2011 AIMS National Sporting Championships in Tauraga in August.  For that preparation we've a Girls team currently competing in a Mixed/Boys league on Tuesday nights.   Sita whose in the squad wrote this report about the Girls efforts so far.

"For the past two weeks a squad of eight girls played two fantastic games of Basketball on Tuesday nights.  On the first week we played a team of nine Boys from Maeroa Intermediate School.  Each quarter we played we won scoring the highest in four ten minute quarters.  Some of the girls in the team have never played before but they were pretty good.  After that hard-working performance we won 32-16.  As the week went past we had to play another game, a mixed team from St Andrews Middle School.  But this time there was only four of us starting off against their five.  We had no subs and only four players! As we started the game Fauiki turned up.  Yay, we had five players.  Then in the second half Kaea showed up, Yes! We had a sub!.  Goal after goal.  We scored quite a lot.  Everyone was so tired, so was I.  5... 4... 3... I only had five seconds to shoot the ball... 2... 1... the ball was in the air... 1 (still travelling)... BUZZ! Goal! The final score was 71-28, we are still undefeated."

On Wednesday 23rd of February 2011 11 students from Melville Intermediate School played Cricket against Maeroa Intermediate.  Maeroa choose to bat first and they scored 68 off 20 overs.  We got two wickets.  Our batting was great! We got 71 runs off 11 overs with only one wicket.  In the end the score was 71 for 1 off 11 and 68 for 2 off 20.  In the end it was a great game and we won.  The people who scored the runs for Melville Intermediate were Jovi and I (Luke).  You can see footage of the winning runs being score in this video.  Filmed by Kieran, presented by Gareth on Thursday 24th February.
